You can stream an internet radio station to YouTube from a Raspberry Pi by receiving the station’s audio over the network, pairing it with a visual, encoding both as a live audio/video feed, and sending that feed to YouTube Live Control Room’s ingestion URL with your stream key. RTMPS is YouTube’s recommended starting point for a compatible encoder. Before you begin, confirm that you have permission to rebroadcast the station’s programming: a public audio URL does not grant those rights.
What you need before you start
- A Raspberry Pi with a supported operating system, reliable network connection, and the power supply appropriate for its model. Raspberry Pi documents model-specific setup and power requirements; USB and HDMI audio output are supported across Pi models, but 3.5 mm audio hardware varies by model. See Raspberry Pi’s getting-started documentation.
- The station’s actual audio stream URL and details about its protocol, authentication, codec, and any required request headers. Confirm these with the station operator or its stream documentation; YouTube’s guides cannot establish station-specific connection details.
- An encoder that can receive the station feed, create or loop a visual, encode audio and video, and send them to YouTube. The exact commands and settings depend on your Pi model, operating system, encoder build, and station stream format.
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled, an event or stream configured in Live Control Room, and its current ingestion URL and stream key.
- Permission to retransmit the station’s programming on YouTube in the territories where viewers may watch it. Verify the rights with the station or relevant rights holders before going live.
You receive the radio stream over the network, so an analog capture card is not normally needed just to bring online audio into the Pi. An audio-only station feed still needs a visual layer for YouTube’s standard encoder workflow: for example, a still image or an animation that you have the right to use.
Choose an ingestion path
| Path | When it fits | What to account for |
|---|---|---|
| RTMPS | A practical starting point when your encoder supports it; YouTube recommends RTMPS, its secure RTMP option. | Check that the encoder supports RTMPS and can combine the station audio with a visual. Use the URL and key shown for your stream in Live Control Room. |
| HLS | When the encoder or workflow specifically requires HLS. | YouTube’s HLS workflow requires muxed M2TS audio/video, AAC audio, closed GOP, and compliant media playlists with segments of one to four seconds. Segment delivery has higher latency than continuous RTMP-style delivery. |
YouTube’s LiveStreams API documents ingestion addresses and stream names, as well as RTMP/RTMPS, HLS, and DASH ingestion types. For the straightforward route, use the protocol YouTube displays for your stream and one your encoder supports; do not reuse a hard-coded endpoint from an old tutorial.
Set up the Raspberry Pi and station input
- Prepare the board. Install and update a suitable Raspberry Pi OS image, connect the Pi to a reliable network, and use the power supply recommended for that board. Follow the model-specific instructions in Raspberry Pi’s documentation. You do not need to select a particular model based on the available guidance; no cited source benchmarks a specific Pi for this task.
- Verify the source details. Record the exact station URL and whether it needs authentication, a particular request header or user agent, or a specific protocol. A URL that opens in a browser may not be the right input for your encoder; use the station’s published streaming instructions where available.
- Configure the receiving and visual components. In your encoder, set the station URL as the audio input and create or select a visual layer. Confirm that the chosen encoder can decode the station’s stream and produce compatible outgoing audio/video on your installed Pi software. The exact interface, command syntax, and sustainable resolution depend on your specific setup.
- Check the local output before sending it. Confirm that the station audio is being decoded, the visual appears, and the audio is mapped into the outgoing stream. A network radio feed does not require a physical line-in connection unless your setup has some separate local audio source.
Create the YouTube stream and secure its key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room for the channel where you have enabled live streaming, then create or select the event or stream you intend to use.
- Copy the ingestion URL and stream key shown for the chosen protocol. Enter them in the encoder’s corresponding fields. Some encoders separate URL and key; others ask for a combined stream name. Follow the encoder’s field format and YouTube’s displayed stream configuration.
- Keep the stream key private. YouTube describes it as a password-like credential. Do not publish it in a script, screenshot, or public repository. If it is exposed, reset it through YouTube’s live-stream settings and update the encoder with the replacement.
- Start the encoder and wait for YouTube to detect the incoming feed. Review Live Control Room’s preview and stream health before making the event public.
YouTube’s encoder setup documentation covers supported audiovisual ingestion and settings; the LiveStreams API reference describes ingestion addresses and stream-name fields. Use the current values presented for your stream rather than assuming an address or key format.

Choose audio, video, and bandwidth settings
Audio for RTMP or RTMPS
YouTube recommends AAC or MP3 audio for its RTMP/RTMPS encoder profile. Its current encoder settings page recommends stereo audio at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. These are YouTube’s published settings, not a benchmark of what a particular Pi can encode or receive.
Video and keyframes
YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) encoding and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Select resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate based on the visual you are transmitting, your encoder’s capabilities, and available upload capacity. For H.264 at 30 fps, YouTube’s current page lists 720p at a recommended 8 Mbps and minimum 3 Mbps, and 480p at a recommended 4 Mbps and minimum 0.4 Mbps. These are YouTube recommendations, not evidence that a given Pi sustains either profile continuously.

Upload capacity and testing
Measure upload speed, not just download speed, and leave headroom beyond the combined stream bitrate. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend allowing about 20% beyond the stream bitrate. A speed test alone is not enough: YouTube recommends an encoder test with audio and video movement similar to the planned broadcast, then checking stream health and messages. Keep the test unlisted or otherwise controlled if you are not ready for viewers.
Test, monitor, and maintain the stream
- Start an unlisted or controlled test with the same station feed, visual, resolution, and audio settings planned for the live event.
- In Live Control Room, verify that the preview has both sound and picture, that they stay synchronized, and that the stream-health status does not show a problem.
- Check that the Pi’s network connection and power remain stable during the test. Repeat the test under the expected operating conditions; the sources do not establish a particular Pi model’s sustained encoding performance.
- Monitor stream health and messages during the broadcast. YouTube’s API health diagnostics include low bitrate, mismatched frame rate, unsupported audio codec, incorrect audio sample rate, and no audio stream.
Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Likely checks and fixes |
|---|---|
| YouTube reports no audio or the stream is silent | Confirm the station URL is reachable and decoded by the encoder, then check that the audio input is mapped into the outgoing stream. Review YouTube’s health diagnostics for noAudioStream, codec, and sample-rate issues. |
| Buffering, instability, or low bitrate | Measure upload capacity, retain headroom, and lower the video resolution or bitrate if necessary. Test again with the expected audio and visual activity; download speed does not establish whether the upload path is sufficient. |
| The encoder cannot connect | Verify the protocol, ingestion URL, and key against the current Live Control Room settings. For an RTMPS TLS error, confirm that the URL uses rtmps and that you are using the port specified by YouTube and the encoder guidance. |
| YouTube rejects an HLS feed | Check that audio and video are muxed in M2TS, audio is AAC, GOP is closed, and playlists and one-to-four-second segments meet YouTube’s HLS requirements. Verify HTTPS POST/PUT support in the encoder workflow. |
| A copyright match warning appears or the stream is interrupted | Stop or replace the matched material, review restrictions in YouTube Studio, and resolve rights with the station or rights holder. A license alone may not prevent interruption if the rights holder has not allowlisted your channel. |
Copyright and YouTube live-stream rules
A station’s audio being publicly reachable does not mean you may rebroadcast it. YouTube says live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including other live broadcasts; a match may result in a placeholder image, warnings, interruption, or termination. Its terms place responsibility on the provider to secure the rights needed for the broadcast, including music-related rights. Confirm that your permission covers YouTube, the relevant territories, and the station programming you plan to carry. If a rights holder requires channel allowlisting, arrange that before going live.
