How to Stream a YouTube Live Property Tour Loop From a Synology NAS

A Synology NAS can store a tour video, but a separate encoder must loop and send it to YouTube Live. Learn what to verify before relying on a continuous stream.

You can use a Synology NAS to store a property-tour video, then have an encoder read that file and send a repeating live feed to YouTube. The NAS’s documented Surveillance Station Live Broadcast feature sends a camera stream; it does not establish a way to loop a prerecorded video. For a file-based loop, you need an encoder that specifically supports repeat playback from a local or network location and YouTube Live output. The official guidance available here does not verify a particular Synology model, app, or container as a reliable solution, so check compatibility before depending on it for continuous streaming.

What you need for a prerecorded property-tour loop

The workflow has three distinct parts: the video file, the encoder that plays it repeatedly, and YouTube Live, which receives the encoder’s feed. A NAS can store the video and make it available over the network, but storage alone does not play and broadcast it.

  • A tour video: Choose the finished recording and confirm its resolution, frame rate, video codec, audio, and duration.
  • An encoder with file-loop playback: Confirm that the chosen software or device can repeat a prerecorded file from a NAS share or compatible local storage and send it to YouTube Live. Do not assume that a camera-broadcast feature can do this.
  • A YouTube channel enabled for live streaming: YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain eligibility and setup.
  • A stable upload connection: The encoder sends the live stream over your internet connection. Check sustained upload capacity, not just the nominal speed shown by your internet plan.

Choose where the encoder will run

Use a separate computer to read the NAS file

A computer on the same network can access a tour video stored on a NAS share, if the encoder you choose supports network-hosted files and looping. This separates file storage from video playback and streaming. It is a plausible arrangement, not a configuration validated for a specific application here: verify the encoder’s supported file locations and behavior when a network share disconnects.

Consider a compatible NAS container only after checking the model

A container-based encoder may be an option on some Synology systems, but Synology’s Container Manager is available only on listed models. Check your exact NAS model and DSM version against Synology’s compatibility information before planning around it: Synology Container Manager. Model support by itself does not confirm that a particular container can loop your file, handle its audio and video formats, or recover from interruptions.

Do not confuse camera broadcast with prerecorded-file playback

Synology documents Surveillance Station Live Broadcast as a way to select and send a camera stream to YouTube. That source selection does not establish prerecorded-file looping. See Synology’s Live Broadcast feature for the camera-oriented workflow.

Configure YouTube Live and the encoder

  1. Confirm live-stream eligibility. Verify the channel and check that it has no live-streaming restriction within the previous 90 days. If live streaming has not been enabled before, allow up to 24 hours for activation.
  2. Create or select a live stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Open the stream’s encoder settings and obtain the stream URL and stream key. YouTube’s instructions are at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
  3. Keep the stream key private. Treat it like a password: enter it only in your encoder’s stream settings, do not publish or share it, and reset it if you believe it has been exposed.
  4. Choose the protocol and encoder settings supported by your setup. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Its encoder recommendations list H.264, H.265, and AV1, but usable choices depend on the encoder and workflow. Match the codec, resolution, and frame rate to the relevant YouTube guidance rather than copying a bitrate value from a different mode: YouTube encoder settings and YouTube RTMPS guidance.
  5. Set bitrate for the actual output mode. YouTube recommends 10 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p30. This is a recommendation for that specific codec and mode, not a universal minimum or a rule for other resolutions, frame rates, or codecs. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend upload bandwidth headroom of 20% above the stream bitrate. Check the encoder recommendations for the mode you intend to use and YouTube’s streaming tips for network guidance.
  6. Enable repeat playback in the encoder. Select the tour file and the encoder’s loop or repeat option. Confirm the option means continuous replay of the file, not merely reconnecting to a stream after a disconnection. The exact control depends on the encoder application; no specific application or setting path is verified here.
  7. Check the NAS file path and access. If the encoder runs on another computer, make sure it can read the file from the NAS share and that its account retains permission for the full stream. Test what happens if the share briefly becomes unavailable.
  8. Preview and test before going public. Use an unlisted or otherwise appropriate test stream. Check picture and audio, the transition from the end of the tour back to the start, YouTube’s preview and stream-health indicators, and whether the encoder recovers after a network or application interruption. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health.

Plan for continuous operation and archives

A property-tour loop intended to run continuously needs more than a successful initial connection. Decide how the encoder will restart after a computer reboot, application crash, NAS-share interruption, or internet outage; then test the recovery behavior rather than assuming the loop resumes correctly. Keep an eye on the YouTube stream-health display while establishing the setup.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a longer-running loop will be saved as one complete archive: verify the archive behavior you need and plan for separate recordings if continuity matters.

Troubleshooting a NAS-based loop

Symptom Likely cause What to check
YouTube does not receive a feed Live streaming is not enabled, or the encoder has an incorrect stream URL or key. Check channel eligibility and activation, then compare the encoder values with the current stream settings in Live Control Room. Reset the key if it may have been exposed.
The video plays once and stops The encoder is not set to repeat the file, or its playback mode does not support looping. Confirm the encoder explicitly supports repeat playback for a file on a network share, then test the end-to-start transition.
The encoder cannot open the tour file The file path, NAS permissions, share availability, or media format is incompatible with the encoder. Confirm the encoder can access the share with the configured account and supports the file’s video and audio formats. Test with the intended file before scheduling a long stream.
Playback stutters or YouTube reports stream issues The upload connection may lack sustained capacity or headroom; the encoder may also be overloaded. Compare the chosen bitrate with YouTube’s guidance for the exact codec, resolution, and frame rate. Check sustained upload capacity and retain the 20% upload headroom recommended in YouTube’s streaming tips.
The stream ends after a restart or interruption The encoder may not restart automatically, may lose access to the NAS share, or may not reconnect to YouTube. Test reboot, disconnection, and recovery behavior in advance. Confirm the encoder’s restart and reconnection options rather than assuming the NAS restores the live feed.
