The VPS must sustain the chosen upload bitrate continuously; a running FFmpeg process alone does not guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming. YouTube says the channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days; first-time activation can take up to 24 hours. Check YouTube’s current live-streaming requirements.
- A Windows VPS with enough CPU for your chosen encoding method, sufficient disk space for the media and logs, and sustained outbound bandwidth for the stream.
- An FFmpeg build compatible with the Windows environment and, if re-encoding, the video encoder you plan to use.
- A video file or prepared playlist that you have the rights to broadcast.
VPS images, Windows versions, and supervisor tools differ. Use the documentation for the actual Windows Server version and process supervisor on your host; test startup, restart, paths, and account permissions on that VPS before relying on it.
1. Create a YouTube Live stream and protect its key
- Open YouTube Studio and select Go Live. Create or schedule an encoder stream, following the labels shown in the current Studio interface.
- In Live Control Room, copy the ingest server URL and stream key. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” See YouTube’s live-stream settings guidance.
- Keep the key in a protected configuration file or script location accessible only to the Windows account running FFmpeg. Do not expose it in screenshots, public repositories, or shared logs. If it is compromised, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder.
2. Choose the input and output settings
Decide whether to copy or re-encode
Stream-copying avoids encoding the video again and uses less CPU, but works only when the source tracks and container are compatible with the output. Re-encoding lets you set the codec, bitrate, frame rate, and keyframe interval, but consumes VPS CPU. Check that the installed FFmpeg build includes the encoder you choose, and test the workload on the actual VPS rather than assuming its plan can sustain it.
Match YouTube’s ingest guidance
YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports RTMP or RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Use the bitrate recommendation for your exact codec, resolution, and frame rate in YouTube’s encoder settings table; for example, its H.264 1080p30 row recommends 14 Mbps video and lists 5 Mbps as the minimum. YouTube transcodes incoming streams for different playback formats.

Use the RTMPS endpoint if Live Control Room provides it; YouTube recommends encrypted RTMPS ingest. Do not copy a generic ingest URL or stream-key format when your Live Control Room gives you the actual destination.
Check upload capacity, not just download speed
YouTube recommends planning upload capacity for the primary stream plus a backup stream, with 20% additional headroom, and testing the real outbound connection. A VPS provider’s advertised download speed does not establish that the host can sustain your broadcast bitrate. Leave room for network variation and other VPS traffic. YouTube’s live streaming troubleshooting guidance covers testing and stream health.

3. Run FFmpeg with a looping file
This Windows batch-command template is illustrative, not tested. Replace the executable path, input file, ingest URL, and key with your own values. It loops one file, re-encodes video with libx264 and audio with AAC, and sends an RTMPS/FLV output. Confirm your FFmpeg build supports libx264, check the settings against the selected YouTube profile and source, and test privately or unlisted before a public broadcast.

A 60-frame GOP at 30 fps represents a two-second interval; if you change frame rate or keyframe settings, keep the interval within YouTube’s guidance.

-re reads the file at its native rate rather than sending it as fast as possible; -stream_loop -1 repeats the input indefinitely; -nostdin prevents FFmpeg from checking for console input in background operation. FFmpeg documents its command structure and background behavior in the FFmpeg manual and FAQ.
Use a playlist instead of one file
For a sequence of files, FFmpeg’s concat demuxer reads a list in order. Its inputs need compatible streams, codecs, time bases, and stream layout. Incorrect durations can create timestamp gaps or artifacts. Normalize the files beforehand or use a concat filter and re-encode when their formats differ. Follow the concat demuxer documentation for the list format and compatibility requirements.

4. Keep FFmpeg running on Windows
Run FFmpeg under a Windows account that can read the media and write logs. Use absolute file paths and set a known working directory. With background execution, retain -nostdin; FFmpeg’s FAQ also documents redirecting standard input from NUL on Windows.
Configure the Windows supervisor you choose to start the process at boot and retry after an unexpected exit. Avoid duplicate FFmpeg instances, add a delay before retries, capture error output, and alert on repeated failure. There is no single universally verified Task Scheduler or service-wrapper configuration for every Windows Server image, so consult documentation for your specific version and tool, then test it. A restart policy can relaunch a process that exits; it cannot fix a missing media file, invalid key, suspended VPS, or inadequate network.

5. Test the broadcast and monitor it
- Start FFmpeg and check that it connects to the ingest endpoint without repeatedly exiting or reporting output errors.
- In Live Control Room, confirm YouTube receives the feed and inspect the preview before making the broadcast public.
- Check video, audio, and stream health. Test with motion and audio similar to the planned content, and monitor the VPS’s CPU, memory, network, disk space, input availability, and FFmpeg logs.
- Keep watching for process exits or connection failures. A supervisor can retry a failed process, but short network interruptions may require output recovery or a restart; neither mechanism handles every outage cause.
YouTube automatically archives streams shorter than 12 hours. Do not assume one never-ending broadcast will create an indefinitely growing archive; plan how you will end and recreate a stream and preserve any local recording you need. See YouTube’s encoder instructions for its current archive behavior.
Common problems and fixes
- YouTube does not receive the stream: Check that the server URL and key were copied from the correct Live Control Room stream, that the key has not been reset, and that the VPS can reach the endpoint. Update the encoder if you replace the key.
- FFmpeg exits when launched in the background: Use
-nostdinor the documented WindowsNULinput redirection, and confirm the supervisor’s account, working directory, and paths. - Stream health is poor or the connection drops: Test sustained outbound capacity, lower the selected bitrate or profile if the VPS cannot carry it, and retain YouTube’s recommended upload headroom. Check whether the host is also sending a backup stream or other traffic.
- Video or audio is missing or rejected: Inspect the input’s tracks and codecs, confirm the FFmpeg build has the selected encoder, and match YouTube’s supported codecs and output settings. Re-encode incompatible source media.
- Gaps or artifacts appear between playlist items: Check concat input compatibility and duration entries. Normalize different files or use a filter/re-encode approach.
- The process does not return after a reboot: Verify the chosen supervisor’s startup configuration, account permissions, working directory, and retry behavior on the VPS’s specific Windows image. Test a reboot rather than relying on a process restart setting alone.
Cost and trade-offs
A Windows VPS keeps the encoder and media on a remote host, but you still manage Windows, FFmpeg, process supervision, storage, and the ongoing network connection. Compare VPS offers for supported Windows versions, sustained outbound traffic terms, CPU capacity, and reboot/process-management access. No provider or plan is established here as able to encode a particular profile; validate that with a workload test.
