The hard parts are making the files work together, keeping the encoder and internet connection running, protecting the recordings’ rights, and planning for YouTube’s 12-hour archive threshold. This guide walks through those steps for a setup in India; measure your own connection and power reliability rather than assuming a particular local speed or uptime.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming. YouTube requires channel verification and no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable it ahead of your planned start. See YouTube’s live-stream eligibility guidance and encoder setup instructions.
- FFmpeg installed on a computer or host that can remain powered on and connected for the planned broadcast window.
- Lecture video files that you have the right to stream, including the rights to any music, recitations, images, or other material embedded in them.
- A reliable upload connection. Test the actual connection at the location and time you intend to stream; the right output bitrate depends on the resolution and frame rate you choose.
- A stream created in YouTube Live Control Room, with its server URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password.
FFmpeg can send a stream for a long time, but that does not mean YouTube will keep one uninterrupted live event open indefinitely. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Plan and test a way to end one broadcast and start a subsequent one before relying on a continuous channel schedule.
Check rights before making the playlist public
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match can replace the broadcast with a placeholder and trigger a warning; if the content continues, YouTube may interrupt or terminate the live stream. Copyright or Community Guidelines strikes can also end a stream. Even licensed content may be interrupted if the relevant rights holder has not added the channel to its Content ID allowlist. Get clearance for the complete recording package, not just the lecture delivery. A speaker’s permission may not cover background music, a recitation, photos, video clips, or other third-party works included in the recording. This is a practical rights-management checklist, not India-specific legal advice; the legality of a particular recording depends on its rights and circumstances.

Prepare a playlist FFmpeg can read
Inventory and inspect the files
Start by listing the videos in the exact broadcast order. The FFmpeg concat demuxer can join files without re-encoding when their relevant stream structure, codecs, and time bases match. If they differ, standardize or transcode the files, or use a concat-filter workflow that re-encodes them. Stream copy cannot apply filters. FFmpeg explains these limits in its formats documentation, FAQ, and full documentation.
For a basic inventory, run ffprobe on each file and compare its video and audio streams, codecs, dimensions, frame rate, and time base. If a file lacks audio, has a different frame rate, or uses a different codec or stream layout, do not assume it will concatenate cleanly with the rest. Standardize the set first and test the output.

Write the concat manifest
Create a plain-text file called lectures.txt in the FFmpeg working directory. Put one file entry per line, using paths relative to that directory or full paths:

file 'lecture-03.mp4'Use paths that match your operating system and quote or escape unusual filenames correctly. Keep all listed files accessible for the entire stream. The concat demuxer reads entries sequentially and adjusts timestamps; inaccurate duration information can cause artifacts or gaps. Inspect the joined result before broadcasting rather than treating a manifest as proof that a playlist is seamless.

Create the YouTube broadcast and protect the stream key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create → Go live to enter Live Control Room. Create or schedule a stream and select the intended audience and other required details in YouTube’s interface.
- Choose the encoder/streaming option and copy the server URL and stream key shown for that broadcast. YouTube may show these as separate values. Do not publish or share the key; anyone who has it may be able to send video to your stream.
- Prefer RTMPS when the endpoint offered for your stream supports it. Google’s RTMPS documentation specifies an
rtmpsendpoint with a valid YouTube path, port 443, and SSL transport. Use the endpoint and path provided for your broadcast; do not substitute a guessed server address. See Google’s RTMPS ingestion requirements. - Set the broadcast to private or unlisted for a test if that suits your workflow, then confirm the preview and stream health in Live Control Room before making a public event available.
Run a compatible playlist through FFmpeg
The following is a command pattern, not a tested end-to-end setup for every computer, FFmpeg build, file collection, or YouTube endpoint. It assumes the concat playlist is compatible for stream copy and that you have assembled the exact RTMPS server URL and key in the output address format shown by YouTube. If the server URL already ends with a slash, avoid adding a second slash. Keep credentials out of shell history and logs where possible.

-f flv "$YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL/$YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY"-rereads the input at approximately its media rate instead of sending the playlist as fast as the machine can process it.-stream_loop -1asks FFmpeg to repeat the input indefinitely. This controls FFmpeg’s input loop; it does not override YouTube’s event, archive, or stream policies.-f concat -safe 0selects the concat demuxer and permits paths that the safe-mode default might reject. Use it only with a manifest and file paths you control.-c:v copy -c:a copyavoids re-encoding compatible streams. It is not suitable when the files need conversion, filtering, or normalization.-f flvselects the output container used for this RTMP-family ingest workflow, including RTMPS.
Store the server URL and key in environment variables or another protected method appropriate to your operating system; do not paste a live key into a public script or support post. If FFmpeg reports incompatible parameters, timestamps, or stream errors, stop and standardize the inputs or build a re-encoding workflow instead of repeatedly retrying the same stream-copy command.

Choose output settings and test the real stream
YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, up to 60 fps, and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and says the interval should not exceed four seconds. For stereo audio, it recommends 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. The appropriate video bitrate depends on resolution and frame rate, so use the current resolution-and-bitrate table on YouTube’s encoder settings page rather than choosing a number by guesswork.
With stream copy, FFmpeg does not change the encoding settings inside the lecture files. If those files do not meet the settings you intend to use, or they differ from one another, use a suitable conversion workflow and test its output. YouTube transcodes a live input for viewer formats, so you do not need to create every viewer rendition yourself.

- Measure upload capacity on the actual connection, preferably while other household or office traffic is present. Leave headroom rather than setting the stream bitrate equal to the connection’s best observed speed.
- Start a private or unlisted test broadcast and play material with representative speech, silence, music, and transitions. Confirm that both picture and audio reach YouTube and that levels and synchronization are acceptable.
- Watch Live Control Room’s stream-health indicators during the test. Check again after the playlist loops, because a clean first file does not prove that later transitions are clean.
- Record the chosen resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe configuration, and keep a local copy of the tested files and manifest so a change can be diagnosed.
Plan for continuous operation in India
A 24/7 schedule needs more than a looping command: the encoder, storage, network connection, and power all need to remain available, and someone needs a way to notice failures. For a local computer, consider whether its cooling, power supply, and internet connection can sustain the intended run. A UPS may reduce interruptions from brief power loss, but it does not guarantee continuity. A remote host is another option, but its performance and availability depend on the provider and plan; no particular India upload speed, latency, power reliability, or hosting result is established here.
Because YouTube automatically archives streams under 12 hours, test the handoff from one broadcast to the next and decide who or what will restart FFmpeg and create the next event. Do not assume a single YouTube event can stay open forever. Also test what happens after a dropped connection: whether FFmpeg exits, whether your process manager restarts it, and whether the corresponding YouTube event is still accepting an encoder connection.
Troubleshooting common failures
- You cannot go live: verify the channel, check for live-stream restrictions, and allow up to 24 hours for first-time enablement. Confirm you are using the stream URL and key from the intended Live Control Room event.
- FFmpeg rejects the concat input or errors at a file boundary: compare stream structure, codecs, and time bases across the files. Correct manifest paths and quoting, then standardize or transcode incompatible files. Check for inaccurate durations if the transition has a gap or timestamp artifact.
- YouTube reports poor stream health or the broadcast buffers: reduce the chosen resolution or bitrate to a level supported by measured upload capacity, check competing network traffic, and test again while monitoring stream health.
- The video works but audio is missing or unstable: inspect whether every file has compatible audio streams and check the selected audio codec and sample rate against YouTube’s current settings guidance. A file without audio or with a different stream layout may require standardization.
- The RTMPS connection fails: use the exact secure endpoint supplied for the event, verify the URL/key assembly and credentials, and ensure the network permits the connection on port 443 with SSL. Refer to Google’s RTMPS requirements.
- The live broadcast is replaced, warned, or interrupted: check YouTube’s copyright notice and review rights for every element in the recording. If the material is licensed, ask the rights holder about Content ID allowlisting for the channel; a license alone does not ensure a live stream will avoid automated interruption.
- The stream ends during an all-day schedule: investigate the encoder process, connection, and event status, and verify that your tested restart procedure works. Schedule a broadcast turnover before the 12-hour archive threshold rather than relying on an indefinitely open event.
