OBS network-dropped frames mean the connection to YouTube’s ingest server is unstable or cannot sustain your configured bitrate; they do not prove BSNL is at fault. Start by separating network drops from rendering or encoding lag, test over Ethernet if possible, and lower the bitrate until it fits your sustained upload capacity. Then compare OBS’s log with YouTube’s stream-health messages. There is no established universal jitter cutoff that predicts when an OBS stream will drop frames.
First confirm what kind of frames OBS is dropping
OBS distinguishes network-dropped frames from rendering lag and encoding lag. This diagnosis is about network drops: OBS’s connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. A high percentage can eventually disconnect the stream. Rendering or encoding lag points to a different problem, so do not label every performance issue as BSNL upload jitter. See the OBS Project’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide, dated September 30, 2024.
- Note when drops start, how long they last, the dropped-frame percentage, and the bitrate OBS is attempting to send.
- Save the OBS log for the affected session. Include its timestamps when comparing the problem with upload tests or YouTube’s stream-health messages.
Run a controlled connection test
Change one variable at a time. Keep the YouTube ingest setup and stream content as consistent as practical, and repeat tests at comparable times: one speed test cannot describe the stability of an entire broadcast.
1. Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet
If the streaming computer uses Wi-Fi, connect it directly to the router by Ethernet and repeat a private test. OBS recommends trying a wired connection when Wi-Fi may be unstable. If network drops improve, the wireless link is implicated; that alone does not prove the BSNL line or router is fault-free. An Ethernet cable is only needed if you do not already have one, and this test isolates the local wireless link rather than guaranteeing a fix.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Test at a lower bitrate
Check upload bitrate and reduce OBS’s video bitrate until it sits comfortably within the upload capacity you can sustain—not merely a brief peak from a speed test. OBS suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting point, not a guarantee. The available stable capacity and YouTube’s limits both matter. Repeat the test and see whether network drops change.
3. Use representative content and watch stream health
YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate, rehearsing with movement and audio similar to the planned stream, and monitoring stream health during the event. Check YouTube’s messages alongside OBS’s dropped-frame percentage; a successful short test does not establish that a longer stream will be stable. YouTube’s live encoder settings guide says to test before starting a live stream.

Choose a bitrate your connection can hold
YouTube’s published recommendations depend on resolution, frame rate, and codec. They are platform recommendations, not evidence that your connection can sustain that rate. Match the row to your actual encoder setup, then make sure the rate is within stable upload capacity.
| Video setup | H.264 recommended bitrate | AV1 or H.265 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
These are YouTube Help’s current published figures, accessed October 3, 2026; the settings page can change, so check it when configuring a stream. If the recommended rate exceeds your stable upload capacity, reduce the stream bitrate or choose a lower-demand resolution or frame rate rather than assuming a speed-test peak will hold.

Check the encoder and network settings
YouTube’s current live-encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS transport, H.264, H.265, and AV1 video codecs, CBR bitrate encoding, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. These settings do not repair an unstable connection, but matching them to YouTube’s guidance removes avoidable configuration variables. Confirm the selected codec and frame-rate row before applying the bitrate recommendations above.
If drops continue, isolate local software and configuration
- Check whether a VPN, security software, network-priority or optimizer utility, network driver, modem/router connectivity, or faulty network hardware could be contributing. OBS identifies these as possible factors.
- OBS recommends leaving Bind to IP at its default setting. As a diagnostic change, it suggests trying IPv4-only; if that makes no difference, return to IPv4 and IPv6.
- OBS’s network optimizations and TCP pacing options are available on Windows only. Do not assume those options apply to another operating system.
- As a diagnostic, trying another ingest server or service may show whether the issue is destination-specific; it is not a guaranteed fix.
Use OBS’s official troubleshooting steps for the applicable settings. If you are unsure whether hardware is faulty, OBS advises contacting your ISP rather than buying a router before testing.

Adaptive bitrate is a workaround, not a diagnosis
OBS offers Dynamically change bitrate to manage congestion (Beta). It lowers bitrate when the connection cannot keep up, which may help preserve a connection, but OBS says it does not fix the underlying cause and can reduce video quality.

Jitter, latency, and packet loss are useful context, but neither the cited OBS nor YouTube guidance establishes a universal jitter threshold that predicts dropped frames. Interpret those readings alongside sustained upload throughput and the OBS log. Results from mobile-network drive tests cannot diagnose an individual fixed-broadband line, its router, plan, location, or route to YouTube’s ingest server.

TRAI’s 2025 Kolkata independent drive-test report shows variation among sampled locations: its overall BSNL data-performance summary reports 74.75 ms jitter and 18.56% packet loss, while a separate sampled site reports 5.54 ms jitter and 3.60% packet loss. These are sampled mobile-network results, not a current measurement of your broadband connection. The TRAI Kolkata report does not support a conclusion that BSNL broadband is inherently unstable.
The 2025 TRAI Uttar Pradesh East report also varies by site. At Government Polytechnic Unnao, sampled BSNL mobile service recorded 5.27 Mbps average upload throughput, 7.03 ms jitter, and 0.30% packet loss. At Kanpur Airport, the report lists 10.39 Mbps upload throughput and 100% packet loss for BSNL, with failed YouTube and ping tests noted for the relevant table. These sample results do not establish performance on an individual subscriber’s broadband line. See the TRAI Uttar Pradesh East report.
When to contact BSNL
If network drops persist after wired testing, bitrate reduction, and the relevant OBS checks, send BSNL evidence tied to the affected sessions. OBS recommends contacting the ISP with details when its troubleshooting steps do not resolve connection issues.
- Dates and exact times when drops occurred.
- The OBS log and the network-dropped-frame percentage.
- Your configured stream bitrate and upload measurements taken during or near the issue.
- Whether Ethernet performed differently from Wi-Fi.
- Whether another ingest server or service changed the outcome.
