What Linode is good for in a 24/7 YouTube setup
Akamai’s Linode guidance identifies live streaming as a use case for Accelerated Linodes built with NETINT Quadra T1U video processing units and optimized for transcoding. That establishes a workload fit for certain plans; it does not establish that any instance will reliably encode, relay, or deliver a stream without interruption. The plan page reported temporary full capacity across all regions when checked on October 3, 2026, so verify current regional availability before designing around a specific plan.
The right setup starts by defining the server’s job. A relay forwarding an already encoded stream has different demands from a machine transcoding video, and both differ from infrastructure serving video directly to viewers.

For the common relay or encoder-to-YouTube arrangement, estimate the server’s outbound traffic from the outgoing stream bitrate and its duration. Do not multiply that traffic by your YouTube audience size unless the server also delivers video to those viewers.

Bandwidth and transfer costs
Akamai says inbound transfer is free. Outbound transfer to destinations outside the originating data center is metered, and included monthly transfer varies by plan family and region. Accelerated Linodes and some other plan families have no included monthly transfer allowance. Akamai’s billing guidance also says transfer overages are excluded from the monthly price cap that applies to some services. Check the live pricing, regional allowance, and overage rules for the exact plan before committing; a single monthly hosting price would not describe the cost without those details.
Estimate transfer from bitrate
For a constant bitrate, the approximate decimal data sent in 30 days is bitrate × 30 days × 24 hours × 3,600 seconds ÷ 8 bits per byte. Using that calculation, a continuous 10 Mbps stream transfers about 3.24 decimal TB in 30 days; at 17 Mbps, it is about 5.51 decimal TB. These are calculations from the stated bitrates, not provider-published usage figures, and exclude protocol overhead. Leave room for overhead and compare the estimate with the plan’s current allowance and overage pricing.

Your bitrate should reflect your chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec—not a generic 24/7-streaming number. For H.264, YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. Its recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate; use the applicable row in YouTube’s current settings guidance rather than treating either figure as universal.
Configure the path to YouTube securely
YouTube requires an encoder server URL and a stream key. Treat the key like a password: restrict access to it, avoid sharing it in public logs or screenshots, and reset it if you think it has been exposed. YouTube recommends RTMPS when the encoder supports it. YouTube Help describes it as “a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.” YouTube automatically transcodes an incoming stream into formats suited to viewers’ devices and networks.

Use YouTube’s current encoder settings for the codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval you select. Test the connection before relying on a continuous broadcast. YouTube’s network guidance recommends leaving 20% bandwidth headroom beyond the combined bitrate of primary and backup streams. Prepare the encoder, check the stream preview and health, and monitor the broadcast rather than assuming that a successful initial connection will stay healthy indefinitely.
Reliability: plan for failures, not just launch
A 24/7 stream is an operations problem as much as a hosting choice. A process can stop, a network path can fail, a region can lack capacity, or YouTube can drop an incoming stream. A reliable design needs monitoring, restart behavior, and a tested recovery route appropriate to the consequences of a failure. Do a test stream and a failure drill before relying on the setup.

Akamai’s 2025 MediaCP customer story describes a 24/7 broadcasting workflow using Linode Kubernetes Engine, regional workloads, edge relay, and Akamai Cloud CDN clusters. It illustrates a layered architecture, not independent testing of Linode and not proof that a single virtual machine provides equivalent redundancy or a particular uptime. No universal minimum instance size or measured availability result for the setup described here is established.

Linode is worth considering if you need control over a cloud server for a relay or encoder workflow, can choose and operate the required software, and have checked that the plan’s sustained resources, regional capacity, transfer allowance, and overage costs fit your stream. Transcoding makes compute or video-processing resources especially important. A relay still requires bandwidth planning and supervision. If your design serves viewers directly from your own infrastructure, model that distribution separately.

It is a less straightforward fit if you expect a virtual machine purchase alone to solve continuous-stream reliability, or if you do not want to monitor and recover the software and stream. Published plan guidance and a customer architecture example do not substitute for testing your own path and failure handling.

Will Linode guarantee that a 24/7 YouTube stream stays live?
No. A cloud host can run the components of a streaming workflow, but continuity depends on the complete architecture and its monitoring and recovery arrangements.
Does a YouTube stream’s bandwidth use depend on how many people watch?
Not for the usual arrangement where the host sends one feed to YouTube and YouTube serves playback. Audience-based egress applies if your own infrastructure also delivers the video to viewers.
