Amazon CloudFront can deliver a 24/7 live channel to viewers, but it is only the delivery layer: it does not turn a raw video feed into a playable stream. A typical AWS workflow ingests the source, encodes it with MediaLive, packages it with MediaPackage when needed, and uses CloudFront to distribute the resulting manifests and video segments. If MediaLive already produces formats suitable for every target device, AWS also documents MediaStore as an origin option.

The key design decisions are therefore upstream of CloudFront: how the source stays available, which playback formats you need, whether packaging features such as DRM are required, and how much latency your viewers can tolerate. CloudFront must then be configured for the actual endpoint paths and request behavior.

What CloudFront does in a 24/7 live channel

CloudFront is the content delivery network (CDN) in this design. It serves live manifests and video segments from locations closer to viewers, while an origin supplies those assets. The source still has to be ingested, encoded, and made available in formats that playback devices understand. Common formats include HLS, DASH, Smooth Streaming, and CMAF.

A continuous channel also needs a source that continues producing or supplying content. CloudFront distributes the output; it does not create a program schedule, encode a raw feed, or by itself keep the upstream source running. Plan source continuity, encoding, packaging, origin access, and viewer delivery as separate parts of the system.

Typical AWS request path

  1. Ingest: receive the live source in the AWS workflow.
  2. Encode: use MediaLive to create encoded video outputs.
  3. Package or store: use MediaPackage when the workflow needs packaging for multiple formats or packaging features; use MediaStore as an origin when the MediaLive output is already in the formats required by target devices.
  4. Distribute: configure CloudFront with the chosen origin and route matching requests to the appropriate origin endpoint.
  5. Play: viewers request manifests and segments through the CloudFront distribution using a compatible player.

AWS’s Live Streaming solution describes a reference design with two feeds processed in parallel by MediaLive, MediaPackage producing HLS, DASH, and CMAF endpoints, and CloudFront authorized to access MediaPackage using a CDN Identifier. That is one documented design, not a requirement that every channel use the same redundancy or endpoints.

Choose the origin path before configuring CloudFront

The main choice is whether the encoded output is already ready for every device and format you intend to serve, or whether a packaging service needs to produce and manage the required endpoints.

Path When it fits What to check
MediaLive → MediaPackage → CloudFront Use this path when you need MediaPackage to prepare multiple delivery formats or need packaging features such as DRM. Identify the MediaPackage endpoint and format, then configure CloudFront behaviors for the real manifest and segment paths. For a new MediaLive-to-MediaPackage workflow, AWS recommends MediaPackage v2 with a CMAF Ingest output group, including for low-latency delivery workflows.
MediaLive → MediaStore → CloudFront Consider this origin path when MediaLive already produces the formats required by all target playback devices. Verify that the output formats and endpoint structure actually match the devices and player behavior you support. Do not assume MediaStore supplies packaging that the workflow has not configured upstream.

Confirm the MediaPackage version and channel configuration before adapting an example written for an earlier version. In particular, do not carry v1-specific endpoint assumptions into a new v2 CMAF Ingest workflow without checking the actual endpoint and output configuration.

Configure CloudFront behaviors for the real endpoint

A distribution needs an origin pointing to the selected AWS endpoint and cache behaviors whose path patterns match the content that endpoint serves. AWS examples use distinct behaviors for manifests and segments. The exact extensions and paths depend on the endpoint format—such as HLS, CMAF, or DASH—and its configured identifiers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Record the endpoint paths first. Get the real endpoint URL and inspect the manifest and segment paths it exposes. Treat sample path patterns as examples only; substitute the identifiers and extensions for your endpoint.
  2. Add the origin. Set the CloudFront origin to the MediaPackage or MediaStore endpoint chosen for the architecture. Confirm that the origin address and access configuration correspond to the same endpoint.
  3. Create matching cache behaviors. Route manifest and segment requests according to the actual path structure. Check that the manifest behavior does not accidentally capture segment requests, or vice versa.
  4. Set request handling to match the format. Configure query-string forwarding and caching behavior for the player and endpoint features in use. Do not discard request parameters that the endpoint needs to interpret a playback request.
  5. Test through CloudFront. Request a manifest through the distribution, then verify that its referenced segments can also be fetched through the intended behaviors. Test with the player and formats your audience will use.

LL-HLS blocking playlist requests

For LL-HLS blocking playlist requests, AWS specifies that the manifest cache policy must forward the _HLS_msn and _HLS_part query-string parameters when using the blocking playlist request feature. Apply that requirement to the manifest behavior; a policy that omits those parameters can prevent the endpoint from receiving the information needed for those requests. Confirm the exact endpoint and player behavior before applying the setting to other formats.

Protect the origin and plan for continuity

AWS recommends header-based CDN authorization between MediaPackage and CloudFront. Configure origin access so that the intended CDN can fetch the packaged output, and verify that direct origin access is not inadvertently left open when the workflow is meant to serve viewers through the distribution.

For a 24/7 service, separately plan what happens when an input feed, encoder, packaging endpoint, or delivery path fails. The AWS Live Streaming reference design’s parallel feeds illustrate one approach to upstream redundancy, but the appropriate failover design depends on the channel’s requirements. CloudFront should not be treated as a substitute for resilient source and encoding operations.

  • Confirm which component detects an upstream failure and which component switches to a healthy input or output.
  • Verify that failover preserves the endpoint and playback format expected by viewers.
  • Test both the normal path and the recovery path before relying on the channel continuously.
  • Monitor the source, encoding, packaging, and delivery stages separately so a failure can be narrowed to the right layer.

Do not guess at the bitrate or video ladder

The CloudFront workflow depends on encoded outputs, but there is no single bitrate, resolution, or encoding ladder established for every 24/7 channel. Those values depend on the source, intended picture quality, audience devices, network conditions, and delivery budget. Choose and validate the MediaLive output ladder for the actual channel rather than copying an unrelated example.

Similarly, the AWS material summarized here does not establish universal CloudFront cache durations, endpoint path strings, or a single distribution policy for all formats. Set those from the endpoint’s requirements and the playback behavior you need. For a long-running channel, validate manifest freshness and segment availability during playback rather than assuming one cache configuration suits every origin and format.

Estimate 24/7 costs from your own workload

AWS’s deployment guidance gives an illustrative figure of $69.74 per hour for a specific example with 1,000 viewers and a one-hour live event; the publication year is not stated. That is an event example under stated output, audience, and traffic assumptions, not a current quote for operating a continuous channel. Do not multiply it by 24 and treat the result as a 24/7 budget.

Build an estimate around the channel’s actual workload and current prices for the account’s Region. AWS identifies output bitrate, audience traffic, selected services, and the split between origin and CDN delivery as cost factors. Before estimating, establish:

  • the output formats and bitrate ladder;
  • expected concurrent viewers and total viewing hours;
  • where viewers are located;
  • whether the design uses redundancy;
  • whether packaging features or multiple endpoints are required; and
  • the current regional prices for the AWS services in the design.

Troubleshoot common delivery failures

Symptom Likely area to check What to verify
CloudFront returns an error for a manifest or segment Origin, path pattern, or origin authorization Compare the requested path with the actual endpoint path, confirm the matching behavior targets the intended origin, and check the MediaPackage CDN authorization configuration.
The manifest loads but playback stalls or segments fail Segment behavior or upstream output Check whether segment requests match the right behavior and whether the referenced segments exist at the origin in the expected format.
LL-HLS blocking playlist requests do not behave as expected Manifest cache policy When using blocking playlist requests, confirm that the manifest policy forwards both _HLS_msn and _HLS_part.
Some devices cannot play the channel Encoding, packaging, or format coverage Check whether the MediaLive output and packaged endpoint formats actually cover those devices. If multiple formats or packaging features are needed, reconsider whether MediaPackage is required.
The channel stops after an input or encoder problem Source and upstream recovery CloudFront distributes available output; inspect input continuity, MediaLive processing, and the failover behavior configured for the upstream workflow.

Check rights and platform suitability before scheduling content

For a channel built from recorded material, confirm that you have the rights needed to stream every video, music track, image, and other included work. A technically valid AWS delivery path does not establish permission to broadcast the content or guarantee that a platform will accept a particular channel format. Review the applicable platform rules for the account and content before leaving a stream running continuously.

Choose the architecture by the job

Use CloudFront when you need a CDN in an AWS live-video workflow and are prepared to operate the source, encoding, origin, endpoint configuration, and viewer delivery. Choose MediaPackage when packaging across formats or packaging features are needed; consider MediaStore when MediaLive has already produced the formats required by your devices. For a new MediaLive-to-MediaPackage workflow, AWS points to MediaPackage v2 CMAF Ingest, including for low-latency delivery. The durable design principle is to match each CloudFront behavior and cache policy to the endpoint and request pattern it actually serves.
