If your YouTube live stream freezes when FFmpeg moves to a playlist video with different dimensions, investigate an output-format transition first—but do not assume resolution alone is the cause. Check whether FFmpeg is stream-copying, compare the media and timestamps at the transition, and review YouTube’s stream-health messages. A useful first test is to scale and re-encode every item to one consistent output format, then run a test stream before the event.
Why a resolution change can coincide with a freeze
A playlist boundary can change more than width and height. The next file may also differ in codec configuration, frame rate, pixel format, audio layout, or timestamps. A freeze at that moment makes a transition problem plausible, but does not prove YouTube caused it or identify the exact fault.
FFmpeg’s stream-copy mode passes packets without decoding, filtering, or encoding. It therefore cannot apply scaling to normalize inputs. FFmpeg documents output frame sizing as inserting the scale filter; when playlist items have different dimensions, test a filtered and re-encoded output instead of expecting stream copy to make them match. See the FFmpeg documentation.
Diagnose the transition before changing settings
- Identify the ingest protocol. Check whether FFmpeg sends RTMP/RTMPS or HLS. HLS has segment and playlist requirements that do not apply to an RTMP diagnosis; YouTube describes the two ingest methods in its ingestion protocol comparison.
- Save the exact command and logs. Capture FFmpeg’s full command, version/build, and log lines immediately before and after the freeze. Do not infer the command or error from the symptom alone.
- Compare each playlist item’s stream properties. Inspect input and output dimensions, codec/profile and pixel format where reported, frame rate, timestamps, and audio stream layout and sample rate. Note decoder, filter, encoder, or muxer warnings at the boundary.
- Check for stream copy. Look for
-c:v copyor an equivalent setting. If video is copied and source dimensions vary, try a filter-and-encode path with one chosen output size. - Match the YouTube configuration to the outgoing stream. In Live Control Room, check whether resolution and frame rate are automatic or manually selected. YouTube Help recommends automatic detection by default: “By default (recommended), YouTube will automatically detect your resolution and frame rate.” If you set them manually, make sure they match what FFmpeg actually sends. The Live Streaming API also requires resolution and frame-rate detection settings to be configured together: both must be
variablefor automatic detection. - Correlate the freeze with YouTube’s status. Compare its timestamp with FFmpeg’s log and the stream-health messages in Live Control Room. API stream status fields such as active, error, inactive, and ready can help distinguish a running FFmpeg process from a stream YouTube is receiving and accepting.
Test a stable output format
For a diagnostic test, choose an output size and frame rate suitable for the material and keep them stable across every playlist item. Use a filter-and-encode workflow that scales each input to those dimensions; do not rely on -c:v copy to resize. FFmpeg’s -s option inserts a scale filter at the end of the filtergraph, though a deliberate filter chain is preferable when you need to control scaling behavior and pixel format.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Where possible, keep codec configuration, audio layout and sample rate, timestamps, and GOP/keyframe cadence consistent at transitions too. This is a troubleshooting recommendation based on the ingest settings—not a claim that YouTube categorically rejects every midstream change. A fixed-size transcode is a test, not proof that resolution was the original cause.
RTMP/RTMPS settings to check
YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265, and AV1, supports up to 60 fps, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Select bitrate for the codec, resolution, and frame rate actually being sent; the recommendations differ by mode. For example, YouTube lists H.264 at 10 Mbps for 1080p30 and 12 Mbps for 1080p60. Check the current YouTube encoder settings and bitrate table for your exact mode. These figures are recommendations, not a guarantee that a stream will be healthy.

If the ingest is HLS
Do not apply RTMP assumptions to HLS. YouTube’s HLS guidance calls for 1–4 second MPEG-TS segments, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT requests, and no byte ranges. HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it sends segments rather than one continuous stream. Follow the complete YouTube HLS ingest requirements if FFmpeg is using that protocol.
Run a test stream and read the result
Before relying on the playlist for an event, test it with representative sound and moving video. YouTube explicitly recommends testing with representative audio and motion, then monitoring stream health and messages during the broadcast. Include the transition that previously coincided with the freeze; testing only one file will not exercise the boundary.

- If the freeze disappears after scaling and re-encoding to a stable output, the processing path or changing stream properties are worth investigating further.
- If it persists, compare the timestamp with both FFmpeg and YouTube messages rather than repeatedly changing resolution settings without evidence.
- If fixed-size output and matching ingest configuration do not resolve it, investigate other possibilities guided by the logs: discontinuous timestamps, malformed media, a connection interruption, encoder overload, or an audio/video stream change.
A definitive diagnosis requires the full FFmpeg command, FFmpeg version/build, playlist files’ stream metadata, ingest protocol, stream-key settings, logs around the freeze, and YouTube’s stream-health messages. The symptom alone does not establish a single documented YouTube bug.
