YouTube Live Dropped Frames but Bitrate Is Stable: How to Diagnose It

A stable bitrate does not rule out frame loss. Identify the counter that is rising, then test the matching network, rendering, or encoding cause.

A steady network-bitrate reading does not rule out frame loss. First identify which counter is rising: in OBS, Dropped Frames (Network) points to the connection to YouTube, while Frames missed due to rendering lag and Skipped frames due to encoding lag point to separate computer workloads. Check that statistic before changing bitrate or other settings.

Why frames can drop while bitrate looks steady

Bitrate is a rate reading, not proof that every frame reached YouTube on time. A displayed average or current rate can look stable while the connection has intermittent trouble. YouTube notes that congestion and other factors can affect a live stream even when the network can sustain its average bitrate (YouTube Help: latency and live streaming). OBS describes network-dropped frames as a sign that the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate (OBS Project: Stream Connection Troubleshooting).

That explanation applies only when the network-drop counter is rising. In OBS, frame-loss statistics distinguish network drops from rendering lag and encoding lag; those are different failure points (OBS Studio interface and statistics). A stable upload bitrate cannot diagnose rendering or encoding performance.

Identify which counter is increasing

In OBS, open View > Stats and watch the counters during the problem. Record the OBS version, the exact counter label, and whether its value increases. If you use another encoder, find the equivalent statistic rather than assuming that its “dropped frames” label means the same thing.

Counter or symptom What it points to What to inspect first
Dropped Frames (Network) The outbound connection between the encoder and YouTube’s ingest server. Upload capacity, headroom, shared network use, and interruptions along the connection path.
Frames missed due to rendering lag The computer is not rendering or compositing frames in time. Local rendering workload and whether the encoder’s local output looks or sounds poor.
Skipped frames due to encoding lag The encoder is not encoding frames in time. Encoder errors and CPU load, along with the configured encoding workload.

Do not treat a network-drop count, rendering misses, and encoding skips as interchangeable. OBS’s connection troubleshooting guidance concerns network drops; YouTube recommends checking encoder errors and CPU load when the stream looks or sounds bad in the encoder (YouTube Help: troubleshoot live stream issues).

Follow a troubleshooting sequence

1. Compare the encoder with YouTube’s stream health

Monitor YouTube’s stream health and note any messages. Compare the live output with the encoder preview and, if available, a local recording. YouTube advises checking encoder errors and CPU load when the encoder’s output looks or sounds bad. If the encoder output is healthy, focus on the outbound connection instead (YouTube Help: troubleshoot live stream issues). A local recording can also help establish whether an audio or video defect exists before the stream reaches YouTube.

2. Check upload capacity and leave headroom

Measure upload capacity, not just download speed. YouTube recommends leaving about 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the stream’s bitrate. Its guidance also warns that a shared office network may limit an individual device and that a disruption in connectivity can break a stream (YouTube Help: network guidance for live streaming). A speed test is useful context, but a single result does not prove that the entire path to YouTube’s ingest server remains stable during your broadcast.

3. Look for interruptions during the actual stream

If Dropped Frames (Network) rises while the displayed bitrate seems normal, observe the connection during the broadcast and check whether other devices or services are sharing the upload capacity. Consider whether network software or hardware could be affecting traffic. OBS identifies connection instability and inability to sustain the configured bitrate as possible causes, but the counter alone does not identify a faulty router, cable, or ISP (OBS Project: Stream Connection Troubleshooting).

If it makes sense for your setup, testing a wired connection can help compare paths; it is a diagnostic option, not a guaranteed fix. A network issue may be elsewhere, and a wired connection will not resolve rendering or encoding lag.

4. Check codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate together

Compare your encoder settings with YouTube’s current recommendations for the specific codec, resolution, and frame rate you use. YouTube recommends CBR for RTMP/RTMPS streams, and its H.264 table lists 6 Mbps minimum and 17 Mbps recommended for 1080p60, and 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended for 1080p30 (YouTube Help: encoder settings and bitrate recommendations). These are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that your upload path can deliver the stream reliably.

Do not lower bitrate automatically just because a counter says “dropped frames.” First establish that the network counter is the one rising, then compare the configured bitrate with both YouTube’s guidance and your available upload capacity. For a different codec or output mode, use the matching row in YouTube’s current table rather than applying the H.264 examples to it.

5. Find out whether the issue affects only some viewers

If viewers report problems, compare reports from multiple people on different internet connections. YouTube says reports from many viewers may indicate an encoder issue, while a problem reported by one viewer may be local to that person (YouTube Help: troubleshoot live stream issues). Treat this as a clue, not a definitive diagnosis; compare it with stream health and encoder metrics.

6. Change one thing, then retest

Before changing settings, note the current counter values and configuration. Change one relevant setting or network condition at a time, then retest. YouTube recommends testing before going live with audio and movement similar to the actual event and monitoring stream health during the event (YouTube Help: streaming tips). A test that lacks the event’s typical motion or workload may not reveal the same problem.

Match the next action to the evidence

What you observe Next step
Network drops rise; local output is clean. Check upload headroom and connection stability during the stream, then review YouTube stream-health messages.
Rendering-lag misses rise. Investigate local rendering performance rather than treating the issue as an upload-rate problem.
Encoding-lag skips rise, or local audio/video is poor. Check encoder errors and CPU load; confirm the configured encoding workload.
Encoder looks healthy, but the stream or viewer reports show trouble. Check YouTube stream health and the outbound connection; compare reports from multiple viewers.
Only one viewer reports a problem. Consider that viewer’s local connection or playback setup, while checking the rest of the evidence.
