Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →If an OBS profile replacement removed your YouTube stream settings, first check whether the old OBS profile or a JSON backup still exists. If not, open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and copy the current stream key into OBS. Reset the key only if you want a new one or suspect the old one was exposed; then update OBS with the newly generated key before streaming.
What was lost—and what was not
A stream key is an encoder credential, not your video, scenes, or channel. Replacing an OBS profile can leave the active profile without the earlier streaming configuration, but it does not by itself erase the key managed by YouTube. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings
OBS stores Stream, Video, and Output settings in profiles. Scenes are stored separately in Scene Collections, so restoring a profile is not the same as restoring your scenes. OBS Project: Profiles
First, check whether OBS can recover the old settings
- Check the Profile menu. In OBS, open Profile and see whether the profile you used before the replacement is still listed. Select it, then open Settings > Stream and check whether the YouTube connection or stream key is present.
- Import a profile backup if you have one. OBS profiles can be exported and imported as JSON. Use the profile import option in OBS to load the backup, then inspect Settings > Stream. Menu labels can vary by OBS version, so check the installed version’s Profile menu if they differ from these instructions. OBS Project: Profiles
- Keep scenes in mind. A profile import restores profile settings, not the separate Scene Collection. If scenes are also missing, look for a Scene Collection backup or existing collection separately.
If no previous profile or JSON backup is available, restore the credential from YouTube Studio instead.

Find the current YouTube stream key and restore OBS
- Open YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live, then choose Stream in Live Control Room.
- Reveal or copy the current stream key there. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains how to select YouTube in an encoder or enter the Stream URL and key. YouTube Help: Stream using an encoder
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream. If your setup uses a manually entered key, select YouTube as the service if needed and paste the current key into the stream key field. Check that the service and server/URL are correct for your setup.
- If OBS used YouTube account connection rather than a manually entered key, check the connected account in Settings > Stream and reconnect it if necessary. OBS profiles can include connected-account information. OBS Project: Profiles
- Apply the settings, start the encoder, and wait for the Live Control Room preview to appear before starting the YouTube broadcast. If startup fails, YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance directs creators to copy the key from Live Control Room into their encoder. YouTube Help: Troubleshoot live stream issues
Copy the existing key or reset it?
| Choice | When it fits | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Copy the current key | You only lost the OBS setting and want to keep using the existing YouTube credential. | Copy it from Live Control Room and paste it into OBS. |
| Reset the key | You want a new credential, or the old key may have been exposed. | Select Reset beside the hidden key in Live Control Room, then copy the newly generated key into OBS before trying to stream. |
Reset creates a new key; an encoder still configured with the previous key will not be updated automatically. YouTube says only a channel owner or manager can reset a key. If you are an editor or viewer, ask an authorized owner or manager to do it. YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings
If the stream still will not start
- YouTube does not receive the encoder signal: confirm the selected YouTube service and server/URL, then verify that OBS has the current key—not an older key invalidated by a reset.
- The key field is empty after switching profiles: check the other OBS profiles or import a JSON backup; otherwise copy the key from Live Control Room.
- You cannot reset the key: confirm that you are signed in with channel owner or manager permissions, or ask someone with those permissions.
- The stream appears in OBS but not as a preview in Live Control Room: make sure the encoder is started and give YouTube time to detect the signal; use YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting steps if it remains missing.
- Your scenes are still missing: look in OBS’s Scene Collection menu or recover a scene collection backup. Profile recovery does not restore scenes.
