How to Fix Packet Loss on a 4K 60fps YouTube Live Stream Over Indian Broadband

Find out whether dropped frames on a 4K 60fps YouTube Live stream point to encoder settings, Wi-Fi or a wider network route, and what evidence to give your ISP.

To troubleshoot suspected packet loss on a 4K 60fps YouTube Live stream, first record OBS’s network-dropped-frame count and YouTube’s stream-health message, then repeat the same test over direct Ethernet with other uploads paused. If the symptom persists on a wired connection, the fault may lie beyond Wi-Fi—in the computer, router, ISP access network, upstream route or YouTube ingestion. A speed test alone cannot identify which part of the route is responsible.

What “packet loss” means for your live stream

When OBS reports network-dropped frames, or YouTube warns that it is not receiving enough video, the stream is failing to deliver data steadily. Those signs justify investigating the connection and YouTube ingestion, but do not prove that packets are being lost at your router or that your ISP is at fault.

YouTube’s Live Streaming API calls one relevant health condition videoIngestionStarved. Its documentation explains: “YouTube is not receiving enough video to maintain smooth streaming. As such, viewers will experience buffering.” That describes what YouTube is observing and the likely viewer impact; it does not pinpoint where on the route the problem begins. Google’s YouTube Live Streaming API health-status documentation distinguishes this from bitrate and keyframe warnings.

Capture evidence before changing settings

A short test can miss an intermittent fault, so compare repeated observations during the problem and at a quieter time. Keep the encoder settings fixed while testing the network connection.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Write down the date and time, and whether the streaming computer is on Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
  • Record OBS’s network-dropped-frame count or percentage and how the output bitrate behaves.
  • Copy the exact warning shown in YouTube Live Control Room.
  • Note whether household devices, cloud backups, downloads or other uploads were active.
  • Repeat the observations during the affected period and at another time, rather than relying on one brief result.

This is a practical diagnostic method, not a formal YouTube or TRAI procedure. A speed test can help check upload capacity, as YouTube recommends, but a single result does not establish sustained performance to YouTube’s ingest route.

Check the 4K 60fps encoder settings

Compare your configured video bitrate with YouTube’s current guidance for 2160p at 60 fps. These are encoder bitrate recommendations, not a guarantee that your broadband connection can sustain the upload continuously.

Video codec YouTube guidance for 2160p at 60 fps
H.264 50 Mbps recommended
AV1 or H.265 35 Mbps recommended; 10 Mbps listed minimum

These figures are from YouTube Help’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance, accessed in 2026. Check the codec your encoder and YouTube setup actually support; do not assume every codec is available in every configuration.

  • Use constant bitrate (CBR), a frame rate up to 60 fps, and a keyframe interval of two seconds. YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds.
  • Use RTMP or RTMPS as YouTube recommends, and test with audio and motion similar to the planned stream.
  • At 4K, YouTube does not offer its low-latency option; 4K streams use normal latency.
  • Monitor YouTube’s stream health during the test. A bitrate recommendation is not upload headroom: the connection must deliver reliably in addition to meeting the configured encoder rate.

Test Ethernet against Wi-Fi

  1. Keep the encoder configuration unchanged. This lets you compare the network link without also changing video settings.
  2. Connect the streaming computer directly to the router with Ethernet and repeat a comparable test stream. Pause cloud backups, downloads and other large uploads during the controlled test.
  3. Compare the evidence. If network-dropped frames disappear only on Ethernet, investigate the home Wi-Fi segment: signal strength, interference, router placement and competing wireless traffic.
  4. If the problem remains wired, repeat at another time. A persistent wired failure makes Wi-Fi less likely to be the only cause, but the remaining possibilities include the computer, router, ISP access network, upstream route or YouTube ingestion.

A Cat 6 cable can be a reasonable diagnostic purchase if you cannot currently connect the computer to the router. Test before buying a new router or mesh system: a cable can help isolate Wi-Fi, but cannot repair a fault elsewhere on the route.

Use YouTube’s health warnings to choose the next check

  • High or low bitrate warning: check the video bitrate and encoder settings against YouTube’s guidance, then compare the warning with OBS’s dropped-frame data.
  • Keyframe warning: check the interval. YouTube recommends two seconds and warns that an interval longer than four seconds may cause buffering.
  • “Not receiving enough video” or videoIngestionStarved: treat it as a sign of insufficient incoming video at ingestion, not proof of which network segment is responsible.
  • OBS network-dropped frames rising: investigate the delivery path by comparing Wi-Fi and Ethernet, pausing competing uploads and repeating at the time of the issue.

YouTube recommends matching stream quality to the internet connection, testing upload speed, testing the stream realistically and monitoring stream health. For 4K, use normal latency rather than expecting a low-latency setting.

When and how to contact your ISP in India

If repeated tests still show unstable delivery on Ethernet, open a support case with the ISP. Give the provider timestamps, OBS statistics, the exact YouTube warning, your wired-versus-Wi-Fi comparison, and results from repeated tests. Ask them to investigate the access connection and route during the affected period. Avoid blaming a particular provider or city without measurements from your connection.

TRAI’s 2024 Quality of Service framework covers latency, jitter and packet-drop parameters. The Government of India’s 2 August 2024 announcement said the revised framework would enable “identification of pockets of degraded QoS performance for corrective action by service providers.” TRAI’s public wireline broadband reporting lists performance for the quarter ending June 2026. These are useful regulatory and provider-reporting contexts, not individualized end-to-end route tests that diagnose a subscriber’s YouTube stream.
