Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →To keep an OBS stream live around the clock, the Mac must stay powered and awake, OBS must sustain the encoding workload, and the internet connection must provide stable upload capacity. In YouTube Studio, create or select an encoder stream and put its server URL and stream key into OBS. Test the full setup before relying on it: automatic launch can start a stream, but it does not by itself restart OBS after a crash or recover from a power or network outage.
1. Connect OBS to a YouTube encoder stream
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select an encoder stream. Follow YouTube’s current instructions for the stream’s visibility and other settings: Create a live stream with an encoder.
- Copy the stream’s server URL and stream key into OBS’s streaming configuration. Use the connection details YouTube provides for that stream; the stream key is a credential, not public information.
- If a key is compromised, reset it in YouTube Studio and replace the old key in OBS before streaming again. YouTube’s live streaming troubleshooting guidance covers key-related encoder problems.
A custom stream key can be reused. If you reset a key, any encoder still using the old one will no longer connect with it.
2. Choose settings the Mac and connection can sustain
There is no single resolution or bitrate that is safe for every Mac and internet connection. YouTube’s live encoder settings give recommended settings and H.264 bitrate guidance by resolution and frame rate. Measure your upload capacity, then choose a combination the connection can sustain over time—not just during a brief speed test.
- Bitrate: Use YouTube’s table for the selected resolution and frame rate. Leave headroom for normal network variation and other devices using the connection.
- Rate control: YouTube’s general encoder guidance calls for constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframes: Set a two-second keyframe interval as recommended by YouTube; do not exceed four seconds.
- Audio: For RTMP or RTMPS, YouTube lists AAC or MP3 audio.
- Protocol: YouTube recommends RTMPS where supported.
- Latency: Lower latency can increase playback buffering. For a continuous stream that is not interactive, lower latency may be less important than stable playback.
OBS’s system requirements warn that meeting basic compatibility requirements does not guarantee successful streaming. The actual load depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. Use the OBS Auto-Configuration Wizard or run a controlled test on the Mac and scene you intend to use; do not assume a particular Mac model or output setting will work for every 24/7 setup. See OBS system requirements.

3. Keep the Mac awake and powered
MacBook
Connect the power adapter and check the relevant Battery or Options setting for preventing automatic sleep while the display is off. Apple notes that this control is not available on every Mac configuration and that preventing sleep can increase power consumption. Menu names and availability depend on the macOS version and hardware. Apple’s current guidance is at Keep your Mac awake.
Desktop Mac
Check the Mac’s energy settings and make sure the computer is not configured to sleep during the stream. Turning off or dimming the display is different from putting the computer to sleep: OBS needs the Mac itself to remain awake to encode and send video.

4. Decide whether OBS should launch and start streaming automatically
OBS documents a --startstreaming launch parameter. On macOS, its instructions show passing launch arguments with open -a "OBS" --args. Consult the OBS launch parameters documentation and confirm behavior with the OBS version installed on your Mac; the documentation page is dated 2021-05-30.
Starting a stream when OBS launches is only one piece of automation. The launch parameter does not establish that OBS will restart after a crash, that the Mac will log in after power returns, or that a stream will resume after an encoder connection is lost. If you configure launch automation, test what happens after a normal restart and keep a way to check the stream manually.

5. Test and monitor before leaving it unattended
- Start with a controlled test and use an appropriate visibility setting while checking the stream from YouTube’s preview or watch page.
- Check picture, audio, movement, and stream health in YouTube Studio. Include representative motion and sound; a static image test may not reveal problems that appear in the real content.
- Let the test run long enough to expose unstable upload or encoding behavior. YouTube advises monitoring audio and video quality; its encoder guidance includes connection and stream-health considerations.
- Confirm that the intended watch page is accessible, then decide how someone will notice and respond if OBS stops or YouTube reports a problem.
If OBS cannot start the encoder, check that the server URL and stream key match the stream selected in YouTube Studio. If the key may have been reset or exposed, replace it in OBS with the current key.
6. Treat a 24/7 broadcast and its archive as separate goals
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived after they end. Its cited guidance does not promise an archive for streams longer than 12 hours, so do not assume a continuous 24/7 broadcast will produce one complete VOD. If retaining a recording matters, check YouTube’s current archive limits and plan recording separately. Verify available disk space and test the recording workflow on your Mac before depending on it; local recording and streaming together add workload, and performance depends on the machine and settings.

7. Troubleshoot the most common interruptions
| Symptom | Likely cause to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| OBS will not connect or start the encoder | Incorrect, outdated, or reset stream key or server URL | Compare OBS’s connection details with the selected encoder stream in YouTube Studio. If needed, reset the key and update OBS. |
| Stream health degrades or playback buffers | Upload capacity is insufficient or unstable for the chosen bitrate | Check YouTube’s stream-health information, measure sustained upload under realistic conditions, and reduce bitrate, resolution, or frame rate using YouTube’s published settings as a guide. |
| Video stutters or encoding struggles | The Mac cannot sustain the selected encoder, resolution, frame rate, or scene complexity | Use OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard or test a less demanding configuration on the actual scene. Basic system compatibility alone is not a guarantee of streaming performance. |
| Stream stops when the display goes dark or after inactivity | The Mac may have entered sleep rather than merely turning off the display | Check the Mac’s sleep settings and keep it awake while connected to power. Confirm the behavior for your macOS version and hardware. |
| OBS or the stream is still down after a crash or outage | Starting OBS automatically does not provide complete crash, power, or network recovery | Restart OBS and check YouTube Studio and the watch page. Test your restart procedure in advance; do not treat a stopped stream as guaranteed to recover on its own. |
Or let it run in the cloud
