For a 4K, 30 fps YouTube Live stream, a practical FFmpeg starting point is H.264 over RTMPS, 3840×2160 output, a 42 Mbps target video bitrate, a two-second keyframe interval, and stereo AAC audio at 128 kbps. YouTube also lists AV1 and H.265 at a lower recommended 30 Mbps for 4K30, but use those only if your encoder and ingest setup support them reliably. The settings below configure the stream; they do not guarantee your computer can encode it in real time or your connection can upload it steadily.
Recommended YouTube settings for 4K30
| Setting | YouTube guidance | Practical FFmpeg choice |
|---|---|---|
| Resolution and frame rate | 4K/2160p at 30 fps | 3840×2160 at 30 fps, if the source and system can sustain it. |
| Video codec and bitrate | H.264: 11 Mbps minimum, 42 Mbps recommended. AV1 or H.265: 8 Mbps minimum, 30 Mbps recommended. | Use H.264 at 42 Mbps for the broadly compatible example below. Select the figures for the codec you actually send. |
| Protocol | RTMP or RTMPS; YouTube recommends RTMPS. | Use the RTMPS ingest URL from YouTube Live Control Room when supported by your FFmpeg build. |
| Rate control | CBR | Configure encoder-specific constant-rate behavior and verify the chosen encoder’s options. |
| Keyframes | Two seconds recommended; do not exceed four seconds. | At 30 fps, set a 60-frame GOP for a two-second interval. |
| Audio | Stereo: 128 kbps at 44.1 kHz. For 5.1, YouTube lists 384 kbps at 48 kHz; 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS requires AAC. | AAC stereo at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz. |
| SDR color | Rec. 709, 8-bit. | Use 8-bit Rec. 709 when that matches the source. |
| Latency | 4K uses normal latency; YouTube does not offer its low-latency improvement option for 4K. | Plan for normal latency rather than relying on low-latency mode. |
These are YouTube’s published ingest recommendations, not a promise that a particular encoder, computer, or internet connection will deliver a stable stream. YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance is the reference for current platform requirements; confirm it again before an important broadcast.
FFmpeg command for an SDR H.264 stream
Replace INPUT with your video file and RTMPS_INGEST_URL_WITH_STREAM_KEY with the RTMPS ingest URL and stream key copied from YouTube Live Control Room. Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your channel’s stream.
ffmpeg -re -i INPUT
-vf "scale=3840:2160:flags=lanczos,fps=30,format=yuv420p"
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -profile:v high
-b:v 42M -minrate 42M -maxrate 42M -bufsize 84M
-g 60 -keyint_min 60 -bf 2 -refs 1 -coder cabac
-color_primaries bt709 -color_trc bt709 -colorspace bt709
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2
-f flv "RTMPS_INGEST_URL_WITH_STREAM_KEY"
What the important options do
-rereads a file at its native rate instead of sending it as fast as possible. It is appropriate for this file-input example when packet timing matters. Do not add it to a capture device or other live input; FFmpeg warns that doing so can cause packet loss.-vfscales to 3840×2160, sets output to 30 fps, and formats video as 8-bit 4:2:0. This example scales every source to 4K, including smaller sources; change the filter if you need to preserve aspect ratio or avoid upscaling.-b:v,-minrate, and-maxrateare all set to 42 Mbps for a CBR-style target. Exact rate-control behavior varies by encoder, so check its documentation and verify the output.-bufsize 84Mis an example two-second rate-control buffer at 42 Mbps. It is an encoder control, not additional network bitrate.-g 60sets a maximum 60-frame GOP; at 30 fps, that is two seconds.-keyint_min 60asks for the same minimum interval. The YouTube recommendation is a two-second keyframe interval and no more than four seconds.- The color flags tag output as Rec. 709; they do not convert incompatible source color. Confirm the source is SDR/Rec. 709 or perform an appropriate conversion rather than merely relabeling it.
-preset veryfastis a workload-versus-quality choice, not a YouTube requirement. A slower preset may improve compression efficiency but can overload a machine; use it only if your system maintains real-time 4K without missed frames.
Choose the codec your setup can actually sustain
H.264 is a sensible starting choice because it is widely supported by FFmpeg builds and explicitly listed in YouTube’s settings. At 4K30, YouTube’s recommended bitrate is 42 Mbps for H.264 and 30 Mbps for either AV1 or H.265; the listed minima are 11 Mbps and 8 Mbps, respectively. A lower recommended bitrate does not automatically make AV1 or H.265 the better choice for your setup: encoder availability, real-time performance, and ingest support depend on your machine and software build.

Check available encoders with ffmpeg -encoders, then consult the local encoder’s help or documentation for its rate-control and GOP options. Hardware encoders can reduce CPU load, but confirm that the specific encoder can maintain the desired bitrate and keyframe behavior. Verify the codec recognized by YouTube Studio after a test stream.
Preflight the computer, connection, and stream
- Get the ingest details. In YouTube Live Control Room, copy the RTMPS ingest URL and stream key. Do not publish the key or leave it exposed in shared logs or screenshots.
- Check your FFmpeg build. Confirm that it includes the encoder you plan to use and supports the needed options. Encoder flags are not interchangeable across every build.
- Check sustained upload capacity. Use a speed test and leave headroom above the chosen video bitrate for audio and protocol overhead. A connection that only matches the nominal video rate has little room for variation.
- Run a representative test. Use a private, unlisted, or otherwise appropriate test stream. Include movement and audio similar to the real broadcast; static video alone may not reveal encoding or bandwidth problems.
- Watch stream health and logs. Look for dropped frames, disconnects, and bitrate instability in YouTube’s stream health and FFmpeg output.
- Adjust and test again if needed. Reduce encoder workload, choose a suitable hardware encoder, or lower resolution and bitrate if the machine or network is unstable. Confirm the result with another representative test.
Troubleshooting common 4K30 failures
FFmpeg cannot find libx264
Your build may not include that encoder. Use a build with libx264 or choose an encoder that is actually available, then check its supported options with local help or documentation. Do not assume a command written for one encoder will behave the same with another.

The stream drops frames or the encoder falls behind
The computer may not be encoding 4K30 fast enough, especially with a slower preset or demanding source. Try a faster preset or a compatible hardware encoder, check system load, and retest. If real-time 4K remains unstable, lower the output resolution or frame rate rather than relying on a bitrate change alone.
YouTube reports unstable bitrate or dropped frames
The upload connection may not sustain the target consistently, or the encoder may be missing its timing. Check sustained upload capacity, leave headroom above the video bitrate, and inspect the encoder logs. Reduce bitrate or resolution and repeat the test if the connection cannot support the chosen output reliably.

The video has the wrong shape, looks soft, or has unexpected color
The example forces every source to 3840×2160 and tags it Rec. 709. A different source aspect ratio may be stretched by the scale filter; use a filter that preserves the intended framing. Upscaling does not create detail. If the source is not SDR Rec. 709, convert it correctly instead of applying Rec. 709 tags alone.
The stream does not connect
Recheck that the ingest URL and current stream key came from YouTube Live Control Room, that the key has not been changed, and that the selected RTMPS endpoint is reachable from your network. Keep the key secret while diagnosing the issue.

Copyright and channel rules still apply
Correct encoder settings do not grant permission to broadcast the video, music, gameplay audio, or other material in your stream. Use content you own or are authorized to use, and review YouTube’s applicable copyright and live-streaming rules before going live. A technically healthy stream can still be interrupted or restricted for policy reasons.
