If a recorded lesson is black in your OBS preview, start by checking the source in the active scene and the lesson file itself—not the YouTube connection. Confirm whether audio still plays and whether the OBS preview is black; those details help distinguish a media or rendering problem from a stream that is disconnecting. The title alone does not establish one cause or a guaranteed fix.
First, identify where the picture disappears
Look at the OBS preview while the lesson should be playing. Check whether the lesson source is present and visible in the active scene, whether audio continues, and whether YouTube receives a black picture or instead shows a stream that is dropping or disconnecting.
- OBS preview is black: Check the source, file selection, playback state, and rendering load.
- Preview looks right but YouTube is black: Compare the OBS preview with the actual stream output and inspect the scene and output configuration.
- The stream disconnects or drops frames: That is different from a local media preview problem. OBS associates dropped frames with network stability or bitrate to the ingest server; use its stream connection troubleshooting guide.
These symptoms do not identify a specific cause by themselves. Record what you observe before changing settings.
Check the lesson’s Media Source
OBS’s built-in Media Source is intended for media files and supports common video and audio extensions. In the active scene, select the Media Source and confirm its Local File setting points to the intended lesson. Check that the actual file type is among the formats listed in OBS’s Media Sources documentation.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Match playback controls to the lesson
- Loop: Enable it if the lesson should repeat continuously.
- Restart playback when source becomes active: Enable it if the lesson should begin at the start whenever the source becomes active or visible.
- Show nothing when playback ends: Use this if the final frame should not remain visible after playback finishes.
- Close file when inactive: Consider this only if closing and reloading the file when the source is inactive fits your scene transitions and reload behavior.
These controls govern playback, visibility, and file lifecycle; OBS does not document any of them as a universal black-screen fix. Change one setting at a time and check the result.
Test hardware decoding as a controlled check
Media Source offers Use hardware decoding when available. OBS describes this as asking the GPU to decode certain file types when the GPU has an appropriate decoder. If the option is available, toggle it once and compare playback, keeping other settings unchanged. A change in behavior can help narrow the diagnosis, but the setting is not a guaranteed cure.

When VLC Video is worth trying
OBS’s VLC Video source uses VLC libraries and can be an alternative when extended media support is useful. OBS says VLC must be installed for the source to appear, and 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. This is another source path to test, not a fix proven to work for every file or system. Use it when the file-support path gives you a reason to, then verify playback and scene visibility.
Separate rendering overload from a source problem
A black picture is not the same symptom as choppy or laggy rendering. If OBS is overloaded or rendering poorly, reduce scene work and test again. OBS explains that compositing and rendering use GPU capacity and recommends measures such as reducing oversized media, simplifying complex scenes, and limiting resource-heavy filters and browser sources. For video and audio files, OBS recommends Media Source or VLC Source in its encoding performance troubleshooting guide.

OBS’s system requirements page lists baseline platform requirements: Windows 10 or 11 with a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU; macOS 11 (Big Sur) or later with an Intel or Apple Silicon CPU and OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU; and Linux/Unix with an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU and X window system or Wayland. OBS cautions, “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS.” Meeting those baselines is not a workload guarantee.
Verify the complete lesson cycle before relying on it
Run a short test recording or stream before putting the scene into production. OBS’s Quick Start Guide recommends testing for a few minutes rather than starting a first stream without a check. During the test, confirm the picture and audio, source visibility changes, what happens at the end of playback, looping if enabled, and return to the normal scene. The cited OBS guidance does not prescribe a 24/7-specific soak-test duration.

What to collect if the screen is still black
If the source remains black, gather enough information to distinguish file decoding, source visibility, rendering, and connection symptoms before concluding that a particular component is at fault:
- Operating system and OBS version.
- Lesson file container and codec, if known.
- Source type and its relevant properties, including hardware-decoding state.
- Whether audio continues, whether the source is active and visible, and whether OBS preview differs from YouTube output.
- An OBS log from a reproduction of the problem.
Without those details, the cause cannot be assigned reliably.
