How to Set FFmpeg Reconnect Options for a 24/7 YouTube Classroom Stream

FFmpeg’s HTTP reconnect flags and YouTube output recovery solve different failures. Configure each leg, test the full stream, and check YouTube’s encoder guidance before class.

FFmpeg’s reconnect options depend on which connection is failing. The reconnect family applies to HTTP inputs; it does not, by itself, reconnect an RTMP/RTMPS output to YouTube. For output recovery, FFmpeg documents using its FIFO muxer with recovery attempts. Configure and test each leg separately before relying on an unattended classroom stream.

Identify the failing connection first

A classroom stream may involve an HTTP source, FFmpeg processing, and an RTMP/RTMPS connection to YouTube. Retry settings for one leg do not automatically repair another. Match the option to the failure:

Failure Relevant approach
HTTP input disconnects before EOF HTTP input options such as -reconnect 1.
HTTP input is streamed or non-seekable Consider -reconnect_streamed 1.
HTTP input reaches EOF and is expected to resume Consider -reconnect_at_eof 1.
HTTP connection cannot be established Consider -reconnect_on_network_error 1.
YouTube RTMP/RTMPS output drops Use output-side recovery, such as FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer recovery options.

FFmpeg documents the HTTP options in its current HTTP protocol source: HTTP protocol option definitions. Option defaults are version-sensitive, so verify the installed build with ffmpeg -h protocol=http.

Configure retries for an HTTP input

If the source is actually HTTP and your FFmpeg build supports the options, this is a practical starting configuration. Replace the example URL and complete the command with the required mapping, encoding, and output for your setup:

ffmpeg
  -reconnect 1
  -reconnect_streamed 1
  -reconnect_delay_max 30
  -i 'https://example.invalid/live-source'
  ...

These are input options: put them before the relevant -i. The example sets a maximum reconnect delay of 30 seconds; it is a configuration starting point, not a tested performance guarantee. FFmpeg’s current HTTP source defines reconnect for disconnects before EOF, reconnect_streamed for streamed or non-seekable sources, and reconnect_delay_max as the maximum delay before giving up. The source currently lists a default maximum delay of 120 seconds, but that default may change by FFmpeg version.

Choose additional HTTP retry conditions deliberately

  • -reconnect_at_eof 1 can be appropriate when an indefinite HTTP source may reach EOF and then restart. EOF is a specific condition, not a catch-all for connection failures.
  • -reconnect_on_network_error 1 can request retries for connection-establishment failures.
  • -reconnect_on_http_error 4xx,5xx accepts a list of HTTP status codes. Use only codes for which retrying makes sense; some responses signal a permanent problem rather than a temporary outage.
  • -reconnect_max_retries and -reconnect_delay_total_max can constrain retry count and total delay. The current source lists defaults of -1 retries and 256 seconds total delay.
  • respect_retry_after currently defaults to enabled in the HTTP source, so a server’s retry instruction can affect timing.

Confirm option availability, syntax, and defaults on the deployed version using ffmpeg -h protocol=http and the FFmpeg HTTP option definitions.

Recover a failed YouTube output with the FIFO muxer

HTTP input reconnect flags do not generally repair a failed RTMP output. FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer documentation shows recovery attempts for RTMP output. Adapt the input, mappings, encoders, and ingest URL to the real classroom stream:

ffmpeg -re -i INPUT
  -c:v libx264 -c:a aac
  -f fifo -fifo_format flv
  -drop_pkts_on_overflow 1
  -attempt_recovery 1 -recovery_wait_time 1
  -map 0:v -map 0:a
  'rtmps://YOUR_INGEST_ENDPOINT/YOUR_STREAM_KEY'

The FIFO settings request recovery attempts and set a one-second wait between attempts; they do not guarantee uninterrupted service. Permanent errors can still prevent recovery. The example also enables packet dropping when the FIFO queue overflows. That can help the output catch up after an outage, but it may create gaps. Consider the lesson’s tolerance for missing material and available buffering before adopting that policy. See FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer documentation and RTMP recovery example.

Keep the stream key private

Treat the YouTube stream key as a secret. Do not publish it in a script repository, screenshot, shared classroom document, or unprotected log. Use an appropriate secret-handling method for the machine and environment running FFmpeg, and rotate the key in YouTube if it is exposed.

Match encoder settings to YouTube’s ingest guidance

YouTube currently recommends RTMPS and describes RTMP/RTMPS as supported ingest protocols. Its live encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), and recommends a two-second keyframe frequency with a maximum of four seconds. Check the current YouTube live encoder settings when choosing settings for your encoder.

Use the bitrate for the selected codec and mode

YouTube’s current H.264 recommendations are 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 6 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. For those same modes, its AV1/H.265 recommendations are 4 Mbps. These are YouTube platform recommendations, not a measurement of what a particular classroom connection can sustain.

Select a bitrate for the actual codec, resolution, and frame rate, then confirm that the available upload connection can sustain it. YouTube advises choosing a quality compatible with the connection and testing upload bitrate. A recommendation does not account for every shared network, Wi-Fi interruption, or competing classroom workload.

Preflight the entire classroom stream

  1. Confirm the source type. Check whether FFmpeg reads an HTTP source, a local file, or another input. HTTP reconnect options are not general-purpose retries for every input protocol.
  2. Check the installed FFmpeg build. Run ffmpeg -version and ffmpeg -h protocol=http on the actual host. Verify the options and defaults there rather than assuming another version’s behavior.
  3. Check YouTube’s ingest and key. Use the intended RTMPS ingest URL and the correct stream key. Keep the key confidential.
  4. Test the complete path. Run the real source, encoder, network, and destination together before class. Simulate or observe a brief interruption where practical, and confirm that the intended leg recovers.
  5. Inspect YouTube stream health. Monitor the live control room during the test and event; an FFmpeg retry message alone does not prove that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.
  6. Check content rights and channel eligibility. Use material you are authorized to stream and review YouTube’s current policies, including copyright and reused-content rules relevant to your channel. A technically stable stream does not establish that the content complies with platform policy.

YouTube advises testing with representative audio and motion before an event and monitoring stream health while live. Its encoder guidance is at YouTube Help.

Troubleshoot common recovery failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
The source disconnects, but FFmpeg exits instead of retrying The input is not HTTP, the relevant options are missing or unsupported, or the failure is not one those options handle. Confirm the input protocol and inspect ffmpeg -h protocol=http on the deployed build. Separate source-side errors from output-side errors in the log.
The HTTP source ends and does not restart EOF is not necessarily treated as a reconnect condition. If the HTTP source is expected to resume after EOF, evaluate -reconnect_at_eof 1; confirm the source behavior rather than retrying indefinitely on a genuinely finished source.
HTTP retries stop earlier or later than expected Retry count, total delay, maximum per-attempt delay, server instructions, or version-specific defaults affect timing. Check -reconnect_delay_max, -reconnect_max_retries, -reconnect_delay_total_max, and respect_retry_after against the installed build.
YouTube output drops even though HTTP reconnect options are enabled The failing leg is RTMP/RTMPS output, not the HTTP input. Configure output-side recovery such as the FIFO muxer example, then test the actual ingest path.
Output resumes with gaps or loses queued packets FIFO overflow and packet-drop policy trade continuity for catching up. Review -drop_pkts_on_overflow and buffering choices against lesson requirements and the expected outage duration.
YouTube reports poor stream health Bitrate, codec, resolution, frame rate, keyframe interval, or sustained upload may not fit the connection. Compare encoder configuration to YouTube’s current settings and test with representative audio and motion.
FFmpeg retries but the stream never recovers The underlying problem may be permanent: invalid key, inaccessible source, persistent network failure, or destination-side rejection. Check the specific input/output error, key and ingest URL, source availability, and YouTube stream health. Recovery flags cannot fix a permanent configuration error.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you do not want to maintain an FFmpeg host and recovery configuration, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist live on YouTube from the cloud. The setup is:

  1. Upload a recording or build a playlist.
  2. Add your YouTube stream key once.
  3. Go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded content from the cloud.

Nothing has to stay on at home. Every quality up to 4K 60fps is streamed as uploaded at one price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo, then start the free day.
