If Wirecast says “Activation Limit Exceeded” or that your serial number has been activated on too many machines, first deactivate the license on the old computer if you can access it. If you cannot, use Telestream’s License Reset Tool, then activate Wirecast on the dedicated streaming PC. Be aware that the self-service reset clears all activations on that license—not just one computer.
What the activation limit means
Telestream says a single Wirecast license may be active on one computer at a time. A license purchased in multiple quantities permits use on a corresponding number of computers, according to Telestream’s Wirecast FAQ. The activation message means Wirecast cannot complete activation under the license’s current activation state; public documentation cannot show which device is holding an individual license activation.
Wirecast v4 and later licenses are cross-platform between Mac and Windows, but that does not permit one license to be active on both computers simultaneously. Moving the license to a dedicated PC is a transfer, not an additional seat.
Choose the right recovery route

Fix the limit error step by step
1. Deactivate on the original computer if it is available
- Open Wirecast on the computer currently using the license.
- Open the license controls. In Wirecast 16 for Mac, the user guide gives the path Wirecast > Preferences > Licenses. Telestream’s activation support page lists Preferences > Licenses > Deactivate License on Mac and Preferences > Buy/Upgrade > Deactivate License on Windows.
- Choose Deactivate or Deactivate License, depending on the version and operating system, and complete the prompt.
- On the dedicated streaming PC, open Wirecast and activate it with the existing serial number or license key.
Menu labels can differ by Wirecast version. Telestream’s Wirecast 16 Mac user guide documents activation through the Licenses preferences. Do not buy another license just to transfer an existing single-seat license.

2. Reset the license if you cannot deactivate the old machine
- Open Telestream’s License Reset Tool.
- Provide the requested license key and the associated email address or order ID.
- Read the reset warning before submitting. The tool resets all activations on that license.
- After the reset, open Wirecast on the dedicated streaming PC and activate it with the existing license key.
If your license includes multiple quantities and you need only one device released, contact Telestream support for an individual reset instead of clearing every activation.
3. Use offline activation only if the PC has no internet
The Wirecast 16 guide points users without an internet connection to Telestream’s offline activation instructions. Offline activation changes how Wirecast communicates with Telestream; it does not increase the number of computers permitted by the license. Release or reset the prior activation as appropriate, then follow the current offline instructions for your Wirecast version.

If activation still fails
Check the license and purchase route
- Confirm that you are entering the existing license key and that the purchase is for the Wirecast version you are activating.
- If you cannot locate the key, Telestream’s FAQ directs customers to its purchase-history channels. If you bought Wirecast from a reseller, contact that reseller for license recovery.
- If a reset has already been submitted, allow it to complete before retrying activation. Repeated attempts do not establish which computer holds an activation.
- If the platform-specific troubleshooting does not solve the issue, contact Telestream Wirecast activation support.
Persistent Mac license errors
Telestream’s activation support page gives a more involved Mac cleanup after deactivation: quit Wirecast, remove the Telestream and Vara Software preference files or folder listed on that support page if present, restart the Mac, relaunch Wirecast, and activate again. Follow the page’s exact file locations for your system. The page does not clearly state a publication date, so paths may not match every modern macOS or Wirecast version. Do not delete unrelated files; contact Telestream if the listed items are absent or the error remains.
Persistent Windows license errors
Telestream’s page describes a Windows cleanup that follows deactivation: quit and uninstall Wirecast, show hidden folders, remove the listed Telestream XML and Vara Software preference files, restart, download Wirecast again, then activate. Use the exact paths and sequence on the official activation troubleshooting page. Because uninstalling and deleting files are more disruptive than a license reset, use this as a follow-up rather than the first fix. If the instructions do not match your Windows or Wirecast version, ask Telestream support before removing files.
