A YouTube stream health warning that appears after you restart an encoder is not, by itself, proof that the restart caused the problem. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, read the exact message beside the Health Indicator, and fix the condition it names. YouTube says an error remains visible while it is unresolved. The right fix may involve a stream setting, the encoder itself, or your outbound internet connection—not necessarily the stream key.
Start with the warning, not the restart
In Live Control Room, find the message next to the Health Indicator and note its timestamp. YouTube’s live-stream error guidance distinguishes among problems with format or codec, bitrate, audio, video, resolution, and keyframes. Those messages call for different corrections. YouTube Help says, “If the error isn’t fixed, it will continue to pop up.” That persistence means the warning is still being detected; it does not establish that restarting the encoder caused it.
- Red error: YouTube describes red errors as critical; they may prevent an event from starting or cause problems for viewers.
- Yellow error: YouTube describes yellow errors as moderate; they may reduce stream quality.
Use the current wording in Studio to choose the relevant branch below. Don’t change several unrelated settings at once: doing so can obscure which correction addressed the warning.
If the encoder will not start
First determine whether your encoder connects to YouTube with a stream key or signs in directly. The credential fix applies to the former, not automatically to every restart.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Third-party encoder using a stream key
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and copy the stream key for the intended stream.
- Paste that key into the encoder’s stream-key field, following the encoder’s own connection settings.
- Start the encoder and check whether the feed reaches Live Control Room.
YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting guidance recommends copying the key from Live Control Room and pasting it into the encoder when a third-party encoder reports an error starting. A stream key identifies the feed destination and acts as a credential: keep it private. An ordinary encoder restart alone is not a reason to reset or replace it.
Software that signs in to YouTube directly
If the software connects through direct YouTube sign-in rather than a stream key, YouTube directs users to the software provider for support. Don’t paste or rotate a key that this connection method does not use.

If the warning names an encoder setting
Match the correction to the warning text. YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance gives operational recommendations, not one universal bitrate for every stream.
| Setting or format | YouTube guidance | How to apply it |
|---|---|---|
| H.264, 1080p at 60 fps | Recommended bitrate: 17 Mbps | Use this row only if your stream uses this codec, resolution, and frame rate. |
| H.264, 1080p at 30 fps | Recommended bitrate: 14 Mbps | Use this row only if your stream uses this configuration. |
| H.264, 720p at 60 fps or 30 fps | Recommended bitrate: 8 Mbps | Use this row only if your stream uses this configuration. |
| Keyframe frequency | Recommended: 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds | Check the encoder’s keyframe or GOP interval setting. |
| RTMP/RTMPS video formats | H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 | Follow the exact error and confirm your encoder and selected ingest protocol support the format. |
| Audio formats | AAC or MP3 | Check the audio encoder if the warning identifies an audio format issue. |
| Bitrate encoding | CBR | Check the rate-control mode when the warning concerns bitrate or encoding. |
| Frame rate | Up to 60 fps | Make sure the selected value is supported by your chosen video configuration. |
| Connection protocol | RTMPS is recommended as the secure extension to RTMP | Use RTMPS if available in your encoder’s YouTube connection options. |
For the incorrect-format case covered in YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS error guidance, the specified combination is H.264 video and AAC audio. Do not treat that example as a universal fix for every format warning: use the message that Studio actually shows and the format options YouTube lists for that error.

If the stream looks or sounds bad
Compare what the encoder is producing with what Live Control Room receives. YouTube’s “my stream looks or sounds bad” troubleshooting guidance uses that distinction to separate encoder-side problems from possible outbound connection trouble.
The encoder preview is also poor
- Update the encoder to its latest available software version.
- Inspect picture and sound directly in the encoder, and review its error messages.
- Check CPU load for signs the machine is struggling to encode.
- Check the local recording or archive, if enabled, to see whether the same defect appears there.
- If these checks do not explain poor output, YouTube says trying a different encoder may help.
The encoder preview looks and sounds healthy
If the encoder output is healthy but YouTube’s received stream is not, test the outbound internet connection. YouTube recommends contacting your internet service provider if the connection test finds a problem. The cited guidance does not prescribe buying a router, cable, or switch as the default remedy.

Confirm recovery in Live Control Room
- Apply the correction indicated by the warning, then check whether the encoder is sending.
- Preview the incoming stream in Live Control Room and confirm that picture and sound are present and look right.
- Verify that the local archive is growing, if you are recording locally, and that the event is accessible.
- Watch the Health Indicator and messages during the event. YouTube’s encoder guidance says, “During the event, monitor the stream health and review messages.”
YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring audio and video quality throughout the event. If the warning persists after the relevant checks, the exact warning text, encoder, selected settings, and whether the encoder preview is healthy are the details needed for more targeted diagnosis. YouTube’s cited guidance does not identify a unique warning caused by encoder restarts or give a frequency for restart-caused warnings. Interface labels and supported settings can change, so check the live Help pages and the current message in Studio.
