To stream a prerecorded coding tutorial as a YouTube Live event, create or schedule the event in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, send the video through an encoder using the event’s stream URL and key, check the preview, then start the event. For a typical H.264 1080p tutorial, YouTube recommends 5 Mbps at 30 fps or 6 Mbps at 60 fps, with a 2-second keyframe interval. Test the complete stream before the audience arrives; the right settings also depend on your source file, encoder, and reliable upload capacity.
Before you set up the stream
YouTube’s documented workflow treats the prerecorded file as the encoder’s video input: the encoder sends it into a YouTube Live event. This is different from uploading the file as an ordinary YouTube video. You need an eligible channel, a computer-based encoder or suitable standalone hardware, the video file, and a stable internet connection capable of sustaining the selected bitrate.
- YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have live-streaming restrictions within the previous 90 days. Its setup guidance says streamers must be at least 16. Check the current eligibility requirements at YouTube’s general live-streaming setup help.
- Have the final tutorial file ready and confirm that your encoder can play its video and audio formats. Test the entire path, including the encoder preview and the audio viewers will hear.
- If you want viewers to find the event in advance, schedule it rather than starting an unscheduled stream at the last minute.
Create or schedule the YouTube Live event
- In YouTube Studio, open Go Live to enter Live Control Room. Create a new stream, or open the Manage tab and schedule one. YouTube says scheduling can let you promote the event and give viewers a way to set reminders. See YouTube’s live-stream setup and scheduling tips.
- Enter a clear title and description, select the relevant category or stream type, and complete audience details. Choose Public, Unlisted, or Private according to who should be able to watch. Review the event settings before you share its link.
- Use tags only when they help with common misspellings or similar cases; YouTube says tags have limited value for discovery. Do not rely on them to make the tutorial visible.
- Consider whether you want DVR enabled. DVR lets viewers pause and rewind during a live stream. YouTube notes that DVR may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. Streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, according to its encoder setup guidance. Check the current options in the event settings.
Connect the encoder and load the prerecorded tutorial
- In Live Control Room, open the stream’s encoder settings and copy the stream URL and stream key. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Keep the key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your event.
- In your encoder, choose YouTube or a custom RTMP/RTMPS destination, then enter the URL and key. Use RTMPS, YouTube’s recommended encrypted version of RTMP, when the encoder supports it. If you suspect the key was exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and replace the saved value in your encoder.
- Set the prerecorded tutorial file as the encoder’s video source. Configure the file to play through the intended duration; if you want a single tutorial, do not enable looping unless you intend the video to repeat. Check that the encoder is sending the correct audio source as well as the picture.
- Start the encoder’s output and wait for the stream preview to appear in Live Control Room. Inspect the beginning of the tutorial, confirm that speech and desktop audio are audible, and verify that the picture is not cropped or unexpectedly scaled.
- For a scheduled event, click Go live in Live Control Room when the preview is ready. YouTube advises setting up encoders in advance, checking preview, and monitoring audio and video quality. End the event in YouTube when the tutorial is complete, then stop the encoder as appropriate.
For the current interface and setup options, see YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings.
Choose resolution, bitrate, and keyframes
Match the outgoing settings to the prerecorded file where practical, and choose a bitrate your upload connection can sustain continuously. YouTube automatically transcodes a live stream for viewers, but that does not remove the need for a stable encoder feed. Its current encoder guidance recommends the following H.264 video bitrates:

| Output format | YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps |
These are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular computer or connection will deliver a clean stream. If the upload connection fluctuates or cannot sustain the selected bitrate, test at a lower setting rather than sending a bitrate that repeatedly drops.
- Keyframe interval: YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Rate control: Its listed RTMP/RTMPS settings use constant bitrate (CBR) for H.264.
- Audio: YouTube lists AAC or MP3 as supported audio codecs.
- Protocol: Prefer RTMPS when supported by the encoder.
Use a YouTube preset if your encoder provides one, then confirm the values rather than assuming the preset matches the file and connection. The complete current recommendations are in YouTube’s encoder settings help.

Choose latency and plan a real test
Latency matters most when you need to respond to viewers while the tutorial is playing. For a prerecorded lesson with little or no live interaction, YouTube says lower latency is less important; lower latency can also increase playback buffering. Choose the latency setting in Live Control Room based on whether timely chat interaction matters more than uninterrupted playback.
Before the scheduled event, test the same file, encoder, destination settings, and internet connection you will use live. Watch the preview and, when practical, check playback from a viewer’s perspective. Confirm that the tutorial starts where expected, remains in sync with its audio, and reaches the intended ending. YouTube’s guidance recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream quality.

Copyright, permissions, and tutorial content
A prerecorded tutorial does not become exempt from YouTube’s copyright rules just because it is sent as a live stream. Before broadcasting, make sure you have rights to the tutorial’s footage, music, images, code demonstrations, and any third-party material included in it. A coding tutorial may also capture licensed software, game footage, or other copyrighted content on screen; check the relevant permissions and licenses rather than assuming that educational context alone authorizes every use.
Review YouTube’s current rules for your channel and content before scheduling. The setup guidance establishes how to create and send the live event, but it does not determine whether a particular tutorial or use of third-party material complies with copyright or monetization policies. Avoid promising that an event will be monetized or remain available based solely on its technical settings.

Alternatives to a computer encoder
Use the computer you already have
For most creators making a single coding tutorial event, an encoder on an existing computer is the straightforward route: it plays the file and sends the stream to YouTube. The computer must remain on and connected for the broadcast, and you need to monitor the output.
Use specialized standalone hardware if you need computer-free playback
YouTube’s hardware encoder listing names the AJA HELO Plus encoder, an H.264 encoder with optional AJA PlayToStream functionality for scheduling and streaming prerecorded media directly to YouTube Live without a computer. This is a specialized hardware path, not a requirement for the ordinary encoder workflow. The cited YouTube listing does not establish its current price or availability.

Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a YouTube channel to keep looping uploaded videos without leaving your computer on, StreamNeo runs the playback from the cloud. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a live camera feed.
- Nothing has to stay on at home; StreamNeo keeps the stream running from the cloud and can automatically recover if YouTube drops it.
- Each slot streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot rather than quality tiers.
- The first day is free with no card, with one free day per account. The monthly plan is $9.99 per month.
For a single event, a local encoder may be all you need; for unattended looping, the cloud removes the need to keep a home computer running. Start your free StreamNeo day.
Quick Recap
Troubleshooting common problems
- No preview appears: Confirm that the encoder is running, the correct event’s stream URL and key are entered, and the channel is eligible for live streaming. If the key was reset, update it in the encoder.
- The stream disconnects or buffers: Check whether the connection can sustain the configured bitrate. Test a lower bitrate and confirm that the encoder is using CBR for H.264 as YouTube recommends.
- The tutorial has no sound: Verify that the intended audio source is enabled in the encoder and that the file itself contains the expected audio track. Check the preview before starting the event.
- Viewers see the wrong content or a repeated tutorial: Check the selected file and playback/loop setting in the encoder before going live.
- The stream key may be compromised: Reset it in Live Control Room and replace the stored key in the encoder before sending another stream.
- Viewers cannot rewind or replay: Check the DVR setting and remember that YouTube may limit or disable DVR for streams longer than 12 hours. Streams under 12 hours are automatically archived according to YouTube’s encoder guidance.
