How to Rotate FFmpeg Stream Logs on a VPS Running a 24/7 YouTube Channel

Keep FFmpeg log growth under control on a 24/7 YouTube VPS: identify stderr’s destination, configure journald or logrotate, and verify rotation without assuming it is lossless.

To rotate FFmpeg logs without stopping a 24/7 YouTube stream, first find where FFmpeg’s stderr is going. If systemd sends it to the journal, set retention through journald; if FFmpeg appends to a regular file and cannot reopen it, use logrotate with copytruncate, accepting a small risk of lost log data during rotation. Choose limits based on observed log growth and available disk space—not a one-size-fits-all example.

First, find the log destination

FFmpeg writes logs to stderr by default. What happens next depends on how you start it: systemd may collect stderr in the journal, a shell or service definition may redirect it to a file, or FFmpeg’s report option may create a report file. The right rotation method depends on that destination.

  1. Identify how FFmpeg is launched. Check whether it runs as a systemd service, under another supervisor or container, or from an interactive shell. Inspect the service or launch command rather than assuming the logging setup.
  2. Inspect the destination. Look for stderr redirection such as 2>>/path/to/stream.log, service output settings, or FFmpeg report options. For a systemd-managed service, inspect its unit configuration and use journalctl for its records.
  3. Check the FFmpeg version and options. Run ffmpeg -version and consult the installed build’s local help or manual before relying on an option. VPS distributions can ship older builds than the current online manual.

FFmpeg’s -report option is for diagnostics, not a complete retention policy: it writes the command line and log output to a timestamped report and implies debug-level logging. The FFREPORT environment variable can set a report filename and numerical log level. Check whether either is enabled, where reports are written, and whether verbose logging is needed for a long-running stream.

Choose the rotation method that matches the destination

Logging path Best fit Retention approach Main caveat
Systemd journal FFmpeg is managed by systemd and stderr is captured there Configure journald storage limits; inspect or vacuum archived entries with journalctl Persistence and limits depend on the host’s configuration
Regular file with copytruncate FFmpeg keeps writing to a file and cannot reliably reopen it Use logrotate schedule or size triggers, a rotation count, and optional compression A small amount of data can be lost between copying and truncating
Regular file with a verified reopen action The running process has a confirmed way to reopen its log after a rename Use logrotate with a fresh file and a working post-rotation action Reopen behavior depends on the specific build and launch method

If systemd sends FFmpeg logs to journald

Use the journal as the retention layer; do not point a file-oriented logrotate rule at journal files. Check whether journal storage is persistent or volatile. Persistent journal data may be stored under /var/log/journal; volatile data may be stored under /run/log/journal and is lost at reboot. Verify the actual host settings before relying on logs surviving a restart.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Use journalctl to inspect service records. Journald has size and file-count controls and can remove older archived journal files to stay within configured limits. The commands journalctl --vacuum-size=, journalctl --vacuum-time=, and journalctl --vacuum-files= operate on archived journal files; they do not necessarily remove active files. Set retention according to the VPS disk budget and how long you need logs for diagnosis.

If FFmpeg appends to a regular file

When FFmpeg keeps a file descriptor open, a conventional rename can leave it writing to the renamed file rather than the new file at the original path. If you cannot verify a reliable reopen mechanism, logrotate’s copytruncate is designed for this situation: it copies the current file, then truncates the original in place so the process can continue appending to that pathname. The logrotate manual warns that a small amount of data may be lost in the interval between those operations.

This is an illustrative starting point, not a universal policy. Adapt it to the installed logrotate version, actual file path, service user and group, disk capacity, and observed log volume:

/var/log/ffmpeg/stream.log {
    daily
    rotate 7
    compress
    missingok
    notifempty
    copytruncate
}

Set the trigger and retention deliberately

  • daily gives logrotate a daily rotation opportunity; it does not by itself guarantee a particular amount of data or an exact retention period.
  • size can trigger rotation by size. maxsize can be paired with a time interval when a time-only schedule might allow a burst to consume too much disk. Check the installed manual for the precise behavior of the options on your host.
  • rotate 7 keeps seven rotated generations before older ones are removed. It does not mean exactly seven days of logs if rotations happen more or less often than daily.
  • compress compresses old versions. Consider how quickly the log grows and how much space compression is likely to reclaim, then check free disk space and the log’s diagnostic value.
  • missingok avoids treating an absent log as an error, and notifempty avoids rotating an empty file.

There is no universally safe size or retention count for every VPS. Observe actual growth during normal streaming, account for bursts, and decide how much disk to reserve for logs alongside video files and the operating system.

When a reopen action may be better

If the running process can reliably reopen its log, logrotate can rename the current file, create a fresh one, and run a postrotate action. That can avoid the copy-and-truncate loss window. But do not assume a generic signal or a script that exits successfully proves FFmpeg is now writing to the new path. The exact reopen mechanism is deployment-specific; confirm it for the actual FFmpeg build and launch method before using this design.

Validate rotation without risking the stream

  1. Review the installed manuals. Check the local logrotate and systemd/journald documentation because options and defaults vary by distribution and version.
  2. Confirm the path and ownership. Make sure the rule names the file FFmpeg actually writes and that the service can continue writing to it after rotation.
  3. Validate the configuration. Use the installed logrotate tools’ documented validation or debug facilities before relying on a rule. A controlled test or maintenance window is safer than assuming a configuration works.
  4. Observe a real rotation. Verify that new messages reach the intended current log afterward and that old generations are compressed or removed according to the policy.
  5. Check disk and retention behavior. Confirm free space remains adequate and that the number and size of retained generations match the operational need.

Do not claim a configuration is safe for an uninterrupted stream until the actual service and rotation behavior have been verified on the VPS.

Troubleshooting common rotation failures

  • The active log keeps growing after a rename. FFmpeg may still have the renamed file open. Use copytruncate if no reliable reopen method is available, or verify the process-specific reopen mechanism before using a rename/create pattern.
  • The expected log is empty or missing. FFmpeg may be logging to stderr captured by journald rather than to that file. Recheck the service output configuration and inspect the unit with journalctl.
  • Journal entries disappear after reboot. The host may be using volatile journal storage under /run/log/journal. Check persistence settings and the VPS distribution’s journald configuration.
  • Vacuuming does not shrink the journal as expected. Vacuum commands act on archived journal files and may not remove active files. Check the active journal and configured storage limits.
  • Disk usage still rises despite rotation. Check whether the rule runs on the expected schedule, whether a size trigger is needed, whether old generations are retained as configured, and whether FFmpeg is writing elsewhere, such as timestamped report files.
  • Some messages are missing around rotation. If using copytruncate, the documented copy/truncate interval can lose a small amount of data. If that risk is unacceptable, investigate a verified reopen method rather than assuming copytruncate is lossless.
