The answer depends on the average power drawn at the wall by the computer or encoder and the peripherals you keep running. Measure that setup, then calculate its daily and monthly energy use and apply your own electricity tariff.
Calculate the electricity use from measured watts
Use average wall power in watts—not the stream’s resolution label—to estimate energy consumption:
- Daily energy: average watts × 24 ÷ 1,000 = kWh per day.
- 30-day energy: daily kWh × 30 = kWh per 30 days.
- Approximate energy charge: 30-day kWh × your applicable tariff in ₹/kWh.
For example, a hypothetical 100 W setup running continuously uses 2.4 kWh a day and 72 kWh in 30 days. At a tariff of T rupees per kWh, the energy-only component would be 72 × T rupees for those 30 days. This is illustrative arithmetic, not a benchmark for any particular computer or encoder.
Measure the whole setup you want to count
A plug-in electricity meter can give you a direct reading for the equipment on the outlet. Measure over a representative period while the stream is running. Include only the equipment whose use you want in the estimate, and note whether that includes a monitor, router, capture equipment, or other peripherals. If the meter reports energy over time, use that measured kWh directly; if you use its average-watt reading, apply the formulas above.

Why 4K60 bitrate is not an electricity figure
YouTube’s current live encoder guidance recommends 35 Mbps for 4K/2160p at 60fps using AV1 or H.265, and 50 Mbps using H.264. It also lists constant bitrate encoding for RTMP/RTMPS and says incoming live streams are automatically transcoded into multiple output formats. Those settings describe video encoding and outgoing data rate—not the encoder’s wall power or kWh. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance.
YouTube’s HLS documentation says HEVC can generally provide 25% to 50% more compression than H.264 at the same video quality, potentially allowing a lower bitrate, particularly for 4K. That is a compression comparison; it does not establish how much electricity a particular creator’s encoder will use or save. See Google’s HLS ingestion documentation.

Keep creator and viewer electricity separate
The estimate for a local loop should cover the creator-side encoder and whichever local peripherals are included in the measurement. It does not include power used by viewers’ screens, playback devices, or networks. A 2021 USENIX study measured YouTube 360-degree video playback on a Pixel 2 connected to a power monitor; it concerns viewer-side phone playback and does not establish the draw of a desktop or dedicated encoder running a 4K60 live loop. Estimate the cost using your Indian electricity bill
Multiply your measured or calculated kWh by the applicable per-unit energy tariff for your location and tariff category. There is no single India-wide household tariff established here. Your actual bill may also include fixed charges, tariff slabs, taxes, or other adjustments, so this multiplication estimates the energy-only component rather than the total bill increase.

Run the loop locally or in the cloud
A local PC or encoder gives you direct hardware and content control, but its ongoing electricity cost depends on measured wall power and your tariff.
