OBS automatic reconnect restores the encoder’s connection attempt; it does not guarantee YouTube is receiving a healthy stream. Once OBS reconnects, check the stream status and any error messages in YouTube Live Control Room. If health remains poor or dropped frames continue, address the underlying connection or encoder settings rather than relying on another retry.
What to check immediately after OBS reconnects
- Confirm OBS is connected. A successful reconnect only confirms OBS has resumed trying to send its output.
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and check stream health. Read the current status and any specific message; YouTube’s indicator is a separate check from OBS’s connection state. YouTube advises: “During the event, monitor the stream health and review messages.” (YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions)
- Look for dropped frames in OBS. OBS says dropped frames indicate that the connection to the remote ingest server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. (OBS Project: Stream Connection Troubleshooting)
Use the message and symptom to choose what to investigate: a YouTube encoder-setting or ingest message points you toward the stream configuration; OBS dropped frames point toward connection stability or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. These are troubleshooting clues, not proof of a single cause.
Set encoder settings that match YouTube’s guidance
For YouTube RTMP/RTMPS streaming, YouTube’s encoder guidance specifies constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe frequency, and a keyframe interval no longer than four seconds. Select a bitrate for your codec, resolution, and frame rate that your stable upload connection can sustain. (YouTube Help: encoder settings)
H.264 bitrate examples
YouTube’s current help-page guidance, accessed in 2026, lists these H.264 recommendations. They are platform settings guidance, not a guarantee that your internet connection can sustain the rate or that a stream will remain healthy.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Output | YouTube-listed minimum | YouTube-listed recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p30 H.264 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p60 H.264 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
For other codecs, resolutions, or frame rates, use YouTube’s current encoder settings table rather than carrying these H.264 figures over. Test the bitrate on the actual connection you will use; a speed test result alone does not establish that upload capacity will be stable throughout an event. (YouTube Help: encoder settings and bitrate table)
Check the reconnect setting without treating it as a health fix
In OBS, open Settings → Advanced → Automatically Reconnect. OBS exposes reconnect retry behavior, including a maximum retry count and a starting delay that doubles on subsequent retries. Because appropriate values depend on the OBS version and the interruption, there is no universal retry count or delay that guarantees a green YouTube status. Reconnect is useful when an encoder connection is interrupted, but it cannot make an unstable network stable or correct a mismatched encoder configuration. After each recovery, verify YouTube’s status again.
Troubleshoot persistent unhealthy status or dropped frames
If OBS continues to report dropped frames
- Try a lower video bitrate. OBS lists lowering bitrate as a troubleshooting step when the connection cannot keep up with the configured rate.
- Test a wired connection if you are on Wi-Fi. OBS recommends a wired path where Wi-Fi may be unstable. This can help isolate wireless instability; it will not resolve every possible network issue.
- Investigate the actual connection path. OBS also identifies server selection, network software, VPNs, drivers, routers, cables, and other hardware as possible factors. Check relevant components rather than assuming the router, ISP, or a single cable is at fault. (OBS Project: Stream Connection Troubleshooting)
If YouTube shows a stream configuration or key problem
Read the exact Live Control Room message and compare it with the encoder settings YouTube recommends for your selected format. If your YouTube stream key was reset, copy the current key from Live Control Room and update the key in OBS. A stream key tells the encoder where to send the feed and allows YouTube to accept it; an old key may prevent the encoder from using the intended stream configuration. (YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder)

Do not confuse auto-start or auto-stop with stream health
YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop options control starting or stopping a broadcast from the encoder. They do not guarantee that the incoming stream will be healthy after a disconnection. (YouTube Help: encoder settings)
Prevent avoidable interruptions before going live
- Match settings to your intended output. Choose the codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval for YouTube’s current guidance and your stable upload capacity.
- Run a representative test before the event. Include audio and motion similar to what you plan to stream. YouTube recommends testing before going live, then monitoring stream health and messages during the event. (YouTube Help: encoder settings)
- Monitor both sides during the broadcast. Watch OBS for dropped frames and Live Control Room for YouTube’s status and messages. A retry in OBS is not a substitute for either check.
- Keep the current stream key in OBS. If YouTube resets the key, replace the old value with the current one from Live Control Room before starting the encoder.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuous prerecorded YouTube stream rather than a camera or live gameplay broadcast, StreamNeo can keep uploaded videos or a playlist looping from the cloud. Upload your recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on; uploads stream as made up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo, then start your free day.
