To stream nature footage at 4K and 60 frames per second around the clock, configure an encoder for 3840×2160 progressive video at 60 fps, use YouTube’s recommended bitrate for your chosen codec, and keep the source, encoder, power, network and stream session running. For YouTube’s English encoder-settings page, the H.264 recommendation for 2160p60 is 35 Mbps; YouTube also recommends constant bitrate, a two-second keyframe interval and 20% upload headroom. These settings help you build a continuous broadcast, but they do not guarantee uninterrupted service.
What you need for a 24/7 4K60 nature stream
Every part of the chain has to keep working: the video source must continue playing, the encoder must produce the feed, the internet connection must sustain the upload, and YouTube must keep the live session active. A local setup means keeping your playback and encoding computer powered and connected. A cloud service can handle the continuous playback and encoding remotely, but you still need to check its current limits, cost and recovery behavior.
- A suitable source: footage that is genuinely 4K at 60 fps if you want the stream to preserve that resolution and frame rate. An encoder cannot create real source detail or motion that is absent from the original.
- An encoder: software on a computer or standalone hardware that can send a live feed to YouTube. For prerecorded footage, it must loop or otherwise continue supplying video.
- Sustained upstream capacity: measured upload bandwidth with enough headroom for the selected video bitrate, audio and network overhead.
- A YouTube live setup: live streaming enabled, a scheduled stream or Live Control Room session, and a private stream key entered in your encoder.
- Monitoring and recovery: a way to notice feed or connection problems and restore the stream. “24/7” describes the operating goal, not a guarantee that no interruption will occur.
YouTube’s encoder guide describes computer and standalone hardware encoders and gives a cloud service as an example for continuous prerecorded video. That example is not an endorsement or proof of a provider’s current availability or limits. YouTube’s cited guidance does not establish a maximum runtime policy or promise indefinite uptime for this workflow.
Configure YouTube and the encoder in order
1. Enable live streaming and create the broadcast
- Enable live streaming for the YouTube channel and allow for initial activation. YouTube says first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide.
- In YouTube Studio, create a scheduled stream or open the Live Control Room to set up the broadcast. You can use scheduled streams and reusable settings where available. See YouTube’s live stream settings guide.
- Choose an encoder that can output 4K60 and keep prerecorded footage playing continuously. Confirm its current compatibility with YouTube’s supported ingest codecs and settings.
2. Set resolution, frame rate and codec
Set the video output to 3840×2160 progressive (2160p) at 60 fps. The source, encoder and YouTube ingest all need to support the intended format. YouTube’s encoder-settings page lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 for live video; availability depends on the encoder and current ingest support. H.264 is a straightforward option when compatibility is the priority.

YouTube’s English settings page lists 35 Mbps for H.264 at 2160p60. The same returned page gives an AV1/H.265 recommended range of 10–40 Mbps. YouTube’s recommended values can vary by codec and the active page or locale; another localized result showed a different H.264 figure. Check the current table for your codec in YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance before going live. These are live-encoder recommendations, not the higher bitrate recommendations for uploading a finished 4K60 video.
3. Set rate control and keyframes
- Rate control: choose constant bitrate (CBR), as YouTube recommends.
- Keyframe interval: set two seconds. YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
- Audio: configure a supported audio format in the encoder and include its bitrate when estimating the total upload load. The cited guidance does not specify one universal audio bitrate for every encoder setup.
For a 60 fps output, a two-second keyframe interval corresponds to a keyframe every 120 frames. If your encoder expresses the setting in seconds, enter two seconds; if it uses frames, use the equivalent for the configured frame rate.

4. Use RTMPS and protect the stream key
When your encoder supports it, select RTMPS for ingest. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL and recommends it for encrypted transmission to its servers. See YouTube’s RTMPS guide.
- In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key for the intended broadcast.
- Paste them into the matching server/URL and key fields in the encoder. Field names differ between encoders.
- Keep the stream key private: it functions like a password that authorizes an encoder to send video to your channel. Do not publish it or share it in a screenshot.
- Use auto-start or auto-stop only if you want the encoder to control those actions and the options are enabled for the stream. Check the Live Control Room after connecting.
For the precise controls, see YouTube’s guide to managing live stream settings.

Check upload bandwidth and stream health
YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the total stream bitrate, including a backup bitrate where relevant. Treat this as a margin to plan for, not a guarantee that a shared or unstable connection will support a continuous stream. A speed test should reflect upstream capacity under the conditions in which you plan to broadcast; the ISP plan’s advertised download speed does not answer that question. Other people and devices sharing the connection can reduce the bandwidth available to the encoder. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
For illustration, a 35 Mbps H.264 video target alone implies more than 35 Mbps of dependable upload capacity once you allow YouTube’s 20% headroom; audio and network overhead also need room. This is an arithmetic implication of YouTube’s bitrate and headroom guidance, not a YouTube-published minimum ISP tier. If your connection cannot sustain the target reliably, lower the target or use a different connection or hosting workflow rather than assuming 4K60 will stay live.

Keep prerecorded nature footage running
With a local encoder
Load the nature video or playlist in a playback workflow that can repeat it, then send that continuous output through your encoder. The playback process, encoder, computer, network connection and power all need to remain available. Plan how you will notice a frozen player, encoder failure, internet outage or ended YouTube session, and how you will restart the feed. No particular computer, GPU, router, cable or UPS is established as universally required; the machine has to be capable of the chosen 4K60 workflow and dependable in your circumstances.
Choosing local or cloud operation
Before relying on either route, compare whether you already have a machine capable of 4K60 encoding, whether it can stay powered and connected, how you will detect a dropped feed, and the provider’s current runtime, bitrate limits and costs. A cloud workflow removes the need to leave your own computer running for the stream, but service terms and limits still matter. A 24/7 configuration is an operating plan that needs monitoring and a recovery path, not a promise of uninterrupted transmission.

Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive a signal | Live streaming is not enabled, the encoder has not connected, or the stream URL or key is wrong. | Allow time for first-time activation; verify the URL and private key in YouTube Studio and the encoder, then check the Live Control Room. |
| Stream health reports instability | Upload capacity is insufficient or fluctuates under network load. | Test upstream speed under realistic load, account for audio and overhead plus the recommended headroom, and reduce the bitrate or change the connection if needed. |
| 4K60 will not start or is not available | The source, encoder or ingest path may not support the selected resolution, frame rate or codec. | Confirm the source is 4K60, set 3840×2160 progressive at 60 fps, and check the current YouTube bitrate and codec guidance for the encoder you use. |
| Feed stops when left unattended | The local player, encoder, computer, power, network or YouTube session stopped. | Identify which part of the chain failed, restore it, and test your monitoring and restart procedure before relying on a continuous broadcast. |
| Encoder does not connect securely | RTMPS may not be configured or supported by the encoder. | Check the encoder’s ingest protocol options and use RTMPS when supported; consult YouTube’s RTMPS instructions. |
Copyright, reused footage and channel rules
Technical compliance does not establish that you have the right to broadcast a nature video. Use footage and audio that you own or are licensed to stream on YouTube, and retain permission records where applicable. A video being available online does not by itself grant permission to rebroadcast it. Review YouTube’s current copyright and monetization policies for your channel and material before starting a long-running stream. The encoder setup guidance cited here does not settle whether a particular reused-footage stream qualifies for monetization, and no claim about eligibility should be inferred from the technical settings.
Questions readers often ask
Can I upscale 1080p footage to make it true 4K?
No. An encoder can output a 4K frame size, but upscaling does not restore detail absent from the source.
Does a successful test prove the stream will run indefinitely?
No. It shows how the setup behaved during that test; continuing operation still depends on the source, equipment or service, network and YouTube session.
