As a decimal-unit planning rule, each sustained 1 Mbps uses about 0.45 GB per hour, or 10.8 GB per day, for one input copy. Add the bitrates of simultaneous renditions first; if you send redundant copies, count both copies for incoming transfer.
Estimate data from bitrate and runtime
For a steady aggregate input bitrate, use these planning formulas:
- GB per hour ≈ aggregate bitrate in Mbps × 0.45
- GB per day ≈ aggregate bitrate in Mbps × 10.8
These are decimal GB estimates. Actual transfer can differ because of protocol overhead, variable bitrate, and whether a billing or monitoring display uses decimal GB or binary GiB. AWS’s deployment guide uses a binary conversion convention in its worked example, so its result may differ slightly from the decimal rule here.
Include every simultaneous rendition
If the encoder sends multiple input renditions at once, add their bitrates to get the aggregate bitrate before calculating. For example, the calculation must use the sum of all active inputs, not just the bitrate of the highest-quality rendition.

Account for redundant copies
With redundant input enabled, two identical copies are sent to separate ingest URLs. Count both copies when estimating network transfer into MediaPackage. MediaPackage uses one active input source and can switch to the other on failover, but the duplicate copy still contributes to incoming transfer.
Worked examples
One 6 Mbps input
At a constant aggregate input bitrate of 6 Mbps, the decimal estimate is about 2.7 GB per hour, or 64.8 GB over 24 hours, for one copy. These figures are arithmetic from the planning rule, not measurements of a particular stream.

Two redundant 6 Mbps copies
If both redundant copies are sent continuously, incoming transfer is about 5.4 GB per hour, or 129.6 GB in 24 hours, using the same decimal estimate.
AWS’s 4.2 Mbps example
AWS’s deployment guide gives a worked conversion of 4.2 Mbps aggregate input to approximately 1.85 GB per hour, and 3.70 GB per hour with redundancy. The guide’s year is not stated on the cited page. This is an illustrative calculation, not a universal usage figure or a current price quote.

Know which traffic leg you mean
MediaPackage receives content from an upstream encoder, such as AWS Elemental MediaLive, then dynamically packages output when a downstream device or CDN requests it. The endpoint can produce different streaming formats, and the output tracks depend on its configuration. AWS describes a channel as the entry point for a content stream into MediaPackage: AWS Elemental MediaPackage channel documentation.

The title does not specify whether MediaPackage is an intermediary feeding YouTube or whether “YouTube stream” refers to the destination in a broader workflow. Keep ingest, MediaPackage output, and viewer delivery separate when estimating usage.

Measure MediaPackage output in CloudWatch
AWS documents the live EgressBytes CloudWatch metric as the bytes MediaPackage successfully sends for each request. Metrics are published every minute or more frequently; an interval with no requests has no output data. To quantify observed MediaPackage egress, sum the metric’s byte values over the period you want to assess. Do not treat encoder ingest bitrate as a direct measurement of output.
Choose the encoder bitrate separately
For YouTube ingest, follow the current recommendations for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate; those settings determine the source bitrate used in your estimate. YouTube’s guidance lists, for example, H.264 at 5 Mbps for 1080p30 and 6 Mbps for 1080p60, while its AV1/H.265 recommendations are 10 Mbps for 1080p30 and 12 Mbps for 1080p60. These are YouTube encoder recommendations, not MediaPackage measurements. See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

YouTube also says it automatically transcodes a live stream into multiple output formats so viewers can watch across devices and networks. That downstream transcoding does not mean viewer delivery volume should be counted as MediaPackage output unless the delivery path actually traverses MediaPackage.
