To keep using one YouTube stream key with an OBS video playlist, create a custom reusable key in YouTube Studio, enter YouTube’s stream URL and that key in OBS, then add your videos as a VLC Video playlist. Turn on Loop Playlist if it should repeat and leave Shuffle Playlist off for the files to play in order. The key can be reused; it does not, by itself, keep one live event or watch page running continuously.
What a persistent stream key does—and does not do
YouTube calls the reusable option a custom stream key. It lets an encoder such as OBS connect using the same key again; it is a credential, not a permanent live broadcast. Each stream still has its own event settings, metadata, privacy choice and watch page. You can also use YouTube’s Reuse settings when creating a new stream to copy settings and a key from a previous one. See YouTube’s Manage live stream settings.
A reusable key is useful when you regularly send an OBS feed to the same channel. It does not make OBS start automatically, preserve a single event indefinitely, or guarantee that a broadcast remains live after the encoder stops.
Create a reusable key in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and choose Create → Go Live to open Live Control Room. Select the Stream tab.
- In the stream key area, choose Create new stream key. Configure the available settings and create the custom key. YouTube says a custom key can be reused.
- Copy both the stream URL and the key. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it or share it with people who should not be able to send a feed to your channel.
- Set the stream’s title, privacy and other metadata in Live Control Room. YouTube offers public, private and unlisted privacy options. Its default differs by age group: private for ages 13–17 and public for ages 18 and older, so check the intended setting rather than assuming a default.
- If you want encoder signals to start or stop a broadcast, review YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop controls. These selections are copied when you choose Reuse settings.
YouTube’s encoder workflow describes creating or scheduling a stream, receiving the encoder preview and, for a scheduled stream, selecting Go live. The exact flow can depend on whether you are starting an immediate or scheduled broadcast. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Connect OBS to the YouTube key
- In OBS, open the streaming settings. If YouTube integration is available in your OBS setup, select YouTube and enter the key. Otherwise choose the option to use a custom server, put YouTube’s stream URL in the server field and paste the key into the Stream Key field.
- Save or apply the settings. Keep the key in OBS private; anyone with access to it may be able to send an encoder feed to your channel.
- Before going live, confirm that the intended stream or scheduled event is open in Live Control Room. A reusable key and the event’s title, privacy and watch page are separate settings.
YouTube’s encoder guide documents the server URL and stream-key fields, but it does not provide one universal OBS screen-by-screen walkthrough for every version and operating system. OBS labels and integration availability can therefore vary. Do not assume that entering a reusable key alone creates or selects the event you intend to broadcast.
Build the playlist in OBS
Install the matching VLC version
OBS’s basic Media Source plays an individual file. For a playlist, use VLC Video, which requires VLC to be installed. Match the application architecture: 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. If VLC Video is missing from the source menu, check the installation and architecture first. OBS documents the source and its playlist behavior in its Media Sources guide.

Add files and choose playback behavior
- In the OBS scene you plan to stream, add a VLC Video source.
- Add the video files to its playlist and arrange them in the order you want. The source supports a playlist, unlike the individual-file Media Source.
- For a fixed sequence, leave Shuffle Playlist off. Turn it on only if randomized playback is intended.
- Turn on Loop Playlist to restart playback after the final item. Leave it off if the playlist should stop at the end.
- Review Visibility Behaviour. This setting determines what happens to the VLC source when it is hidden; choose behavior that will not unintentionally pause or stop playback when you change scenes.
- Make sure the VLC Video source is visible in the active scene and check that the files play with the expected picture and sound.
OBS’s Sources Guide covers adding and managing sources in scenes. Menu details may vary by OBS version.
Start the stream and verify the broadcast
- Start streaming from OBS after the playlist source is ready in the active scene.
- Check Live Control Room for the incoming preview. For a scheduled stream, wait for the preview and select Go live when YouTube presents that step.
- Verify the actual broadcast’s privacy, title and event, then check video, audio, playlist order and whether the list repeats as intended.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived after the encoder stops sending content. That archive behavior is not a promise that a reusable key preserves one ongoing event or handles an uninterrupted broadcast automatically. See YouTube’s encoder instructions.

Protect or reset the key
YouTube describes stream keys as “your YouTube stream’s password and address.” If you believe a key has been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and replace the old value in OBS. YouTube says a channel owner or manager can reset a key; editors and viewers cannot. After resetting, the old key will no longer be the value OBS should use. Follow YouTube’s key-reset instructions.
Troubleshooting
- OBS shows no YouTube signal: verify the stream URL and key fields in OBS, then check that the active key in Live Control Room is the same one. If you reset a compromised key, replace the old value in OBS.
- VLC Video is not available: install VLC and ensure its architecture matches OBS. A 64-bit OBS installation needs 64-bit VLC.
- The playlist plays in the wrong order: turn off Shuffle Playlist and arrange the files in the desired sequence.
- The playlist stops after the last file: enable Loop Playlist if it should restart.
- Playback pauses or stops after changing scenes: check the VLC source’s Visibility Behaviour setting and select behavior suited to scene changes.
- The wrong event or privacy is showing: check the selected or scheduled stream and its privacy in Live Control Room. The reusable key is separate from event metadata and watch-page management.
- The encoder preview appears, but the stream is not live: check the Live Control Room flow for a pending confirmation, especially for a scheduled stream that requires selecting Go live.
