Confirm that the channel can go live
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. Its current eligibility guidance sets the minimum age for live streaming at 16. Check the channel in YouTube Studio before building the broadcast: YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements.
Clear rights for the exact music recordings
Make a list of the precise compositions and recordings you intend to play, then confirm you have the rights needed to stream each one. A devotional theme or traditional composition does not establish that a particular modern performance or recording is free to use. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content; a match may interrupt a broadcast. Even with a license, ask the rights holder whether your channel must be allowlisted in Content ID. See YouTube’s guidance on copyrighted content in live streams and YouTube for Artists’ copyright guidance.
Do not test unverified recordings on a public 24/7 stream and assume that a lack of an immediate claim means you have permission. Resolve rights questions with the relevant owners for the exact material.

Choose between one continuous stream and sessions
A single 24/7 broadcast is convenient for continuity, but it is a poor choice if you need YouTube to preserve a dependable full archive. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived and that streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If the archive matters, plan separate sessions under 12 hours and make local recordings as a backup. The platform’s guidance is at Archive live streams.
How to stream music on YouTube with OBS
1. Prepare the audio, visual, and recording plan

Assemble a playlist only from recordings cleared for your channel to stream. Keep a record of the rights or permissions associated with each item.

Choose the visual for the stream: for example, an appropriate still image or a loop you have permission to use. Make sure the audio and image play together correctly in OBS before going live.

If you need an archive, enable OBS local recording and check that the destination drive has enough free space. YouTube’s archive warning makes this especially important for long sessions; verify that the recording file is being created and growing during a test.

2. Create an encoder broadcast in YouTube Studio

Open YouTube Studio and select Go Live.

Create or schedule a broadcast using the encoder workflow, then open its stream settings.

Copy the stream URL and stream key shown there. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your broadcast. Do not show it in screenshots, share it publicly, or include it in a public post.

3. Connect OBS to YouTube

In OBS, open Settings > Stream.

Select YouTube as the service if it is available, and follow the connection flow. If you are using a custom service configuration, enter the server URL from YouTube Studio and paste the stream key into OBS.

Create a scene containing your authorized music source and visual. Check that the correct audio source is selected, the meters respond during playback, and the image is framed as intended.

Use OBS’s official help resources if you need application-specific guidance: OBS Help. YouTube’s current Studio instructions should take precedence if a menu or connection flow differs from older walkthroughs.

4. Set a bitrate and video quality your connection can sustain
For H.264 at 1080p and 30 fps, YouTube’s current encoder settings recommend a video bitrate in the range of 5–14 Mbps. That range is not a universal minimum or a promise that a connection will remain stable. YouTube also recommends maintaining 20% upload-bandwidth headroom over the total stream bitrate. For a mostly static devotional visual, higher resolution may not improve the viewing experience enough to justify the extra upload demand. Pick a resolution, frame rate, and bitrate that your connection can sustain for the full session, with headroom for normal variation. Test the complete setup rather than relying on a speed test alone.

5. Preview, test, and start the stream

Start streaming from OBS. In YouTube Studio, confirm that the incoming preview appears and inspect stream health.

Listen to the full audio path, check the visual, and confirm there are no unintended muted sources, clipping, gaps, or unwanted desktop sounds.

For a scheduled encoder broadcast, use Studio’s go-live control when the preview is ready and the workflow calls for it. Keep OBS running while the broadcast is active.

Run a test long enough to reveal problems that a brief preview might miss, and monitor YouTube’s stream-health feedback during the test and the live session.

Keep the broadcast reliable and protect the archive
Plan for interruptions
OBS sends the program from the computer and internet connection where it runs. A power cut, computer restart, network outage, or OBS failure can stop the feed. For a long-running setup, monitor the computer, connection, audio playback, and stream health; consider a UPS sized for the actual load and desired runtime if local power interruptions are a concern. A UPS is optional, not a YouTube or OBS requirement.
Make archives a separate operational goal
If you need a complete recording, do not rely on a single YouTube archive for a stream that runs beyond 12 hours. Use local recording, check that its files remain usable, and schedule sessions shorter than 12 hours when you want YouTube’s automatic archive. Balance that structure against the continuity you want viewers to have.
Troubleshooting common OBS YouTube stream problems

YouTube does not receive the OBS feed: Check that OBS has the stream URL and key from the intended broadcast, that the key was pasted correctly, and that the channel is eligible to stream. Keep the key private; if it may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.

The preview buffers or stream health is poor: Reduce the bitrate or resolution and test again. Confirm that total upload capacity has the recommended 20% headroom above the stream bitrate, and use a stable connection rather than choosing settings at the edge of capacity.

Audio is missing or the visual is blank: In OBS, verify the scene sources, playback, audio meters, and selected output. Test the entire loop before the public broadcast rather than assuming a playlist is playing because the scene is visible.

The live stream is interrupted after music starts: YouTube scans for third-party content. Review whether the exact recording is cleared for streaming and whether its rights holder must allowlist your channel in Content ID. A license does not necessarily prevent automated interruption if allowlisting is needed.

The YouTube archive is incomplete or absent: A stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Use a local OBS recording and, when a YouTube archive is needed, run sessions under 12 hours.
