A resolution change alone does not explain washed-out color. First determine whether the stream is SDR or HDR, then check whether the problem appears in the actual stream or only in YouTube’s preview or on a display that cannot show HDR. For SDR, YouTube specifies Rec. 709; HDR requires a compatible source, encoder, color settings, and stream configuration.
First find out where the color looks wrong
Before changing encoder settings, compare the Live Control Room preview with actual playback. YouTube says the Live Control Room preview does not show HDR colors, so it cannot by itself confirm that an HDR stream’s color is wrong. Check playback on an HDR-capable device with HDR enabled, and look in the YouTube quality menu for an HDR label. A device without HDR support shows the stream in SDR. YouTube’s HDR streaming guidance explains these playback differences.
- Only the preview looks wrong: Do not treat the Live Control Room preview as proof of an HDR encoding problem.
- Only one display or viewer sees washed-out color: Check that display’s HDR support and settings, and compare playback on another HDR-capable device if available.
- The actual stream looks wrong on capable playback devices: Check the source, encoder color settings, codec, and stream-key configuration below.
Check whether you intended to stream SDR or HDR
If the stream is SDR
Use Rec. 709 color settings. YouTube’s general live encoder guidance identifies 8-bit SDR and Rec. 709 as the SDR workflow. If you changed resolution and also changed color settings, restore the intended SDR configuration and verify Rec. 709 rather than enabling HDR settings without an HDR source. See YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance.
If the stream is HDR
HDR needs a compatible source and a complete compatible encoding chain; changing a single setting does not make SDR footage HDR. YouTube’s documented OBS HDR setup requires OBS 30.1 or later, a hardware HEVC encoder, Main 10 profile, P010 color format, and Rec. 2100 PQ or HLG color space. YouTube recommends HLG. Confirm that the game, camera, or other source actually supplies compatible HDR before selecting these settings. The requirements are described in YouTube’s HDR live-stream instructions.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Verify the stream key and protocol for HDR
If you are sending HDR over HLS, YouTube says to use an HLS stream key and leave “Turn on manual resolution” unchecked. Check the stream key’s protocol and resolution setting in YouTube’s stream configuration; choosing an HDR-capable encoder alone does not establish that the ingestion setup matches YouTube’s HDR workflow. Details are in YouTube’s HLS setup guidance.
Retest without changing several variables at once
- Keep the source content and playback device the same, and note whether you are testing SDR or HDR.
- Change one relevant setting at a time: for SDR, verify Rec. 709; for HDR, check source compatibility, encoder requirements, and stream-key protocol.
- Watch the resulting stream at the same playback quality and compare the color. Account for the playback device’s HDR capability and YouTube’s delivery format when interpreting the result.
This controlled comparison helps separate an encoder change from differences caused by playback capability or stream delivery; it is a diagnostic approach, not a YouTube-prescribed test procedure.

When HDR-to-SDR playback still looks different
YouTube notes that devices without HDR support receive SDR, and that automatic HDR-to-SDR conversion may not produce a perfect result on challenging clips. Its HDR-to-SDR 3D LUT guidance applies to uploads; it should not be treated as a direct setting for a live stream. YouTube’s HDR upload guidance describes that conversion limitation.
Common causes and what to check
| What you see | What to check |
|---|---|
| HDR looks washed out in the Live Control Room preview | The preview does not show HDR colors. Confirm with actual playback instead. |
| HDR appears as SDR on a viewer’s device | Check whether the device supports HDR and has HDR enabled; unsupported devices show SDR. |
| An intended SDR stream looks wrong after a settings change | Verify the encoder is using Rec. 709 for SDR. |
| An intended HDR stream looks wrong on HDR playback | Check that the source is genuinely HDR and that codec, bit depth, color format, color space, and stream protocol match YouTube’s HDR requirements. |
| HDR over HLS does not behave as expected | Use an HLS stream key and leave “Turn on manual resolution” unchecked. |
| HDR content looks different when viewed in SDR | Consider the HDR-to-SDR conversion path; YouTube says automatic conversion can fall short on challenging clips. |
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is for keeping uploaded videos live on YouTube, not for diagnosing or correcting a color-settings problem. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud keeps the loop running without a computer or home connection staying on. It streams the file as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it can recover automatically if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free day.
