A cloud server can run an encoder that sends a video feed to YouTube as a live stream, including a replay channel that loops recorded content. That is different from YouTube’s own replay feature, which archives a completed live event for later viewing. YouTube documents the ingest and archive workflows, but does not prescribe a cloud provider or provide a turnkey continuous-replay service.
First, decide whether you need a live feed or an archived replay
A replay channel that appears live needs an encoder to transmit video to YouTube continuously. YouTube describes a live stream as a video feed sent to the service; after a broadcast is completed and converted, it can also become a video on the channel. Those are related but distinct workflows. YouTube Live Streaming API: streams
- Use an encoder for continuous replay: the encoder sends the recorded content as a live feed. The encoder may run on a cloud server, though YouTube does not endorse a particular cloud setup.
- Use YouTube’s archive for a past event: YouTube can automatically archive a completed live stream, making it available as a video. This does not keep a channel live after the event ends.
What YouTube archives automatically
YouTube Help says it can automatically archive a live stream that is less than 12 hours long. Streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured, so do not rely on the automatic archive alone for a longer event. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive as a backup. The page does not state when this guidance was published. YouTube Help: Archive live streams
This 12-hour guidance concerns archiving a completed broadcast. It is not a stated maximum duration for running an encoder or a guarantee that a continuous replay will be archived. If you need a lasting copy, record or retain a separate source file rather than depending solely on YouTube’s archive.

How a cloud-hosted encoder sends a replay to YouTube
The basic setup follows YouTube’s documented encoder workflow: create or schedule the live event in YouTube, copy its stream URL and stream key into the encoder, then start the encoder. Running that encoder on a cloud server instead of a home computer is a technical implementation choice; YouTube’s documentation does not specify a cloud provider, operating system, encoder package, server size, or uptime guarantee. YouTube Help: Set up your encoder for live streaming
- Create the live event in YouTube Studio. Set up the stream and choose the event details appropriate to your channel and audience.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder instructions identify these as the settings to enter in your encoder.
- Configure an encoder on the cloud server. Point it at YouTube’s stream URL and enter the key. Choose a server and encoder capable of handling the video workload, but note that YouTube’s cited setup guidance does not prescribe particular specifications.
- Start the encoder and check YouTube’s preview. Confirm that YouTube receives the feed before beginning the broadcast.
- Keep the source and recovery plan available. A cloud server removes the need to leave a home computer running, but it does not by itself establish that the server, encoder, or internet connection will never fail.
Protect the stream key as you would a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your event. If you believe it has been exposed, replace or reset it through the relevant YouTube stream settings and update the encoder.

For immediate playback after a one-off event
If your goal is for viewers to watch a completed event immediately afterward, rather than to keep a continuous live channel running, the YouTube Live Streaming API’s broadcast settings matter. Its documentation says to enable DVR and archiving, and to enable recording from the start. These options need to be set before the broadcast goes live because the relevant properties cannot be changed while the broadcast is in testing or live state. YouTube Live Streaming API: broadcasts YouTube Live Streaming API: broadcast lifecycle
The API reference also warns that when recording is enabled but DVR is not, archive availability may be delayed by around one day. That is a different configuration from enabling both for immediate playback; check the settings before going live rather than expecting to change them afterward.

Rights apply to live feeds and archived replays
You need the necessary rights for all content you send, both while it is live and in the resulting archive. YouTube’s live-stream terms include applicable music rights. A recording being available to you, or being playable on your own device, does not by itself establish that you may rebroadcast it. YouTube Terms of Service
Choosing between an archive and a continuously running encoder
| Need | Approach | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Let viewers watch a past event after it ends | YouTube’s automatic archive | Automatic archiving is described for streams under 12 hours; longer streams may not be captured. |
| Keep sending recorded material as a live feed | An encoder that repeatedly sends the content to YouTube | YouTube documents the encoder workflow, not a turnkey cloud replay service or a particular hosting recipe. |
| Make a completed event available immediately afterward | Configure the API-managed broadcast with DVR and archive enabled, and recording from the start | Set the relevant options before going live; the API warns of an around-one-day delay when recording is enabled but DVR is not. |
Or let it run in the cloud
For a YouTube channel that loops uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it does not re-encode or use quality tiers. It also attempts automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
