MediaPackage does not send its output directly to YouTube Live in the documented AWS workflow. MediaPackage packages a live input for playback by viewers; YouTube HLS ingest expects an encoder to upload playlists and media segments to a YouTube-provided HTTPS endpoint. For an AWS-native path, configure MediaLive to send HLS to YouTube. Add MediaPackage separately if you also need an AWS playback origin for your audience.
Can you send MediaPackage output to YouTube Live?
Not as a direct output in the documented architecture. AWS describes MediaPackage as an origin and packaging service: an upstream encoder sends it live content, and MediaPackage serves a playback presentation over HTTPS when a downstream player requests it. YouTube HLS ingest works in the other direction: an encoder uploads live playlists and segments to the YouTube ingest URL.
That makes the relevant roles distinct: MediaLive (or another compatible encoder) sends the live program to YouTube; MediaPackage can serve a separate playback presentation to viewers or another downstream client. AWS’s overview of the flow is in MediaPackage live processing flow.
Choose the workflow that matches your goal
| Goal | Workflow | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Stream an AWS-encoded program to YouTube | Configure an AWS Elemental MediaLive HLS output group with the current YouTube HLS destination. | YouTube HLS has higher latency than continuous RTMP-style delivery and disables YouTube’s Ultra low-latency mode. |
| Stream to YouTube and provide a separate playback origin | Send the program to YouTube from an encoder and feed MediaPackage through an input path supported by the MediaPackage generation in use. | This adds a separately configured playback service and requires validating YouTube ingest and MediaPackage playback independently. |
Use the MediaPackage v2 documentation for a v2 workflow. It describes HLS and CMAF live inputs, AWS Signature Version 4 authorization, channel policy behavior, and TS/HLS or CMAF endpoints. The legacy live guide documents a different flow, including HLS over WebDAV with digest authentication. Do not mix their input, authorization, or endpoint assumptions. See MediaPackage v2 supported inputs and outputs and the legacy MediaPackage live input guide.

Configure MediaLive HLS output for YouTube
The AWS console example cited here was published on 2021-04-14. Its two-second segment setting is an example, not a guarantee that console labels or static destination strings remain unchanged. Generate the destination in the current YouTube Live Control Room and use the current AWS console labels.
- Create or select a YouTube HLS stream. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select a stream key and choose HLS as the stream protocol. Copy the generated Stream URL; if you configure redundant ingest, also copy the Backup server URL. The HLS URL begins with HTTPS and is specific to the selected stream setup. Do not use an old example URL as a universal endpoint. For HDR, leave “Turn on manual resolution” unchecked. Follow YouTube’s HLS setup instructions.
- Configure the incoming program in MediaLive. Set up the MediaLive input and channel for the live source using the input path appropriate to your encoder and AWS configuration.
- Add an HLS output group. In the MediaLive channel configuration, add an HLS output group. Enter the current YouTube HLS destination from Live Control Room and select the HLS basic PUT setting in the CDN settings. AWS’s published example uses a two-second segment setting; YouTube permits segment durations from one to four seconds.
- Set the output profile to meet YouTube’s HLS requirements. Configure video, audio, muxing, GOP, and frame rate for the selected YouTube stream profile and your source. The YouTube developer guide specifies muxed M2TS video/audio, H.264 or HEVC video, AAC audio, closed GOP, and frame rates up to 60 fps. For HDR it specifies HEVC, 10-bit PQ or HLG, and Rec. 2020 color primaries. YouTube Help also lists AAC, AC3, and EAC3 audio support for HLS; use the profile-specific guidance rather than assuming every combination applies to every stream.
- Start the channel and check YouTube ingest. Use Live Control Room’s preview and status indicators to verify that YouTube is receiving the stream and that the output is acceptable before relying on it for a live event.
AWS’s example configuration is described in Chris Zhang’s 2021 guide to streaming 4K HDR to YouTube with MediaLive or Elemental Live. Treat its console details as an example alongside current YouTube-generated URLs and current AWS controls.

HLS settings YouTube expects
- Transport and upload: use HTTPS and HTTP PUT or POST for media playlists and segments. The ingestion URL is completed with the playlist or segment filename according to the encoder’s HLS workflow.
- Segments: use TS segments with durations from one to four seconds.
- Playlist behavior: use a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments.
- Not supported in this setup: do not use byte-range mode or media encryption. HTTPS protects the upload connection; YouTube’s HLS guidance does not allow encryption beyond HTTPS.
- Latency: HLS sends segments rather than a continuous stream, so it has higher latency than continuous RTMP-style delivery; choosing HLS disables YouTube’s Ultra low-latency mode.
For the detailed ingest protocol and HDR requirements, consult Google’s YouTube Live HLS delivery guide.
Add MediaPackage for a separate viewer playback origin
If viewers also need a playback endpoint hosted through MediaPackage, configure it as a separate path from YouTube ingest. Feed MediaPackage from an upstream encoder using the supported input for the specific MediaPackage generation, create the appropriate origin endpoint, and test the returned playback manifest with the intended downstream player. In MediaPackage v2, packaging is performed dynamically when a downstream playback request arrives; a working YouTube stream does not by itself verify that this playback endpoint is configured correctly.

Verify both paths independently
- YouTube: confirm the selected stream key and HLS destination in Live Control Room, then check preview and ingest status after MediaLive starts.
- MediaPackage: if configured, request and validate its playback manifest separately with the intended player or client.
- Generation match: confirm that the MediaPackage input, authorization, and endpoint instructions you followed all belong to v2 or all belong to the legacy live workflow; their documented flows differ.
Common configuration problems
- YouTube does not receive the stream: check that the encoder uses the current HLS Stream URL from the selected Live Control Room stream, that the destination is HTTPS, and that the HLS output is configured to upload with PUT or POST as required.
- Segments or playlists are rejected: verify TS segment format, a duration within one to four seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and that byte-range mode and media encryption are off.
- Video or audio is incompatible: compare the output’s muxing, video and audio codecs, closed GOP, and frame rate with YouTube’s HLS guide and the selected stream profile. HDR needs the specified HEVC, 10-bit PQ or HLG, and Rec. 2020 combination.
- YouTube works but the MediaPackage player does not: troubleshoot the playback origin and its manifest separately. Confirm the MediaPackage generation and supported input path instead of treating the YouTube ingest URL as a MediaPackage playback endpoint.
- Unexpected delay: HLS has higher latency than continuous RTMP-style delivery, and YouTube’s Ultra low-latency mode is unavailable when HLS is selected.
