For a standard YouTube RTMP or RTMPS broadcast, use the current Stream URL from YouTube Live Control Room as your encoder’s server address, then enter the matching stream key in the encoder’s key field. Prefer the RTMPS URL when your encoder supports it. YouTube’s explicit instructions for copying both a primary and a Backup server URL apply to HLS ingestion; a second URL by itself does not configure or prove encoder failover.
Which URL goes in the encoder?
For a normal RTMP or RTMPS setup, copy the Stream URL for the stream you are about to run from YouTube Live Control Room. Put it in the encoder’s server or ingest URL field, and put the associated stream key in the separate stream key field. If the encoder has a YouTube preset, you can use it, but make sure it is using the current stream’s details.
Scheduled streams use the same general connection steps. Do not reuse a URL copied from an unrelated stream: take the address and key from the Live Control Room stream you intend to broadcast.
RTMP, RTMPS, and HLS: how the choices differ

Prefer RTMPS when the encoder supports it
YouTube recommends RTMPS. In Live Control Room, open the stream’s Stream tab or the scheduled stream, then use the lock control in Stream settings to reveal the RTMPS URL. Copy the address shown there rather than constructing or adapting one from an example. YouTube’s guidance for SSL or timeout issues is to use rtmps for both the protocol and server; port 443 may be needed depending on the encoder.

Use the HLS Backup server URL only for an HLS workflow
For HLS, select or create a stream key that uses the HLS protocol. Copy the resulting HTTPS Stream URL into the encoder. If you need backup ingestion, YouTube says to copy the displayed Backup server URL as well. The HLS key is part of the URL, so it is not entered separately.
HLS sends segments rather than a continuous stream and has higher latency than RTMP. YouTube’s HLS setup guidance specifies TS segments of 1–4 seconds along with other encoder-dependent settings. Use the encoder’s HLS configuration and YouTube’s current instructions; do not paste an HLS backup address into a field intended for an RTMP backup destination.

A backup URL is not the same as backup encoder failover
A primary and backup ingest destination are only part of a resilient setup. The encoder workflow must actually send a backup feed in a way YouTube and the encoder support. YouTube’s guidance for testing encoder failover is to stop the primary encoder or disconnect its Ethernet cable, then confirm that playback rolls over to the backup encoder. A second URL alone is not evidence that this behavior is configured.
Test before the event
- Configure the primary encoder with the current stream details and configure the backup encoder or ingest workflow separately.
- Start a test stream early enough to inspect the YouTube preview and stream health.
- Check audio, video, and playback from a viewer’s perspective.
- Stop the primary encoder or unplug its Ethernet connection, as YouTube recommends for a failover test.
- Confirm that playback moves to the backup encoder, then restore the primary setup and resolve any gaps before the event.
Allow for the bandwidth of both feeds
YouTube recommends planning upload capacity for primary bitrate + backup bitrate + 20%. This is a headroom recommendation, not a measurement of any particular venue or connection. Check that the available upload capacity can sustain both feeds at their configured bitrates, especially if other devices or services share the connection.

Encoder settings that can affect compatibility
For the RTMP/RTMPS settings listed by YouTube, supported video codecs include H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1; frame rates can be up to 60 fps; audio can use AAC or MP3; and the rate control should be CBR. YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and sets a 4-second maximum for those listed settings. These encoder values do not change which Stream URL you should copy.
YouTube recommends HLS for HDR or capabilities not supported by RTMP(S). Confirm your encoder’s supported protocols and settings before choosing HLS, and account for its higher latency if timing matters to the production.

Troubleshooting URL and failover problems
- The encoder will not connect: Re-copy the current stream’s URL and key from Live Control Room. Check that the protocol selected in the encoder matches the address, including RTMP versus RTMPS. For SSL or timeout problems with RTMPS, YouTube says to use
rtmpsfor the protocol and server; port 443 may be needed. - The URL connects but the stream does not appear as expected: Confirm that the stream key belongs to the same current stream as the URL, and review YouTube’s preview and stream health indicators.
- HLS backup does not work with the encoder: Verify that the encoder supports HLS and accepts YouTube’s displayed primary and backup destinations. YouTube’s HLS URL and embedded-key instructions are specific to HLS; they are not universal RTMP instructions.
- Failover test drops playback: The backup encoder or feed may not be configured to take over, or the workflow may not be supported as set up. Check encoder configuration and network capacity, then repeat the test before relying on it during a live event.
- Video or audio is incompatible: Check codec, CBR rate control, audio codec, frame rate, and keyframe interval against YouTube’s listed RTMP/RTMPS settings.
