If YouTube Live Control Room shows a bitrate that differs from your encoder’s target, first verify what the active encoder profile is actually sending, then compare its codec, resolution and frame rate with the matching YouTube recommendation and inspect the timestamped Stream health messages. YouTube’s published guidance does not document a dedicated fix for this exact display mismatch, so avoid treating an unexplained difference as proof that either reading is wrong.
What the two bitrate readings mean
Your encoder’s bitrate setting is its target; the value or error shown by YouTube reflects what YouTube reports about the stream it receives. The official guidance does not establish that these are identical measurements, so a difference alone does not identify a fault. Start by checking the outgoing settings and YouTube’s health messages rather than changing settings at random.
Check the settings that determine YouTube’s bitrate guidance
- Inspect the active encoder output profile. In OBS or your encoder, verify the profile currently assigned to the output going to the scheduled YouTube stream—not merely a saved preset. Record the codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate and bitrate mode. YouTube’s general guidance says creators set resolution, frame rate and bitrate in the encoder.
- Check the stream key and resolution mode in Live Control Room. Confirm that the scheduled stream is using the intended stream key or ingestion profile. YouTube normally detects encoder settings automatically; manual resolution selection is available with a custom stream key. If manual resolution is enabled, compare against the resolution selected there as well as the resolution actually sent.
- Match the recommendation to the outgoing stream. Use YouTube’s current table for the codec, ingestion resolution and frame rate being sent. Do not compare a 60 fps H.264 stream to a 30 fps AV1 recommendation, for example. YouTube supports H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1 over RTMP/RTMPS, and recommends constant bitrate encoding, a two-second keyframe interval, and no more than four seconds between keyframes. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions for the full current table and details.
- Check Stream health and its timestamps. In Live Control Room, read the messages beside the health indicator and note when each appeared. YouTube says the dashboard checks the stream sent to it and displays errors with guidance; an error can remain visible until it is corrected. YouTube’s live streaming error-message guide includes bitrate guidance for non-variable resolution entrypoints: use the bitrate specified for the chosen ingestion resolution. If the selected mode cannot be sustained by your available bandwidth, lower the selected resolution.
- Test under representative conditions. Send a test with the same movement, audio and output settings planned for the event. Check the preview and health indicator before going live, and monitor them during the stream. YouTube recommends upload capacity around 20% above the total stream bitrate; for primary and backup streams, account for both streams plus that headroom. Its streaming tips state: “The total bitrate you’re streaming cannot exceed the amount of upload bandwidth available.”
Useful YouTube bitrate examples
These are YouTube’s recommended values on its current English encoder-settings page, not universal requirements or proof that another displayed value is erroneous. Confirm the full table for the exact codec, frame rate and ingestion resolution you send.
| Ingestion resolution and frame rate | H.264 recommendation | AV1 or H.265 recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
If the readings still disagree
Capture the active encoder settings, the outgoing codec and video mode, and the exact Stream health messages with their timestamps. Note whether manual resolution is enabled and whether a primary or backup stream is active. If those settings agree with the stream you intend to send but the displayed value remains inconsistent, contact your encoder vendor or YouTube support with that information. YouTube’s published troubleshooting guidance on replacing a stream key concerns certain encoder startup or credential problems; it does not identify a key reset as a fix for a bitrate display discrepancy. Likewise, the available guidance does not establish restarting the encoder or clearing the browser cache as remedies for this symptom.

Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a prerecorded YouTube stream running rather than troubleshoot a live encoder, StreamNeo is a separate option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Every slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free day.
