For 1080p60 gameplay, YouTube recommends a video bitrate of 17 Mbps with H.264, or 12 Mbps with H.265/HEVC or AV1. At 1440p60, use 34 Mbps for H.264 or 24 Mbps for H.265/AV1; at 2160p60, use 50 Mbps or 35 Mbps, respectively. These are YouTube’s recommended encoder settings, not guaranteed connection speeds or a special fast-motion multiplier.
Recommended YouTube Live bitrate for gaming
Use the row that matches both your stream’s resolution and frame rate, and choose the column for the codec your encoder sends to YouTube. The figures below are YouTube’s current recommendations, accessed in 2026. They refer to video bitrate, not total stream bitrate.
| Ingestion resolution and frame rate | AV1 or H.265/HEVC | H.264 |
|---|---|---|
| 720p60 | 6 Mbps recommended; 4 Mbps minimum | 8 Mbps recommended; minimum not stated here |
| 1080p60 | 12 Mbps recommended; 4 Mbps minimum | 17 Mbps recommended; 6 Mbps minimum |
| 1440p60 | 24 Mbps recommended; 6 Mbps minimum | 34 Mbps recommended; 8 Mbps minimum |
| 2160p60 | 35 Mbps recommended; 10 Mbps minimum | 50 Mbps recommended; 14 Mbps minimum |
The minimum is not the target to choose when your connection can sustain YouTube’s recommended rate. For comparison, YouTube recommends 10 Mbps for AV1/H.265 or 14 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p30, and 30 Mbps or 42 Mbps at 2160p30. Select the row for your actual output frame rate; changing from 30 fps to 60 fps changes the applicable recommendation. YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate table does not prescribe a separate gaming or fast-motion uplift.
Why fast motion does not have a separate multiplier
Rapid camera pans, particle effects, foliage, and busy fights can be harder to encode cleanly than a static scene. But the cited YouTube table is organized by ingestion codec, resolution, and frame rate—not game genre or motion complexity. There is no official “add X Mbps for gaming” rule in that guidance. Start with the applicable recommendation rather than inventing a multiplier.

When comparing setups, consider the codec your encoder supports, the resolution and frame rate you want, the upload capacity you can sustain with headroom, and the reliability you observe in a representative test. For example, at 1080p60 YouTube’s recommended H.264 rate is higher than its AV1/H.265 rate. That does not make one codec universally better: your encoder must support the chosen codec, and your connection must carry the stream steadily.
Encoder settings that matter
- Protocol: YouTube supports RTMP and RTMPS; it recommends RTMPS, the encrypted form of RTMP.
- Video codec: H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1, subject to encoder support.
- Rate control: CBR (constant bitrate).
- Keyframes: Set a two-second interval. YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
- Frame rate: YouTube’s live encoder settings support up to 60 fps. Match the bitrate table row to your output frame rate.
YouTube also lists progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, CABAC, square pixels, and Rec. 709 for SDR among advanced settings. Use these where your encoder exposes them and the format is appropriate to your stream. YouTube transcodes the incoming feed into viewer playback formats, so the codec and settings you send are not necessarily the formats every viewer receives. See YouTube’s live encoder guidance.

Check upload bandwidth and leave headroom
Your upload connection must sustain the stream’s total bitrate. YouTube recommends leaving 20% of available upload bandwidth as headroom; shared network use can reduce what is available to the encoder, and disruptions can break a stream. Check outbound upload capacity, not download speed, and avoid choosing a target that consumes the entire measured upload rate. YouTube’s streaming tips cover bandwidth and network stability.
For instance, a 17 Mbps video target does not mean an internet connection with exactly 17 Mbps upload is a safe choice: the stream’s total bitrate must fit within available upload capacity, with room left over. Actual capacity can fluctuate, especially if other devices or applications are using the connection. If reliability is poor, a wired Ethernet connection is one troubleshooting option; it does not increase the upload capacity provided by your internet service.

Test with actual gameplay before going live
- Set resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate in your encoder. Use YouTube’s recommended row for that combination, and make sure the encoder supports the codec.
- Use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, with the keyframe interval no longer than four seconds.
- Run a private or unlisted test using audio and gameplay movement similar to the planned stream. YouTube Help advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.”
- Check YouTube stream health and encoder messages while the test runs. Look for bitrate instability or other warnings, and adjust the bitrate or output settings if your connection cannot sustain them.
- Repeat with representative high-motion scenes rather than judging only from a static menu. Confirm that the connection remains stable at the chosen settings before the public stream.
Troubleshooting bitrate and stream problems
- Stream health warns about bitrate or the broadcast keeps buffering: The encoder may be sending an unstable rate, or upload capacity may be insufficient. Check outbound bandwidth, account for competing network use, and lower the bitrate or resolution until the stream is sustainable.
- Motion looks soft or breaks into blocks: Confirm that you selected the recommended bitrate for the actual codec, resolution, and frame rate. Test again with fast gameplay movement; do not assume a genre-specific bitrate increment will fix it.
- You chose a number from the minimum column: The minimum is a lower bound, not YouTube’s recommended target. If bandwidth permits, set the recommended value for the matching row.
- Your encoder does not offer AV1 or H.265: Use a supported codec such as H.264 and follow that codec’s recommendation. Do not enter a codec-specific bitrate as if it applied to another codec.
- Connection problems appear when others use the network: Shared use can reduce available upload capacity. Pause unnecessary uploads or downloads and test again; consider wired Ethernet if the connection is unreliable.
- Keyframe-related settings do not match the guidance: Set the interval to two seconds and keep it at or below four seconds.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a YouTube channel to keep playing uploaded gameplay videos as a 24/7 loop, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer can be off; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube.
Each slot has one flat price for any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, with no re-encoding or quality tiers. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. You can review the service at StreamNeo, then start your free first day.
