How the relay works
Your encoder sends video and audio to Wowza on the VPS. Wowza then forwards that feed to YouTube Live. The VPS hosts Wowza; it is not the encoder unless you also run an encoding process there. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted extension of RTMP, for live ingest. Wowza’s Generic RTMP Stream Target guide describes the destination configuration, while YouTube’s encoder settings guidance covers the downstream stream.
Choose a VPS that fits the stream
Wowza lists Red Hat, Ubuntu, and SUSE Linux, on x86_64 or ARM64 (aarch64); 32-bit ARM is unsupported. Its current release supports Java 17 or 21. Check the current compatibility information before provisioning, especially if your VPS image or architecture is unusual. Wowza’s specifications list these supported platforms and formats.
Wowza’s 2026 hardware recommendations are vendor guidance, not a guarantee for a particular workload. A minimum production recommendation is a single quad-core CPU at 3.00 GHz or better, 4 GB RAM, SATA HDD, and 1 Gbps network. Its high-load recommendation is 6 cores at 3.00 GHz or better, 16–32 GB RAM, SATA SSD, and 10 Gbps Ethernet. Actual needs depend on stream count, incoming and outgoing bitrates, and whether Wowza transcodes or creates multiple renditions. The published recommendations do not establish a universal VPS plan or viewer-count formula.

YouTube’s bitrate is outbound from the VPS to YouTube. Allow capacity beyond the chosen stream bitrate: YouTube recommends 20% headroom beyond the combined primary and backup bitrate. Confirm the provider’s bandwidth limits and firewall rules, and open only the ports required for streaming and administration. Wowza lists TCP 1935 for RTMP and TCP 443 for TLS streaming, including RTMPS. Restrict administration access rather than exposing it broadly to the public internet.
Install and start Wowza on Linux
- Provision a supported VPS. Check the OS, CPU, memory, architecture, network capacity, and provider policies against the requirements above. Choose x86_64 or ARM64 only if your selected Wowza installer supports it.
- Download the matching installer from Wowza. Wowza’s installation guide references the 4.12.0 Linux installers and notes Linux ARM64 support was added in 4.9.5. Use the installer and version appropriate to your license and deployment. The x86_64 example commands for the 4.12.0 installer are:
sudo chmod +x WowzaStreamingEngine-4.12.0-linux-x64-installer.runsudo ./WowzaStreamingEngine-4.12.0-linux-x64-installer.run
Follow the installer prompts, provide a valid license key, and set administrator credentials. For ARM64, use the ARM64 installer rather than the x64 file. See Wowza’s Linux installation guide. - Enable and verify the service. The installer defaults to automatic service startup and can install Wowza as a system service, so it can continue after logoff and start after reboot. The installation guide’s verification endpoint is
http://[wowza-ip-address]:1935/ServerVersion. Wowza Manager is available at/enginemanageron port 8088 by default. Keep the Manager interface limited to trusted administrators.
Set up the incoming encoder stream
Create or select a Wowza live application, then configure your encoder to send its feed to that application. The precise incoming-stream steps depend on the encoder protocol and application setup, so use the corresponding instructions for your Wowza release and encoder. Configure source authentication where appropriate; do not leave an ingest endpoint open if your deployment requires access control.

For RTMP input, Wowza lists H.264 video and AAC/AAC-LC audio compatibility. Confirm that the source stream appears under Wowza Incoming Streams and is Active before troubleshooting the YouTube destination. The Stream Target forwards this source; it does not replace the encoder-to-Wowza connection.
Create the YouTube destination and protect its key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the live stream.
- Copy the RTMPS server URL and stream key shown for that stream. YouTube’s URL field may initially display RTMP; use the lock control to reveal the RTMPS URL. YouTube documents checking that both the protocol and server are
rtmpswhen troubleshooting a connection, and port 443 can be specified if needed. See YouTube’s streaming troubleshooting guide. - Treat the stream key like a password. Do not put it in public documentation, screenshots, or shared logs. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room; YouTube explains stream-key management in its streaming setup guidance.
Configure a Wowza Generic RTMP Stream Target
- In Wowza Streaming Engine Manager, open the live application that receives your encoder feed and go to Stream Targets.
- Add a Generic RTMP target. Enter a descriptive target name and the source stream name, then enter the destination details supplied by YouTube in the fields available in your installed Wowza release.
- For an RTMPS destination, open the target’s Advanced settings and set SSL Encryption to True.
- Enable Stream Targets for the application and save the configuration.
Wowza’s generic-target documentation describes destination application, instance, and stream-name fields, while YouTube supplies a URL and key. Field layouts can vary by release; do not assume one universal way to concatenate the URL and key. Use the exact current YouTube RTMPS URL and key in the fields supported by your installed release, then confirm the target publishes and YouTube receives it. See Wowza’s target configuration guide.

Choose encoder settings YouTube can ingest
YouTube’s live encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, with CBR and a recommended keyframe interval of 2 seconds (do not exceed 4 seconds). For a straightforward relay where Wowza receives RTMP, H.264 video with AAC audio is a broadly supported choice, and Wowza lists those formats for RTMP input. YouTube specifies AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS; its advanced guidance lists 128 Kbps stereo audio at 44.1 kHz. Use settings supported by both your encoder and the ingest path.

These are YouTube recommendations, not mandatory values for every VPS or network. Higher resolution or frame rate requires more sustained bandwidth and can increase processing demand. Select a bitrate your encoder, VPS path, and outbound capacity can sustain; leave network headroom rather than sizing exactly to the video bitrate. - Start the encoder and verify its source stream is Active in Wowza Incoming Streams.
- Check the Stream Targets status for the YouTube target and confirm it is publishing.
- Wait for the YouTube preview, then review stream health in Live Control Room.
- Test with representative motion and audio. A static test image or silent feed will not reveal every problem likely to appear during the event.
- Confirm the VPS has adequate outbound capacity and that the relay remains stable for a realistic test period before using it for a scheduled broadcast.
Troubleshoot common failures

Cost and operating considerations
A VPS relay requires a VPS and a valid Wowza license; the appropriate server cost depends on the provider, region, bandwidth terms, workload, and stream configuration. The cited Wowza specifications do not establish one universally suitable VPS plan, and no provider-specific price is established here. Budget for sustained outbound data as well as CPU and memory, particularly if Wowza transcodes or handles multiple outputs. Protecting the Manager interface and stream key is also part of operating the relay safely.
