Pair those settings with trusted moderators: automated filtering is not perfect, and Super Chat spam needs human attention when it gets through.
Start with YouTube’s built-in filters
In YouTube Studio, configure blocked words and enable the option to hold potentially inappropriate live chat messages for review. These controls address different problems: blocked words target terms you already recognize, while review holds catch messages YouTube flags for a moderator to assess.
Set blocked words
Add recurring spam terms, obvious variants, and phrases used in repeated promotions to your blocked-words list. Keep the list focused: broad or common terms may catch ordinary viewers’ messages as well as spam. Revisit it when spam patterns change.
Hold flagged messages for review
Enable the setting to hold potentially inappropriate live chat messages for review. Start with Basic moderation; consider Strict if you want a broader range of messages held. Held messages stay hidden unless a moderator takes action. YouTube cautions, “No system is perfect,” so treat this as a queue for human review, not a guarantee that spam will be stopped.

Use slow mode when messages arrive too quickly
Turn on slow mode to limit how often each user can post. It can reduce rapid-fire spam without closing chat to ordinary viewers. The channel owner, moderators, and channel members are exempt from the rate limit, so their messages are not slowed in the same way.
Slow mode can be combined with subscriber-only chat. It adds friction for legitimate viewers too, especially during fast-moving conversations, so choose a posting interval that still lets people participate.

Restrict who can participate if spam continues
Subscriber-only live chat
Enable subscriber-only chat and, if useful, set a minimum subscription duration. This means viewers must be subscribed for long enough to comment. It can make drive-by spam harder, but it also excludes new viewers who have not subscribed or met the duration threshold.
Members-only chat
Members-only chat is another way to narrow participation to channel members. It may be appropriate when a stream needs a more restricted conversation, but it excludes non-members. You cannot enable members-only chat and subscriber-only chat at the same time.

Neither restriction guarantees that spam will stop. Use them as access choices when the level of disruption warrants the added barrier for legitimate viewers.
Cover a 24/7 stream with trusted moderators
A continuous stream can attract messages at any hour, so arrange moderator coverage around the periods when spam appears rather than relying only on automatic controls. YouTube moderators can remove messages, time out users, and hide users from the channel. Available timeout choices range from 10 seconds to 24 hours.

Managing moderators can change certain live chat settings, but they do not have access to Live Control Room or YouTube Studio. Set up the channel-level controls yourself, then give trusted moderators clear authority and guidance for handling messages and repeat offenders.

YouTube does not publish comparative effectiveness rates for these controls, so there is no evidence-based percentage or guaranteed ranking. Choose based on whether you need to target known words, delay messages for review, reduce posting frequency, narrow access, or respond to accounts.

Reassess as the stream changes
Check the chat controls and review held messages as conditions change. If legitimate messages are being held or viewers are struggling to participate, adjust blocked terms or ease restrictions. If new spam patterns appear, update the blocked list, use a stronger review setting, or add a participation limit. This is an operational practice, not a schedule prescribed by YouTube or a promise of a particular reduction in spam.
