How Much Upload Speed Does a 1080p 60fps YouTube Live Stream Need?

For 1080p60 YouTube Live, YouTube recommends 17 Mbps H.264 or 12 Mbps AV1/H.265. Add 20% upload headroom and account for other network traffic.

For a 1080p60 YouTube Live stream, YouTube recommends an encoder bitrate of 17 Mbps with H.264 or 12 Mbps with AV1/H.265. YouTube also recommends keeping 20% of upload bandwidth in reserve, which works out to roughly 20.4 Mbps of available upload capacity for H.264 or 14.4 Mbps for AV1/H.265. These are practical targets, not guarantees of uninterrupted streaming.

Recommended 1080p60 bitrate and upload capacity

The encoder bitrate is the data rate your streaming software sends. Your internet connection needs additional capacity beyond that rate so the stream has room to operate reliably. YouTube’s current guidance lists these settings for 1080p at 60 frames per second:

Video codec YouTube minimum encoder bitrate YouTube recommended encoder bitrate Approximate upload target with 20% headroom
AV1 or H.265 (HEVC) 4 Mbps 12 Mbps About 14.4 Mbps
H.264 6 Mbps 17 Mbps About 20.4 Mbps

The minimums are lower than the recommended settings; they should not be mistaken for the target for a reliable, high-quality 1080p60 stream. The upload targets in the last column are calculated by adding 20% to YouTube’s recommended encoder bitrates. YouTube does not present them as separate official minimums or promise that a connection at those speeds will remain stable. See YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance and its streaming tips.

Check upload speed, not download speed

Run a speed test and compare its upload result with the target for your chosen codec. A plan’s advertised download speed does not tell you how much capacity is available for sending a live stream. YouTube notes that download speeds are often higher than upload speeds.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Check the connection under conditions similar to the planned stream. Other people or devices using the network, and other applications uploading data, can reduce the capacity available to your streaming computer. Allow for those simultaneous uploads on top of the stream’s bitrate and headroom.

Configure and test the stream

  1. Choose the bitrate for the codec. For 1080p60, use YouTube’s recommended 12 Mbps for AV1/H.265 or 17 Mbps for H.264.
  2. Set the encoder format. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), RTMP/RTMPS, and keyframes every 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds between keyframes. Follow the encoder settings guidance for the other settings that apply to your setup.
  3. Test before the event. Check picture and audio, including movement similar to what you expect to stream. Confirm the stream looks and sounds right at the intended resolution and frame rate.
  4. Watch stream health while live. Monitor YouTube’s stream-health indicators and respond to warnings; a speed test measures capacity at one point in time, not guaranteed continuity.

If the stream is unstable

  • Upload result is below the target: Reduce competing uploads or choose settings your connection can sustain. If the available upload capacity is still insufficient, a faster-upload internet service may be needed.
  • Other users or apps are uploading: Pause or limit those transfers where possible, then retest. Shared network capacity can leave less bandwidth for the stream.
  • Wi-Fi is unstable: Trying a wired Ethernet connection may help with local wireless instability, but it cannot increase the upload capacity supplied by your internet provider.
  • YouTube reports a connectivity disruption: Check the connection and stream health rather than assuming that the encoder bitrate alone is the cause. YouTube notes that connectivity problems can interrupt a stream.
