YouTube Live Dropping Frames? Diagnose High Bitrate and Fix OBS

If OBS drops frames when streaming to YouTube, first find out whether the cause is network capacity, rendering lag, encoding overload, or a settings warning. Then test the right fix.

If OBS’s network dropped frames counter rises, your upload connection may not be sustaining the configured bitrate. Lower the video bitrate and test again—but first check that the warning is actually about network drops. Rendering lag and encoding overload have different causes and usually need different fixes.

First identify which frames are being lost

In OBS, check the Stats window while streaming and note which counter or warning is changing. “Dropped frames” caused by a connection problem is not the same as frames missed because the computer cannot render or encode the scene.

What you see Likely issue First response
Network dropped frames are increasing The connection to the YouTube ingest server is unstable or cannot sustain the set bitrate. Lower the video bitrate and test; check upload stability and connection conditions.
Rendering lag or frames missed due to rendering lag The GPU is struggling to render and composite the scene, often while a game or other workload competes for resources. Reduce GPU workload, simplify the scene, or lower output resolution or frame rate.
Encoding overloaded The encoder or system workload cannot encode frames fast enough. Reduce output demands and other system workload; do not assume a lower network bitrate alone will fix it.
YouTube reports an incorrect bitrate The encoder settings may not match the selected codec, resolution, or frame rate, or available bandwidth may be insufficient. Read the exact Live Control Room warning and verify settings against YouTube’s current encoder guidance.

OBS defines dropped frames as a connection to the remote server that is unstable or unable to keep up with the configured bitrate. Its separate performance guidance covers rendering and encoding workload. See OBS connection troubleshooting and OBS encoding performance troubleshooting.

Choose a bitrate for both YouTube and your connection

There is no single best YouTube Live bitrate independent of codec, resolution, frame rate, and upload capacity. YouTube’s encoder settings list recommended video bitrates by those settings. For H.264, examples include 8 Mbps for 720p at 60 fps, 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps, 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps, and 50 Mbps for 4K at 60 fps. YouTube lists different values for AV1 and H.265. These are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee that your particular connection can sustain them. Check the current table at YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance; the retrieved Help page does not state a publication year for the figures.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

OBS’s connection guide, dated 2024-09-30, suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for bitrate. Treat this as a troubleshooting heuristic, not a YouTube requirement or a universal safe threshold. Use stable upload capacity—not just a one-off speed-test result—as the practical constraint. Other devices and applications sharing the connection can affect what remains available to the stream.

YouTube recommends testing upload speed, selecting a quality that produces a reliable stream, and running a test with representative sound and motion while monitoring stream health. A static screen is not a useful stand-in for a high-motion game with live audio.

Fix rising network dropped frames in OBS

  1. Run a representative test stream. Use the resolution, frame rate, audio, scenes, and gameplay you expect to use. Watch the OBS network dropped-frames count and YouTube’s stream health.
  2. Lower the video bitrate. Change the bitrate in OBS’s output/stream settings, then test again. If the count stops rising, the previous bitrate or connection conditions were not sustainable. OBS suggests the 75%-of-upload-speed starting point described above.
  3. Try another ingest server, if available. A different route to the ingest server may behave better. Test it rather than assuming the nearest or default option is best.
  4. If you use Wi-Fi, test with Ethernet. OBS recommends a wired connection for Wi-Fi users. A cable is a diagnostic, not a guaranteed fix: it cannot resolve an ISP, routing, or YouTube ingest-server problem. Restarting the router or modem may help with a temporary connection issue; if you suspect faulty hardware, OBS advises contacting your ISP before replacing equipment.
  5. Check software that can interfere with the stream connection. OBS lists VPNs, security software, bundled network utilities that may deprioritize OBS, and outdated network drivers among possible connection issues. Test changes one at a time so you can identify what affects the result.
  6. Contact your ISP if the connection remains unstable. If lower bitrate, a different server, and local connection checks do not resolve the drops, ask your ISP to investigate the connection or route.

OBS also offers Dynamically change bitrate to manage congestion (Beta). It can lower bitrate when the connection cannot keep up, but it does not fix the underlying cause and may reduce video quality. Use it as a fallback, not a replacement for diagnosing unstable upload or an unsuitable bitrate. See OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide.

When YouTube says the bitrate is incorrect

Read the exact message in YouTube Live Control Room before changing settings. Verify that the encoder’s codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe settings match the mode you selected. YouTube notes that if bandwidth is insufficient for the chosen resolution, you should consider lowering the resolution; its encoder guidance also links frame rate and keyframe frequency. An incorrect-bitrate warning is not, by itself, proof of local network congestion. Consult YouTube’s live-streaming error messages and the encoder settings guide.

Fix rendering lag or encoding overload

If network dropped frames are not rising but OBS reports rendering lag or encoding overload, focus on the computer’s workload rather than treating the upload bitrate as the cause.

  • Cap the game’s frame rate so it does not consume all available GPU resources.
  • Reduce output resolution or frame rate, then test again.
  • Simplify scenes and reduce demanding sources or filters.
  • Check whether other GPU-heavy work is competing with OBS.

OBS explains that the GPU renders and composites scenes, and that games, complex scenes, and other GPU work can compete for resources. Its encoding performance troubleshooting guide covers these adjustments.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a higher bitrate always mean fewer dropped frames?

No. A bitrate that exceeds stable upload capacity can cause network drops; choosing a higher bitrate does not make the connection more capable.
