You need to schedule two separate things: the YouTube event in YouTube Studio, and the local encoder or player that sends your playlist to YouTube. Windows Task Scheduler can launch that software at a chosen time, but it does not play media or make a YouTube event go live by itself. Whether the feed starts without an operator depends on your encoder setup and YouTube’s auto-start settings.
How the two schedules fit together
YouTube Studio manages the livestream event and its public watch page. Windows Task Scheduler starts an executable or script on your computer. The encoder or player reads your playlist and sends video and audio to YouTube using the stream URL and stream key. A scheduled Windows task only handles the local launch; the computer, network, encoder, credentials, and YouTube event must all be ready.
- Create or schedule the YouTube event in Live Control Room.
- Configure an encoder or player to read the playlist and connect to YouTube.
- Use Task Scheduler to start that program or its wrapper script at the desired time.
- Choose whether someone will click Go live after preview, or whether the configured stream can start automatically.
Schedule the YouTube event first
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live, then open Manage in Live Control Room.
- Create a new stream or reuse an existing stream’s settings. Set the title, description, privacy, and scheduled date and time.
- Save the event and note its watch page so you can check that it is accessible as intended. Scheduled events can appear as upcoming, allowing viewers to visit the page and opt into notifications.
- In the stream settings, confirm whether auto-start and auto-stop are enabled. With the manual encoder workflow, YouTube asks you to wait for the preview and then select Go live. Do not assume the event will publish automatically just because Windows launched the encoder.

Configure the playlist and encoder
Task Scheduler does not natively open a playlist, loop media, encode video, or connect to YouTube. Choose an encoder or player that can read your playlist format, send its output to YouTube’s stream URL with your stream key, and support the startup behavior you need. The exact playlist syntax, command-line options, reconnect behavior, and unattended-operation requirements are specific to that software; follow its current official documentation rather than guessing at flags.

Protect the stream key
Treat the stream key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to send a feed to your stream. Keep it out of public scripts, screenshots, and shared folders. If you reset the key in YouTube, update the saved key in the encoder before the next scheduled task runs.
Check files and playback behavior
- Use playlist and media paths that the Windows account running the task can access. A mapped drive or user-specific folder may not be available when a task runs unattended.
- Confirm the playlist order, looping behavior, audio, and video in the encoder’s own preview or playback checks.
- Check that your media is licensed for livestreaming and complies with YouTube’s copyright and reused-content rules. A scheduled stream is not an exception to those rules.
Create the scheduled Windows task
In Task Scheduler, create a time-based trigger and an action that starts the encoder, player, or a batch/script wrapper. Microsoft documents Task Scheduler triggers and actions, and the schtasks /create reference describes schedule types and the /tr field for the program or command to run.

- Open Task Scheduler from the Windows Start menu. Choose Create Task if you need to configure the account and run conditions explicitly, or Create Basic Task for a simpler guided setup.
- On the Triggers tab, create a trigger for the desired date and time, or choose an appropriate recurring schedule. Check the time zone and recurrence carefully.
- On the Actions tab, choose Start a program. Enter the full path to the executable or wrapper. If the path contains spaces, quote it where required by the program or script syntax.
- Supply only the arguments and working directory documented by your selected encoder or player. If its startup requires multiple steps, put them in a wrapper script and have the task launch that script.
- Review the task’s account and conditions. Ensure the account has access to the executable, playlist and media files, and that the computer will be available when the trigger fires.
- Save the task, then run it manually once to confirm it launches the intended workflow. Check the encoder’s preview and YouTube’s Live Control Room rather than treating a successful task launch as proof that the stream is live.

Choose manual or automatic Go live

YouTube’s encoder instructions describe the preview-and-Go-live flow, while its stream settings documentation covers auto-start and auto-stop. Do an end-to-end test before relying on unattended operation.

Test and prepare before the scheduled time
YouTube Help recommends setting up the encoder at least 2 hours before a livestream and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled time. These are YouTube’s operational recommendations, not guarantees that a particular setup will work.
- Confirm the task runs under the intended Windows account and that the computer will be on, awake, and connected.
- Verify the stream key, media paths, playlist order, and audio/video output.
- Check the YouTube preview and confirm the event’s privacy and watch-page accessibility.
- Check your available upload capacity. YouTube recommends 20% upload bandwidth headroom; a connection disruption can break a stream.
- Monitor stream health in Live Control Room. YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived.

Troubleshoot a scheduled playlist stream
