Bitrate is the amount of encoded data sent each second. A higher video bitrate can preserve more detail, but it also needs more upload bandwidth—and it does not guarantee a better-looking or more stable stream. The right setting depends on your platform, codec, resolution, frame rate, encoder, content, and connection.
What bitrate means
Video bitrate is the data rate allocated to encoded video, usually measured in kilobits per second (kbps) or megabits per second (Mbps). Audio uses data too, so your total stream rate is higher than the video rate alone. Bitrate is neither resolution nor a direct quality score: it describes how much data is sent over time.
Encoding compresses video for transmission. With other factors held comparable, giving the encoder more data can reduce visible compression and preserve detail. But a higher rate also increases the load on your upload connection. Resolution, frame rate, codec, encoder implementation, motion, and viewing conditions all affect the result; there is no single bitrate that guarantees a particular visual quality.
How bitrate affects a gaming stream
Image detail and motion
When bitrate is too low for the selected output and content, compression can become more noticeable. Fast gameplay, camera movement, foliage, particles, and other complex scenes may be harder to encode than a mostly static scene. If a stream looks pixelated during action, bitrate may be one factor, but the symptom alone does not establish the cause.

Upload bandwidth and stability
A bitrate target is useful only if your connection can sustain it. YouTube says, “The total bitrate you’re streaming cannot exceed the amount of upload bandwidth available.” Its guidance recommends leaving 20% of upload bandwidth unused as headroom. Other devices and shared network use can reduce what is available to your stream, and momentary connection disruptions can still cause trouble.
Resolution, frame rate, and encoding load
Higher resolution and frame rate raise the demands on the stream. Twitch notes that higher resolution needs a higher bitrate, while higher frame rate takes more encoding power. If your connection or computer cannot sustain the combination, lowering the bitrate, resolution, or frame rate may be a better trade-off than pushing the highest possible settings.

Published bitrate examples for YouTube Live and Twitch
The following values are platform-published examples observed on October 3, 2026, not independent test results or guarantees of image quality. Use the row for your own platform and configuration; the services’ recommendations are not interchangeable.
| Platform and source configuration | Published recommended or example video bitrate | Context |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube Live, H.264, 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps | YouTube’s live-ingest guidance; its table also lists a minimum bitrate. YouTube lists separate ranges for H.264 and AV1/H.265. |
| YouTube Live, H.264, 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps | YouTube’s live-ingest guidance. |
| Twitch, 1080p at 60 fps | 6000 kbps | Example encoder configuration in Twitch’s guide. |
| Twitch, 720p at 30 fps | 3000 kbps | Example encoder configuration in Twitch’s guide. |
These figures describe source streams sent to the platform, not necessarily the version every viewer watches. The available bitrate, codec, and frame-rate recommendations can change, so check the current platform guide when setting up a stream.

How to choose and test a bitrate
- Choose the platform and output. Decide where you are streaming, then select the codec, resolution, and frame rate you want to send.
- Check the platform’s current encoder guide. Match its recommendation to your exact codec and output configuration rather than borrowing a number from another service.
- Check sustainable upload capacity. Make sure the connection can carry the total stream bitrate, including audio, while retaining headroom. YouTube recommends reserving 20% of upload bandwidth.
- Configure the encoder. For YouTube Live, current guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS, up to 60 fps, CBR rate control, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. OBS exposes video bitrate as an output setting and says the appropriate value depends on upload speed and the streaming service.
- Test before going live. If the platform allows it, use a private or unlisted stream. Test scenes with representative movement and audio, then monitor stream health.
- Adjust to the weakest link. If the connection or encoder cannot sustain the output, reduce bitrate, resolution, or frame rate and test again.
This is a practical sequence based on the platform and OBS guidance, not a claim that one setting works for every game or network.
Why a stream may look pixelated or drop frames
Pixelation, interruptions, or dropped frames can have different causes. Check the output settings, connection, and encoding workload before assuming that bitrate alone is the problem.

| Symptom or constraint | What to check | Practical adjustment |
|---|---|---|
| Fast gameplay looks blocky | Whether the platform’s recommended rate matches your codec, resolution, and frame rate; whether the scene has rapid motion. | If the connection can sustain it, test the platform-recommended rate. Otherwise lower output resolution or frame rate and compare. |
| Stream health reports connection trouble or the stream drops | Whether other network use is consuming upload capacity and whether the stream has the recommended headroom. | Reduce total stream demand or network competition; retest on a stable connection. |
| Frames are dropped while encoding | Whether the chosen encoder and output settings exceed your computer’s encoding capacity. Twitch notes that x264 uses CPU resources and GPU encoding can use dedicated encoder hardware. | Choose an encoder your system can sustain, or lower resolution or frame rate, then test again. |
| Some viewers cannot watch smoothly | Whether the platform offers alternate playback versions for viewers with slower connections or less capable devices. | Do not assume viewers receive your exact ingest feed; check the platform’s current transcoding options. |
Twitch’s guidance captures the stability trade-off: “Remember: it’s always better to have a stable stream than to push for a higher video quality that might cause you to drop frames or test the limits of your internet connection.”
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What viewers receive: source stream versus playback
The stream you send to a platform is the ingest feed. A platform may transcode it into alternate versions with different resolutions, frame rates, or bitrates, allowing viewers to choose an option that suits their connection or device. OBS’s transcoding documentation says YouTube transcodes all streams and describes Twitch access as tiered. That OBS article is dated June 9, 2021, so check each platform’s current documentation rather than treating its description of availability as a current guarantee.
