Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteYes. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content, so background music can interrupt a broadcast while it is live. If you archive the stream, YouTube may also place a Content ID claim on the archived video after the broadcast ends. “Background” describes where the music is heard; it does not establish that you have permission to use it.
What can happen during and after a livestream
While you are live
YouTube says it scans all live streams for matches to third-party content. If it detects a match, it may warn you, show a placeholder, interrupt the stream, or terminate it if the content remains. A music license does not necessarily prevent an automated interruption: YouTube advises licensed creators to ask the rights owner to add their channel to its Content ID allowlist. YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance explains the scanning and allowlisting process.
After the broadcast
If you choose to archive the stream, a Content ID claim may be made after the stream is complete. This is a separate stage from any interruption during the broadcast. YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams describes both outcomes.
What a claim means—and what it does not
A Content ID claim is a platform action based on a match. Depending on the rights holder’s policy, the video may be monetized, tracked, or blocked; policies can differ by territory. A claim is not automatically a copyright strike. A copyright takedown is a separate process that can remove the video and lead to a strike. See YouTube’s explanation of copyright claims.

A match or claim does not, by itself, establish that the claimant owns every relevant right or settle whether your use is legally permitted. YouTube says copyright questions are determined by law, and permission or an exception such as fair use or fair dealing depends on the facts and applicable jurisdiction. Its copyright tips explain this distinction.
Why background music still needs rights
YouTube’s livestream terms put responsibility on the creator to have the necessary rights for live content, including music licensing rights. The terms also address archived content. A license must cover the actual use: check whether it includes livestreaming, keeping an archive, monetization, and the territories where viewers may access it. The livestream terms and conditions set out the creator’s rights obligations.
Do not assume that a song is safe because it is quiet, incidental, playing in the room, or credited in the description. Buying a copy of a track or naming its artist is not, by itself, permission to use it in a stream.

What to do when YouTube claims the archived video
-
Open YouTube Studio and inspect the claim. Review the claimant, the identified track, and the claimed segment. Compare those details with the license or other permission you have.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy. -
Check the scope of your authorization. Verify that it covers the relevant territories, livestream use, archived video, duration, and monetization. If you licensed the music, ask the rights owner to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist; YouTube says a stream can still be interrupted without allowlisting.
-
Choose a response that fits the facts. You can leave the claim in place, edit out the music, or dispute it if you have a valid basis—for example, you hold all necessary rights, a copyright exception applies, or the match is mistaken. YouTube says the claimant has 30 days to respond to a dispute. Giving credit or owning a copy alone is not a valid reason to dispute. Read YouTube’s dispute guidance before submitting one.

If you want the music removed, use Studio’s editing options. Depending on the video and claim, YouTube offers trimming the claimed segment, replacing the song with music from the Audio Library, or erasing or muting the song. Review the result before saving: edits saved from June 2025 onward cannot be reverted. See YouTube’s instructions for removing claimed content.
Who can make a Content ID claim?
Not every person who owns or controls a song automatically has access to Content ID. YouTube says eligibility depends in part on the owner’s demonstrated need and evidence of rights; Content ID references require exclusive rights in the territories claimed. Rights holders can also use other copyright-management and complaint tools. For manual claims, YouTube requires access to the relevant tool and advanced knowledge, and claimants must provide accurate timestamps. Its pages on Content ID eligibility and copyright claims describe these limits.
