On a Linux Compute Engine VM, use a process supervisor such as systemd to restart FFmpeg when it exits, and enable the service to start again after a VM reboot. These are separate safeguards: Compute Engine’s automatic restart policy addresses certain VM-level events, not an FFmpeg process that stops while the VM remains running. A restarted encoder may reconnect to YouTube, but it does not guarantee uninterrupted playback or continuation of the same live event.
Choose recovery for the failure you need to handle
Start by identifying which layer failed. A guest-process supervisor, a VM restart policy, Cloud Run’s instance policy and YouTube’s backup-encoder setup address different failure modes.
| Option | Failure it addresses | Recovery behavior | Main caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| systemd on a Compute Engine VM | FFmpeg exits while the guest OS and VM continue running | Can relaunch the service according to its restart policy | You must configure the service, credentials, logs and boot behavior. |
| Compute Engine automatic restart | Eligible VM termination caused by Compute Engine host or system events | Can restart the VM under its scheduling policy | It does not supervise an FFmpeg process that exits while the VM stays up; manual guest shutdown is excluded. |
| Cloud Run instance restart policy | A container instance process exits under a supported instance lifecycle | Can restart on failure or always, with up to three sequential attempts when restarts are enabled | Retries are finite. Google’s surfaced FFmpeg tutorial covers offline transcoding jobs, not a continuous YouTube live stream. |
| YouTube backup encoder | The primary encoder or its network fails while a backup encoder is available | YouTube advises testing whether the player rolls over to the backup | Requires a separately configured backup encoder; it is not a restart of the same FFmpeg process. |
For FFmpeg running persistently on a Linux Compute Engine VM, a systemd service is the direct way to recover from an encoder-process exit. Add Compute Engine’s VM-level behavior only if you also need recovery from eligible VM events. Google’s documentation distinguishes VM lifecycle behavior from supervising a process inside the guest (Compute Engine scheduling options).
Run FFmpeg as a systemd service on Compute Engine
The following is implementation guidance, not a tested unit for every operating system or FFmpeg input. Adapt the executable path, user, input, output flags and credential handling to your deployment. Keep FFmpeg in the foreground so systemd can detect when it exits; do not background it inside a shell wrapper.

Create a service unit
-
Install FFmpeg on the Linux VM and confirm its executable path. Decide which dedicated operating-system user should run the stream, and ensure that user can read the input and required configuration.
-
Create a unit such as
/etc/systemd/system/youtube-ffmpeg.service. A minimal pattern is:[Unit] Description=FFmpeg YouTube live stream After=network-online.target Wants=network-online.target [Service] Type=simple User=stream EnvironmentFile=/etc/youtube-ffmpeg.env ExecStart=/usr/bin/ffmpeg -i INPUT -c:v copy -c:a copy -f flv "${YOUTUBE_RTMP_URL}/${YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY}" Restart=on-failure RestartSec=5 [Install] WantedBy=multi-user.targetReplace
INPUTand the executable path, and use encoding options appropriate to the input and available resources. The example’s stream URL/key arrangement and copy settings are not universal FFmpeg syntax or a recommendation for every source. Validate the actual command and output format before relying on it. -
Put the ingest URL and stream key in the environment file, not in source control. Restrict the file so only root and the service’s intended access path can read it; a managed secret-delivery mechanism is another option. Treat the key like a password: YouTube says it tells the encoder where to send the feed and lets YouTube accept it. If compromised, reset it in Live Control Room (YouTube: Set up your encoder for live streaming).

Restart=on-failure asks systemd to relaunch the service when it exits unsuccessfully; RestartSec=5 inserts a delay to reduce rapid restart loops. Tune the delay and restart policy to your operations. Repeated restarts may indicate a persistent input, permissions, network or configuration problem rather than a transient crash.
Keep VM-level recovery separate
Compute Engine automatic restart can help with eligible VM termination events under the instance scheduling policy. It does not restart a child process merely because FFmpeg exited while the VM is healthy. A systemd unit enabled at boot covers the separate case of FFmpeg needing to start after the guest boots. See Google’s documentation for the current conditions and exclusions (Compute Engine scheduling options).
Configure and validate YouTube ingest
-
In YouTube Live Control Room, obtain the stream URL and stream key for the stream you intend to use. Configure FFmpeg with the matching ingest destination and key; do not expose the key in scripts, logs or public repositories.

Prefer RTMPS where your encoder and configuration support it. YouTube states: “We recommend streaming to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.” Check the current ingest and encoder guidance for the destination and settings applicable to your stream (YouTube: Encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions; YouTube: Set up your encoder for live streaming).
-
Match the encoder output to the selected stream settings and the network capacity available to the VM. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and motion before an event and monitoring stream health during it. There is no single FFmpeg command or output configuration that fits every file, camera, network feed or generated source.

In Live Control Room, confirm that YouTube receives a preview and review its stream-health messages. A running or restarted systemd service only confirms the process state; it does not prove that valid video is reaching viewers.
Test automatic recovery before relying on it
-
Confirm that the service is enabled, then test a VM reboot in a safe window. After the VM returns, check
systemctl statusand the service journal to verify that FFmpeg started.Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy. -
Separately stop the FFmpeg process in a controlled test and confirm that systemd starts it again after the configured delay. Review the journal for the original exit reason and the subsequent start.
-
Watch the Live Control Room preview and health status during the test. A process restart may re-establish ingest, but official YouTube guidance does not guarantee uninterrupted continuity or that every reconnection resumes the same live event.
-
If you have configured a YouTube backup encoder, test its failover separately by following YouTube’s advice to stop the primary encoder or disconnect its network and observe whether the player rolls over. That tests encoder failover, not systemd recovery (YouTube: Tips for live streaming).

Cloud Run: bounded retries, not an assumed 24/7 replacement
Cloud Run instance restart policy values include ON_FAILURE (the default), ALWAYS and NEVER. When restarts are enabled, Google documents up to three sequential attempts before the instance becomes failed. That may help with a container-process failure, but it is not unlimited self-healing (Cloud Run restart policies).

Google’s FFmpeg Cloud Run tutorial describes an offline transcoding job, not evidence that a continuous YouTube live-stream workload is a supported drop-in deployment (Google Cloud: Video encoding with FFmpeg). For a continuous live stream, confirm that the chosen service’s lifecycle and execution model fit the workload before building around its restart behavior.
Troubleshoot by checking each layer
-
systemd reports repeated failures: Inspect
journalctl -u youtube-ffmpeg.servicefor the exit status, missing input, permission errors and invalid FFmpeg options. Fix the underlying cause; repeated retries cannot repair a persistent fault. -
The service is active but YouTube has no preview: Check the stream URL and key, input availability, output configuration and YouTube’s stream-health messages. Confirm that the configured destination matches the selected stream in Live Control Room.
-
FFmpeg does not start after a VM reboot: Check that the unit is enabled, that it has no syntax or dependency error, and that the service user can access its input and environment file. Review the guest journal.

-
The VM itself stopped or restarted: Check the instance state and lifecycle events rather than treating this as an FFmpeg-only failure. Google recommends instance logs and Cloud Monitoring dashboards to diagnose VM shutdown and reboot events (Google Cloud: Viewing logs).
-
The encoder returns but viewers still experience a break: The reconnect can interrupt playback, and it is not proof that YouTube resumed the same event. Verify the stream in Live Control Room and determine whether you need a separately configured backup encoder.
-
The stream key may have leaked: Reset it in Live Control Room, then update the secret used by the service and restart it. Avoid copying the new key into broadly readable logs or source code.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep an uploaded video or playlist live on YouTube around the clock, StreamNeo is a managed alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it also attempts automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. It is for uploaded videos, not a live camera feed.
The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo plans for available billing periods and details. Start a free StreamNeo day.
