If your YouTube Live stream buffers while FFmpeg reads a video from a network drive, first find out which part is falling behind: the share, FFmpeg’s processing, or your upload connection. Run the same FFmpeg command once from the network drive and once from a local copy of the same file, keeping output settings unchanged. Then compare FFmpeg’s logs with YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages. A viewer-side buffering symptom alone does not identify the cause.
Identify where the stream is falling behind
A stream passes through three relevant stages: FFmpeg reads the source, processes or passes through its audio and video, and sends the output to YouTube. A problem at any stage can show up as buffering or stuttering to viewers. Diagnose the stage before changing options: a larger buffer cannot supply missing network capacity, and a lower video bitrate will not repair an unreliable file share.
Capture the details before changing anything
Record the FFmpeg version, operating system, type of network share or storage protocol, full command with the stream key removed, and the relevant log lines. Note whether the command transcodes the video or uses stream copy. These details affect which settings are relevant; without them, there is no reliable universal queue, cache, or share-tuning value to recommend.
Compare the network source with a local copy
- Choose the exact video file used by the stream and make a local copy. An external SSD can be a convenient place for this test if you do not have enough internal space, but the test—not a particular drive—is what helps isolate the input path.
- Run the existing FFmpeg command against the local copy, changing only the input path. Keep the output settings, destination, and other conditions as consistent as possible.
- Repeat from the network share and compare the two runs. If the local-copy run resolves the symptom, investigate the share, its network path, and read consistency. That result points toward the input path but does not prove a specific cause such as a particular protocol or device.
FFmpeg accepts ordinary files and network inputs; its documented -re/-readrate option paces file input to simulate real-time capture. It is not documented as a fix for a slow network share. Do not add it indiscriminately, especially when the input is already a live or capture source. See the FFmpeg command-line documentation and the FFmpeg option source.

Read FFmpeg speed and errors
While each run is active, watch FFmpeg’s speed= statistic and any input, decode, filter, or output errors. If processing speed falls below real time, investigate processing load and the filters or encoder settings in use. If the local and network runs both keep up, but YouTube reports unstable ingestion, check the outbound connection next. An archive that continues growing can provide another useful clue; inspect it for audio or video faults if the symptom recurs.
Check YouTube’s view of the incoming stream
Open YouTube Live Control Room and review stream health and any messages during the same period as the FFmpeg run. Compare their timing with FFmpeg’s log and speed display. YouTube’s streaming tips and troubleshooting guidance cover its own ingestion and connection checks. A viewer report by itself is not enough to distinguish source-read stalls from processing or upload problems.

Check whether FFmpeg can process the stream in real time
If FFmpeg’s reported speed is below real time, the source drive may not be the bottleneck. Review the work FFmpeg is doing: transcoding, filters, resolution, frame rate, and encoder settings. Compare the logs from the network and local-copy runs before changing the command. If both behave the same way, the local-copy result makes a share-read issue less likely, but it does not identify the exact processing limit.
Do not prescribe a universal -thread_queue_size, -rtbufsize, or -re value on the basis of buffering alone. FFmpeg documents rtbufsize as memory used for buffering real-time frames, while nobuffer reduces buffering latency during initial input analysis; neither is established as a remedy for file-share read stalls. Consult the FFmpeg all-options documentation and the manual for your installed build. Online FFmpeg documentation changes over time, so capture ffmpeg -version and verify option details against the matching version.

Verify upload capacity and encoder settings
Measure outbound upload, not download
YouTube says the outbound connection must be sufficient for the stream bitrate and recommends 20% headroom over the total stream bitrate. Test upload speed and reliability on the connection actually carrying the stream; a download-speed result is not a substitute. Shared connections may limit the bandwidth available to one stream, and disruptions can break a stream. See YouTube’s current streaming tips. These are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular connection will remain stable.
Match the encoder output to YouTube’s current guidance
Only after checking source reads, FFmpeg processing, and upload should you change output settings. YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 ingest settings, up to 60 fps, and recommends constant bitrate (CBR) with a 2-second keyframe interval; do not exceed 4 seconds. Its recommended H.264 bitrates include the following examples. The applicable bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate, so consult the full YouTube encoder settings table for the actual stream.

| H.264 output | YouTube-recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 or 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s platform recommendations, not independent test results. If upload headroom is inadequate, lowering output bitrate or resolution may create more network margin, but it trades off image quality. It will not establish or fix a slow source read or an overloaded encoder.

| What you observe | What it suggests | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| The local-copy run is smooth, but the network-share run buffers. | The input path is implicated; the comparison does not prove the specific fault. | Investigate the share, its network path, and read consistency. Keep output settings fixed during comparisons. |
| FFmpeg reports speed below real time on both runs. | Processing may not be keeping up. | Review transcoding, filters, encoder settings, and processing load. Use logs and the exact command to guide changes. |
| FFmpeg keeps up, but YouTube reports unstable ingestion. | The outbound path or available upload capacity may be the issue. | Measure upload capacity on the stream’s connection, account for YouTube’s recommended headroom, and check for shared use or disruptions. |
| YouTube health appears normal, but viewers still report a problem. | The symptom alone does not locate the fault. | Compare timing, FFmpeg logs, and a local archive if available; inspect the archive for audio or video faults. |
Do not treat arbitrary buffer or queue changes as a diagnosis. The available documentation does not establish a universal SMB/NFS tuning value or a queue size that cures network-drive read stalls.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does adding -re fix buffering from a network drive?
Not as a general fix. FFmpeg documents it as a way to pace file input for real-time simulation, not as a remedy for a slow share.
Does a local-copy test prove the NAS is faulty?
No. It implicates the input path if the local run resolves the symptom, but further checks are needed to identify the cause.
