Monitor a MediaLive-to-YouTube stream from both ends: use Amazon CloudWatch to see whether MediaLive is processing frames and writing output, then use YouTube Live Control Room to check what YouTube is receiving and report. Neither view alone proves every viewer can play the stream.

What CloudWatch and YouTube each tell you

Monitoring view What it observes What it can miss
Amazon CloudWatch metrics and alarms MediaLive processing and output activity, including whether outputs are being written and whether frames are dropped. Metrics are near real-time and AWS documents 15-month retention. AWS: Monitoring channels using Amazon CloudWatch metrics Successful YouTube ingest or playback quality for every viewer.
YouTube Live Control Room YouTube’s view of stream health, status messages, errors and real-time analytics. YouTube: See your live stream’s metrics Whether MediaLive itself is processing and producing output as expected.

Use the two timelines together during an event. A healthy-looking AWS output metric does not confirm YouTube has accepted the stream, and a YouTube status view does not replace AWS-side monitoring.

Find the right MediaLive metrics

Choose dimensions for the actual output

In CloudWatch, open the MediaLive metrics and select the dimensions corresponding to the relevant channel, output group and pipeline. Match the metric to the output you expect to reach YouTube; channel configuration determines which dimensions and metrics apply. Verify names and availability in the current console or API. AWS describes these metrics as near real-time, with a retention period of 15 months. AWS metric monitoring documentation AWS output metrics documentation

Track ActiveOutputs

ActiveOutputs is the most direct documented signal for output activity. A value of zero means none of the outputs are being successfully written to their destinations. AWS recommends using the Minimum statistic when looking for a period in which one or more outputs were not produced. Inspect the output group, channel and pipeline dimensions so the alarm covers the intended destination.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Zero is not automatically an incident: a channel may be starting, intentionally paused, or configured to pause an output when input is lost. Establish expected startup, pause and schedule behavior before routing a zero value to an on-call alert. Also, no datapoints are not the same as a zero metric; absent data can have metric-specific explanations, such as a channel not running or not generating output audio. AWS: Output metrics

Track dropped frames

Use the dropped-frame metrics to spot processing trouble, and inspect their time series and pipeline dimensions. AWS says zero dropped frames is expected and indicates that MediaLive is processing incoming frames in real time. A nonzero reading should prompt investigation of the affected pipeline and time window rather than an assumption that YouTube ingest has failed. AWS: Output metrics

Use NetworkOut only as context

NetworkOut counts traffic sent from MediaLive, but that traffic can include media output as well as HTTP GET requests for pull inputs, NTP and DNS. It is not proof that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream. Likewise, Output4xxErrors is documented for HTTP delivery and may not be the right indicator for an RTMP or RTMPS destination. AWS: Output metrics

Create useful CloudWatch alarms

  1. Open the relevant MediaLive metric. Select the metric and dimensions for the channel, output group and pipeline that represent the YouTube output.
  2. Choose the statistic and evaluation window. For an expected output that must not disappear during a period, consider the Minimum statistic for ActiveOutputs. Set the period and number of datapoints to match how quickly you need to detect an interruption and how much transient variation you can tolerate.
  3. Set a channel-specific threshold. There is no universal AWS threshold for a MediaLive-to-YouTube stream. Base the threshold on the channel’s normal operation, startup behavior, intentional pauses and response needs.
  4. Route the alarm to an operator. Configure an appropriate notification action and confirm it reaches the people who can investigate. Treat notification routing as part of the operational setup, not as proof that the output is healthy.
  5. Repeat for frame processing signals. Choose an appropriate dropped-frame metric, statistic, period, threshold and datapoint count. Review the resulting time series and pipeline dimension during normal operation before relying on it for paging.

Alarm behavior depends on the selected metric, statistic, comparison operator, threshold, period and datapoints. AWS’s workflow monitor also supports reusable alarm template groups and templates: a template specifies a resource type and metric, then the statistic, comparison operator, threshold, period and datapoints. Add channel alerts as a separate signal

MediaLive can emit channel alerts as CloudWatch events. You can create an event rule to send these events to a notification destination such as Amazon SNS. AWS describes event emission as best effort, so use events alongside metric alarms that cover the failure modes important to your operation; do not rely on event delivery as the sole alert path. AWS: Monitoring a channel or multiplex using CloudWatch Events

Check YouTube’s ingest view during the stream

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room for the event. Watch the stream health and status messages while MediaLive is sending output.
  2. Read the specific error and its timestamp. YouTube’s status messages include error instructions and timestamps, with critical and moderate severity distinguished. Follow the corrective action shown for the actual message rather than applying a generic fix.
  3. Correlate the time with AWS. Compare the YouTube error timestamp with CloudWatch metric and alarm timelines. Check whether output activity dropped, frames were dropped, or an AWS channel alert appeared around the same time.
  4. Use real-time analytics as destination context. Review YouTube’s analytics alongside its health status; neither should be treated as a guarantee that every viewer can play the stream.

YouTube advises testing before a live event and monitoring stream health during it. Its encoder recommendations vary by resolution, frame rate, codec and ingestion protocol; for RTMP-based streaming, YouTube recommends RTMPS, a two-second keyframe interval and not exceeding four seconds. These are ingestion configuration references, not substitutes for watching the live health messages. Follow the current event-specific guidance and investigate the exact Live Control Room error. Troubleshoot common monitoring signals

Signal or symptom What to check Practical response
ActiveOutputs is zero Confirm channel state, expected startup or pause, input-loss pause configuration, and the selected output group and pipeline. Determine whether zero is intentional for that time. If output should be active, inspect the channel and output configuration and correlate with YouTube’s status.
No datapoints appear Check whether the channel is running and whether that metric is generated for the current configuration. Do not treat missing data as a zero reading. Validate metric availability and dimensions in CloudWatch or the current AWS API documentation.
Dropped-frame metric rises Identify the affected pipeline and timeframe; compare with other MediaLive metrics and YouTube’s timestamped messages. Investigate processing behavior for the affected pipeline and use the destination-side message to narrow down ingest symptoms.
NetworkOut is nonzero but YouTube reports a problem Remember that NetworkOut includes non-media traffic and is not destination confirmation. Prioritize the exact YouTube health message and check output activity and errors that match the configured delivery protocol.
Output4xxErrors does not explain an RTMP/RTMPS failure This metric is documented for HTTP delivery. Use signals appropriate to the configured destination and verify ingest in YouTube Live Control Room.
An alarm fires during startup or a planned pause Compare the alarm window with channel schedules and intentional pause behavior. Adjust the threshold, period or datapoints to reflect tolerated startup and pause windows without obscuring real interruptions.
A YouTube error has no matching AWS alarm Compare the timestamp with CloudWatch data, dimensions, alarm evaluation windows and event notifications. Use YouTube’s instructions to investigate destination ingest; refine AWS metric coverage if the failure was not represented by an alarm.

Or let it run in the cloud
