If your YouTube live stream freezes while OBS still says it is encoding, the encoder indicator alone does not show whether YouTube is receiving fresh video. Compare the OBS preview and a local recording with OBS’s connection and dropped-frame indicators and YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health. A freeze in local output points toward production; healthy local output with bad remote playback points toward delivery or ingest. That is a diagnostic starting point, not a guaranteed diagnosis.
First locate where the video freezes
- Check the OBS preview. Is the source moving normally, or is the picture itself frozen or choppy?
- Check a local recording, if available. YouTube recommends checking the stream in the encoder and looking for problems in the local archive. If the recording is also affected, concentrate first on the source, rendering, or encoding.
- Check remote playback. If the preview and recording are healthy but YouTube playback is not updating, investigate delivery, ingest, and YouTube’s stream-health messages.
- Ask who is affected. One viewer may have a local playback or network problem. Reports from viewers sharing a connection point toward that network; reports from viewers on separate networks can indicate an encoder-side problem.
This split follows YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance and OBS’s performance and connection guidance; it narrows the next checks but cannot identify every cause by itself. YouTube: Troubleshoot your live stream
Check OBS and YouTube delivery signals
OBS dropped frames and connection status
Look at OBS’s dropped-frame counter and connection status. OBS defines dropped frames as a sign that the connection to the remote ingest server is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. Dropped frames support a connection-path diagnosis, but not every visible freeze will produce them. OBS’s connection guide, published September 30, 2024, describes dropped frames or intermittent disconnections as indicating a network issue between the computer and remote ingest server. OBS: Stream Connection Troubleshooting
YouTube Live Control Room stream health
Open the live stream in YouTube Live Control Room and inspect stream health and reported errors. Google / YouTube Help recommends monitoring stream health during the event and reviewing its messages. Match those messages with what OBS and your local recording show rather than treating the OBS encoder status as proof of successful delivery. YouTube: Troubleshoot your live stream

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
If OBS preview or local recording is frozen
When the local output is affected, start with production performance rather than changing network settings blindly. OBS’s encoding-performance guidance was published June 12, 2021; the applicable menus and behavior can vary by OBS version, operating system, and encoder.
- Update OBS and check its logs or status for encoder errors.
- Check CPU load. Close only applications you know are using substantial GPU resources.
- If streaming a game, cap its frame rate or reduce graphics settings to leave resources for OBS.
- Simplify scenes, sources, and filters, then see whether local output stabilizes.
- If necessary, lower output resolution or frame rate and test again.
- On Windows only, OBS lists running OBS as administrator as a quick measure to try for GPU overload. It is not a universal remedy and does not address a network fault.
Change one relevant setting at a time and check preview or a short local recording after each change. OBS: Encoding Performance Troubleshooting

If local output is healthy but YouTube is not updating
Fit bitrate to the connection and stream format
Reduce video bitrate if OBS shows dropped frames or other evidence of an unstable connection. OBS’s connection guide suggests starting at 75% of total upload speed; treat that as a starting suggestion, not a guarantee. Upload capacity needs to be stable, and the stream must also fit YouTube’s recommendations for its codec, resolution, and frame rate.
The following are Google / YouTube Help’s recommended H.264 ingest bitrates on its encoder-settings page, accessed October 3, 2026. They are recommendations for the listed output settings, not measured upload speeds or guarantees. The same page lists different values for AV1 and H.265, so use the row for the codec you actually send and check the live table because guidance can change.

Check ingest and network path
- If the service and your OBS setup expose an ingest-server choice, test a different ingest server.
- Check whether a VPN, firewall or antivirus, bundled network software, or network drivers could be interrupting delivery.
- Try Ethernet if you are streaming over Wi-Fi and can connect directly. OBS warns that Wi-Fi may be unstable for streaming; a wired connection is a diagnostic, not a guaranteed fix. A cable can be useful when the setup permits it, but replacing hardware without evidence of a fault may not help.
- For general connectivity trouble, restart the modem and router. OBS also lists the modem/router, network cable, network card, switch, or extender as possible fault points. If the problem persists or you are unsure whether hardware needs replacing, contact your ISP.
- OBS documents network optimization and TCP pacing controls for Windows. Their availability is platform- and version-specific; leave “Bind to IP” at “Default,” as OBS advises.
If local output is healthy but outbound connectivity tests poorly, YouTube advises contacting your ISP. OBS: Stream Connection Troubleshooting · YouTube: Troubleshoot your live stream

Check stream settings before the next broadcast
Test before going live, then monitor YouTube stream health during the event. For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds. Use the current official settings page for bitrate recommendations that match your codec, resolution, and frame rate; no single bitrate suits every stream.
Confirm that OBS is sending to the intended YouTube stream key and ingest destination. Treat the key as a secret: anyone with it may be able to send video to your stream. If you suspect it has been exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS with the new key before the next broadcast. The specific YouTube interface labels can change, so follow the current Live Control Room or Studio instructions. YouTube: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions

Recovery order when the stream is already live
- Check whether the OBS preview and local recording are also frozen.
- Read OBS dropped-frame and connection indicators, then check YouTube stream health and errors.
- If local output is affected, reduce production load: simplify scenes, cap game frame rate, or lower output resolution or frame rate.
- If local output is healthy but OBS reports delivery trouble, reduce bitrate to a stable level, test an available alternate ingest server, and check the network path.
- Ask affected viewers whether they share a network; use reports across separate connections to distinguish an isolated playback issue from a wider incident.
- Once stable, verify YouTube stream health and monitor it rather than assuming an active encoder means recovery is complete.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuously looping YouTube channel rather than a live camera broadcast, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it plays uploaded videos, not camera video. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month.
