Check the incoming stream’s status in Wowza, then the target’s status and YouTube Live Control Room preview. An encoder reconnect alone does not confirm that YouTube is receiving the broadcast.
Diagnose the two connections separately
A Wowza broadcast has two links to check: the encoder sends a source stream into Wowza, and Wowza sends that stream to YouTube. The incoming stream can be active while the YouTube target is waiting or in error, so check each leg rather than treating “reconnected” as proof that playback resumed.
Wowza’s [YouTube stream-target guide] (updated August 7, 2026) and [encoder connection instructions] (updated September 17, 2026) describe the relevant status checks and configuration. Those checks help locate the failure; they do not establish a universal reconnect time or guarantee that YouTube resumes the same event.
1. Check whether the encoder is reaching Wowza
- In Wowza Streaming Engine, open the application’s Incoming Streams view. Find the expected stream and check that its status is Active. The stream detail view can also show uptime and throughput.
- If the stream is missing or inactive, compare the encoder’s application and stream names with the Wowza application and stream configuration. Check the server address and port, and confirm that the encoder is configured to use any required source username and password.
- RTMP and RTSP-based encoders require source authentication by default in Wowza; credentials are case-sensitive. The default streaming host port is TCP 1935. Confirm the configured port if your server uses a different one.
If the input remains absent or inactive, resolve the encoder-to-Wowza connection before debugging YouTube output. Wowza’s [connection instructions] cover encoder connection settings.

2. Check Wowza’s YouTube stream target
If the incoming stream is Active, inspect the YouTube stream target in Wowza. Verify that the target uses the actual incoming source stream and that its destination application corresponds to the YouTube Stream URL. Recheck the Stream URL and stream key copied from YouTube Studio; Wowza sends the target to YouTube over RTMP.
Interpret the target status
- Waiting: The target is enabled but is not yet pushing. Wowza says this can happen when the configured source is not connected or while it initializes the destination connection.
- Active: Wowza connected to YouTube and is pushing the stream. This confirms the Wowza-to-YouTube connection, but check YouTube itself to verify receipt.
- Error: Wowza could not connect. Recheck the target configuration and destination server, and ensure the configured source stream is connected.

3. Confirm receipt in YouTube Live Control Room
Open the relevant event in YouTube Live Control Room and look for its preview. Wowza uses the preview to verify that YouTube is receiving the stream. An Active incoming stream, or an encoder reporting that it reconnected, does not by itself confirm that the target is delivering video to YouTube.

Do not apply the incoming-stream reconnect setting to the YouTube target
Wowza documents a MediaCaster streamTimeout setting for monitoring and reconnecting certain offline incoming streams. Its listed protocols are native RTP, MPEG-TS, RTSP/RTP, and SHOUTcast/Icecast—not RTMP. The guide’s example uses 12000 milliseconds (12 seconds) as a configuration threshold for an incoming stream offline longer than that; it is not a recovery-time guarantee and is not documented as a fix for the outgoing YouTube RTMP target.

Only consider that setting after confirming that the incoming stream uses a supported protocol, and consult Wowza’s current [MediaCaster Stream Monitor guide] (updated July 22, 2026). Do not generalize its protocol-specific behavior to YouTube target reconnection.
