To run a YouTube radio stream in Docker, make your audio and visual inputs available to the container, use FFmpeg to encode and mux a real-time stream, and send it to the RTMPS ingest address and stream key shown for your broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room. Docker packages and isolates the process; it does not provide media, guarantee a stable connection, or keep a failed stream healthy by itself.

How the stream gets from your media to YouTube

The basic signal path is: source media or live audio → FFmpeg running in a Docker container → encoded audio/video over an ingest protocol → YouTube Live. You supply the media and credentials; FFmpeg reads the inputs, encodes and muxes them, and publishes the output.

For ordinary live content, YouTube recommends RTMPS. Its current Live Control Room values for the particular broadcast are authoritative: use the server URL and stream name/key displayed there rather than treating an example endpoint as permanent. YouTube’s RTMPS documentation describes the endpoint and application path requirements and uses port 443 (RTMPS ingestion guide; LiveStreams resource).

Prepare the Docker environment

Choose an FFmpeg image or build one that includes the codecs and any fonts or artwork your production needs. No single image or Compose configuration is established as the right choice for every deployment, so check that the image’s FFmpeg build supports the codecs and protocols you plan to use.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Make the source file, playlist, artwork, and other required assets accessible inside the container. Mount media read-only where practical.
  • Set a working directory and use explicit paths to inputs and outputs.
  • Supply the stream key through a secret mechanism supported by your deployment platform. Do not put a real key in a Dockerfile, image layer, public command example, repository, or shell history.
  • A container restart policy can restart a process after it exits. It cannot correct a bad key, invalid input, inadequate upload bandwidth, or a rights issue.

Docker syntax for mounts and secrets varies by deployment target. Consult the documentation for the environment you use and verify the configuration before relying on it unattended.

Choose the source and visual track

The FFmpeg input options depend on what you are broadcasting; a single recording, playlist, network stream, and live audio source are not interchangeable. For a radio-style broadcast that begins with audio only, YouTube still needs a video track in the output. A still image or looped artwork can supply that visual track, but it is a production choice, not a YouTube requirement. Check that the final output’s codecs and packaging match the selected ingest method.

Source What to plan for
One prerecorded file Confirm whether it contains audio, video, or both. For continuous playback, configure real-time pacing and looping deliberately; the correct options and their order depend on the input.
Playlist Decide how FFmpeg or the playlist mechanism advances between tracks, handles gaps, and supplies a continuous visual track. Test transitions and end-of-list behavior.
Network stream Use input options appropriate to that stream and check what happens when its connection drops or the source ends.
Live audio Plan for the capture or network input, a suitable video track, and recovery behavior if the audio source disconnects.

FFmpeg’s command line follows an input-and-output model, but each input type can need different options, mappings, and timing behavior. Use the official FFmpeg documentation and protocol documentation to verify the options for your installed build.

Set encoder options for YouTube Live

YouTube Help’s encoder guidance, checked October 3, 2026, lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest; H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; and constant-bitrate encoding. It supports up to 60 fps, recommends keyframes every two seconds, and says not to exceed four seconds between them. For stereo audio, it recommends 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. These are YouTube’s encoder recommendations, not a guarantee of picture or sound quality. See the current YouTube encoder settings and bitrate table.

  • Select a video codec, resolution, and frame rate that suit the production and your available upstream bandwidth.
  • Choose the bitrate from YouTube’s table for the actual codec, resolution, and frame rate; do not reuse one bitrate indiscriminately across different outputs.
  • Set a keyframe interval consistent with the target frame rate and YouTube’s two-second recommendation.
  • Choose a suitable pixel format and explicitly map audio and video when the input has multiple tracks.
  • Set audio codec and parameters deliberately. For stereo, use YouTube’s recommended 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 kbps guidance as the starting point.
  • Use an output container and protocol compatible with the ingest method. RTMPS is the recommended starting point for ordinary content requiring low latency.

Do not copy a generic command and assume its input flags, loop behavior, codec availability, or bitrate will fit your files and Docker image. Validate the full command with representative media before going live.

Publish to the current RTMPS ingest details

  1. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the broadcast and retrieve its current ingest server address and stream key/name.
  2. Configure FFmpeg to publish to the RTMPS server URL and application path YouTube provides, using the stream name/key as required by that endpoint format. The exact URL structure depends on YouTube’s current values.
  3. Pass the credential securely at runtime using your platform’s secret handling. Do not substitute a real key into a saved or shared command.
  4. Start the container and inspect its logs for input, encoder, and connection errors. Confirm that YouTube receives the feed before making the broadcast public.

Keep the server address distinct from the stream name/key when the Studio UI presents them separately. YouTube documents a primary and backup RTMPS ingestion address; use the current per-stream details rather than hard-coding either address as a timeless endpoint (LiveStreams resource).

Test and operate the broadcast

  1. Start with a private or unlisted test broadcast.
  2. Use a representative segment of the real program, including its normal audio and visual movement or artwork.
  3. Check the YouTube preview for the expected image and sound, then review stream health in Live Control Room.
  4. Watch container logs for missing inputs, encoder failures, and connection errors. Confirm that the source does not end unexpectedly.
  5. Before unattended operation, decide how the process will be supervised and how someone will be alerted if it stops or loses its source.

YouTube advises testing before a stream and monitoring stream health (encoder settings and testing guidance). Restarting a container is not a substitute for correcting media, credentials, bandwidth, or rights problems.

RTMPS, HLS, and DASH: when to consider another ingest method

YouTube documents RTMP, RTMPS, HLS, and DASH ingest. RTMPS is the practical default for ordinary live content when low latency matters. HLS and DASH involve different packaging and endpoint requirements; they are not alternate URL schemes for the same FFmpeg command.

Method What matters When it may fit
RTMPS YouTube recommends it for ordinary live streaming. It uses an RTMPS endpoint and stream details supplied for the broadcast. Start here for a conventional FFmpeg-to-YouTube low-latency workflow.
HLS Requires HTTPS media playlists and muxed audio/video, with segment and file sequencing rules. YouTube notes its segment-based approach usually has higher latency than RTMP- and WebRTC-based ingestion. Use only when your encoder and workflow support YouTube’s HLS requirements. See the HLS ingestion guide.
DASH YouTube documents it as an ingestion option, but its packaging and implementation differ from the RTMPS walkthrough here. Consider it when your encoder and delivery requirements specifically call for DASH; consult YouTube’s protocol comparison.

Troubleshooting common failures

  • YouTube does not receive the stream: Check the current server address, application path, stream name/key, and outbound network access. Review FFmpeg’s connection messages and YouTube’s stream health.
  • FFmpeg exits immediately: Verify that mounted files exist at the paths used inside the container, the image includes the needed codecs, and the input options match the source type.
  • Video arrives without sound, or sound without the expected image: Check input track selection and explicit audio/video mappings. For audio-only source material, confirm the chosen visual track is included in the output.
  • The stream stutters or drops: Check upstream bandwidth and whether the chosen bitrate fits it. A restart policy cannot resolve insufficient bandwidth.
  • Playback stops at the end of a file or playlist: Review the intended loop and playlist advancement behavior for that input type; do not assume a restart policy will create seamless playback.
  • YouTube reports stream health issues: Compare codec, bitrate, frame rate, keyframe interval, and audio settings with YouTube’s current encoder guidance, then test again.
  • A broadcast is blocked or restricted: Review the rights and permissions for every audio and visual asset. A technically valid stream does not establish that you have the right to broadcast its content.

Copyright, reused content, and channel responsibility

Docker and FFmpeg do not grant music or artwork rights. Before broadcasting, ensure you have the necessary rights for the audio and visuals, including permission for live streaming where applicable. Avoid assuming that crediting an artist, owning a copy, or using a short excerpt automatically makes a broadcast permissible. YouTube’s content review and channel policies remain separate from whether the encoder successfully connects.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is an always-on YouTube stream of uploaded recordings rather than a camera or live-audio production, StreamNeo is an alternative to maintaining your own Docker host. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; it loops uploaded video from the cloud. Nothing has to stay on at home, it supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. It streams to YouTube only and does not go live from a camera. Start the free day with StreamNeo.
