There is no universally correct Azure VM size for a 24/7 YouTube stream. If the VM only sends already-encoded video, start by testing a small general-purpose CPU VM. If it must encode or render video in real time, choose a size only after measuring the intended encoder at your output settings. A GPU is not automatically necessary: use one only when the encoder, operating system, drivers, region, and quota support the workload.
First decide what the VM has to do
Stream duration alone does not determine VM size. A relay sending a finished feed does much less processing than a machine encoding a camera, game capture, or other live source. Set the resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate first; then test the actual workload. Microsoft notes that VM size affects processing power, memory, storage capacity, and network bandwidth (Azure VM sizes overview).
Relaying pre-encoded video
For a simple loop or low-complexity feed, test a small general-purpose CPU VM first. This is a starting hypothesis, not a Microsoft-published SKU recommendation or a benchmark. Increase resources only if monitoring shows CPU, memory, disk, or network pressure.
Encoding video in real time
Software encoding can be CPU-bound. Benchmark the encoder you intend to use with the actual source count, resolution, frame rate, codec, and output settings. Compare candidate VM sizes under that workload instead of choosing by core count alone.

When a GPU VM may fit
Consider a GPU size only if the encoder supports its acceleration and the specific guest OS and driver pairing works. Check current regional SKU availability, quota, and price as well. Microsoft’s GPU guidance emphasizes matching the VM to the workload; its Azure Virtual Desktop guidance is about remote graphics and encoding, not a performance test for a headless YouTube encoder (Azure Virtual Desktop graphics guide).
Do not treat NVv4 as a current default: Microsoft lists its retirement date as September 30, 2026, and says the family supports Windows guests only (NVv4-series documentation).
Choose YouTube output settings before sizing
YouTube’s recommendations vary by resolution, frame rate, and codec. These are the figures relevant to common 720p and 1080p configurations; consult YouTube’s encoder settings table for other combinations rather than extrapolating (YouTube live encoder settings).

YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate, and a two-second keyframe interval, with four seconds as the maximum. Test with representative audio and movement, then monitor stream health during the broadcast using YouTube’s encoder guidance linked above.
Allow network headroom and test sustained delivery
YouTube recommends upload bandwidth at least 20% above the combined bitrate of the stream, to leave room for other traffic and variation. For example, a single 1080p60 H.264 feed at the recommended 17 Mbps implies at least 20.4 Mbps of available upload bandwidth under that guidance. If you send multiple feeds, base the headroom calculation on their combined bitrate. YouTube warns that interruptions can break a broadcast (YouTube live streaming tips).
An Azure VM’s advertised maximum network rate is not a guarantee of stable continuous ingest. Test the route and sustained delivery from the intended region, and monitor it in operation. Network reliability and headroom matter alongside the nominal bitrate.

Compare candidate sizes against the real workload
If more than one size appears viable, compare the same representative stream on each candidate. Use these criteria rather than assuming a particular series or SKU is best:
- Encoding capacity: Measure CPU or supported GPU encoding performance at your target resolution, frame rate, and codec.
- Memory and disk: Allow for the encoder, operating system, source files, temporary files, and the way media is stored or read.
- Sustained network: Verify throughput and reliability with the required headroom, not just a maximum-rate specification.
- Deployment fit: Confirm regional availability, quota, guest OS, and driver compatibility—especially for GPU acceleration.
- Total cost: Include VM runtime and OS, separately priced storage, outbound data, and any GPU or software licensing.
Budget for continuous operation, not a short test
A meaningful monthly estimate needs the Azure region, operating system, VM size, running hours, disk, outbound data, and any GPU or software licensing. A 24/7 workload runs continuously while the VM is allocated; a short peak-hours estimate or a stopped-but-allocated VM is not a like-for-like comparison. Microsoft’s VM guidance says partial VM hours are charged by minutes and storage is priced separately (Azure VM sizes overview).

Use the Azure pricing calculator with the deployment’s actual inputs, then re-check regional availability and quota. Microsoft’s Linux VDI guidance also identifies software licensing, support, image maintenance, monitoring, storage, and network egress as cost considerations; those categories are useful to check, though the guidance is not a price quote for a YouTube encoder (Linux VDI guidance). An exact SKU or bill cannot be chosen without your region, OS, workload, uptime design, and egress assumptions.

Design recovery, security, and archiving
Keep the encoder recoverable
A continuously running broadcast needs process supervision and restart recovery, alerting, log retention, and a tested network route. YouTube describes the stream key as the credential and address information the encoder uses to send a feed; protect it as secret operational data (YouTube encoder setup). Limit who can access it and avoid placing it in public logs or shared scripts.
Plan around YouTube’s archive limit
YouTube’s encoder setup instructions say streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. For a 24/7 channel, decide how to handle stream events and video-on-demand expectations rather than assuming one indefinitely running stream will become one endlessly archived video (YouTube encoder setup).
Check rights and channel policies
Being able to loop a file technically does not establish that you have permission to broadcast it. Before streaming, check the rights for video, music, game footage, and other material, and make sure the channel’s format complies with YouTube’s applicable policies. An always-on stream does not itself guarantee monetization or policy approval.

A practical Azure sizing procedure
- Define the workload: Decide whether the VM relays pre-encoded content or encodes a live source; record the number and type of sources.
- Fix the output: Choose resolution, frame rate, codec, and a bitrate from YouTube’s table for that exact combination.
- Set up a candidate: Start with a small general-purpose CPU VM for a simple relay. For live software encoding, select candidates to benchmark; for GPU encoding, first verify encoder, OS, driver, region, and quota compatibility.
- Run a representative test: Use the intended audio, motion, and runtime pattern. Watch CPU or GPU use, memory, disk, network, and YouTube stream health.
- Adjust based on evidence: If any resource is consistently pressured or delivery is unstable, test a better-matched size or revise the workload. Do not extrapolate from a brief idle test.
- Validate production operations: Test process restart and stream recovery, alerts, key protection, logs, and the archive workflow before relying on the channel around the clock.
- Price the deployed configuration: Estimate continuous runtime plus OS, disk, egress, and any licensing in the Azure calculator; verify regional stock and quota before committing.
Troubleshooting a 24/7 Azure stream
| Symptom | Likely area to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Encoder reports dropped frames or YouTube stream health degrades | Network throughput, route stability, bitrate headroom | Check YouTube stream health and sustained outbound delivery; confirm bandwidth exceeds the combined bitrate with the recommended headroom. |
| Video stutters while CPU stays heavily loaded | Software encoding capacity or encoder settings | Benchmark the exact source and output settings on a candidate with more suitable CPU capacity, or validate supported hardware acceleration. |
| GPU acceleration is unavailable | Encoder support, guest OS, driver, SKU, or quota | Verify each compatibility requirement and regional availability; do not assume every GPU VM can accelerate the chosen encoder. |
| Stream stops after a process or VM interruption | Supervision and recovery design | Test automatic process restart, alerting, and the route back to YouTube instead of relying on a manually started session. |
| Long-running stream does not produce the expected archive | Stream duration and VOD expectations | Plan event and archive handling explicitly; YouTube’s automatic archive statement covers streams under 12 hours. |
