If FFmpeg has exited, YouTube cannot receive more video from that process. Diagnose which layer failed, then restart FFmpeg under a process supervisor such as systemd so it can recover from an exit and start again after an EC2 reboot. Separately, use FFmpeg output-recovery options for output failures that happen while FFmpeg is still running, and verify YouTube’s event and ingest status before assuming a restarted encoder will resume the same live event.
First identify what stopped
An interrupted stream can have several different causes: the FFmpeg process exited, its network output failed while the process remained alive, the EC2 host rebooted, or YouTube stopped accepting the feed. These failures need different recovery mechanisms. An FFmpeg error alone does not show that EC2 infrastructure failed.
- Check FFmpeg’s exit and logs. Record its exit status and the final log messages. Look for an input failure, an invalid option, a permission problem, or an output/network error.
- Check the process supervisor. If FFmpeg runs as a service, inspect its current state and recent service journal entries. If there is no supervisor, confirm whether the process is still running rather than relying on an old terminal or log message.
- Check EC2 health and reboot history. In the AWS Management Console, open EC2 > Instances, select the instance, and review its status checks and system or boot logs. Distinguish a system status check failure from an instance status check failure: AWS automatic instance recovery addresses qualifying underlying infrastructure problems associated with failed system checks, not every application or instance-level fault. AWS documents the scope and configuration of automatic instance recovery.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room. Confirm the event’s current status and whether it is accepting the selected protocol and stream. Verify the destination, stream key, and ingest configuration.
Keep timestamps from the FFmpeg log, system journal, EC2 events, and YouTube status together. Their sequence helps distinguish a process crash from a host reboot or an ingest-side change.
Restart FFmpeg automatically when the process exits
A retry option for an FFmpeg output is not a process supervisor. If the FFmpeg process has exited, an operating-system service manager must start a new process. On Linux EC2 instances, systemd is a common choice: configure the encoder as a service, set a restart policy appropriate to the workload, and enable the service at boot.

Configure the service safely
- Keep the FFmpeg command, working directory, input paths, and environment in controlled service configuration. Test the command manually as the same operating-system user before enabling automatic restarts.
- Do not put a YouTube stream key in a command that may be recorded in shell history or exposed in logs. Store sensitive values in a suitably protected configuration or secret-management mechanism, restrict access, and check whether FFmpeg’s logging exposes the destination URL.
- Choose a restart delay and policy based on the failure mode. A short delay can help with transient failures; rapid repeated restarts can conceal a bad input, invalid configuration, exhausted disk, or rejected stream key. Preserve logs and inspect repeated failures rather than treating a restart loop as a fix.
- After enabling the service, verify that it starts on boot and that it runs under the intended user with access to the media files and credentials.
There is no single systemd unit or restart policy that fits every FFmpeg command and EC2 image. Validate the service against the deployed operating system, FFmpeg build, input, and ingest settings.
Verify the restart
- Stop the FFmpeg process in a controlled test and confirm that the service manager records the exit and starts a replacement.
- Confirm the new process has the expected input and output, and that its logs show it reaching the intended ingest endpoint.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room to see whether the event is receiving the feed. Do not infer successful recovery only from a running FFmpeg process.
Use FFmpeg output recovery only for a running process
FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer documents the attempt_recovery option for attempting to recover a failed output; it is false by default. Its scope is output recovery while FFmpeg remains alive. It cannot restart a process that has exited. See the FFmpeg FIFO muxer documentation, and check the documentation matching the FFmpeg version installed on the instance.

FIFO queue behavior also involves a trade-off: dropping packets on overflow can keep the encoder from blocking, but stream content may be omitted. Select options only after checking the deployed build’s documentation and testing with the actual media input and ingest endpoint. Do not assume a setting that handles a temporary output problem will also address a process crash, host reboot, or YouTube event-state change.
Recover after an EC2 reboot or infrastructure problem
AWS automatic instance recovery is intended for supported instances with qualifying system status check failures caused by underlying hardware or software problems. Recovery presents to the instance as an unplanned reboot; volatile memory is lost and operating-system uptime resets. Check the actual instance’s support and recovery configuration in AWS rather than assuming every instance is covered. AWS automatic instance recovery details.

After a reboot or recovery, check whether the application is running and start it if needed. AWS’s troubleshooting guidance specifically advises checking the workload after recovery. To make the stream unattended, enable the FFmpeg service at boot and confirm it can access its files and credentials when started without an interactive login. Confirm that YouTube will accept the restarted encoder
A restarted encoder is not proof that the original YouTube live event has resumed. Check the current event and stream status in YouTube Live Control Room, verify the protocol-specific destination and stream key, and follow YouTube’s instructions for that ingest method. Do not apply reconnect behavior documented for another service to YouTube. For example, AWS IVS describes behavior specific to IVS; that is not evidence of what a YouTube event will do after a reconnect. Check YouTube’s live status and event controls directly.

Troubleshoot common recovery failures
- The FFmpeg service is active, but YouTube shows no incoming feed: inspect the new process’s output logs, destination and protocol settings, stream key, and current event status. A running process alone does not prove that ingest is working.
- The service starts and immediately exits again: use the service journal and FFmpeg’s final log lines to find the repeating cause. Check the input path, file permissions, available storage, command options, and credentials before allowing repeated retries to continue.
- The instance rebooted, but the stream did not return: verify the service is enabled at boot and inspect its boot-time logs. Confirm that required mounts, media files, environment, and secrets are available to the service user.
- FFmpeg stays alive but output stops: treat this as an output or ingest failure, not a process-exit problem. Check network and destination errors, then validate any FIFO recovery configuration against the installed FFmpeg documentation and actual endpoint.
- AWS status checks fail: determine whether the failed check is a system check or an instance check and follow AWS recovery guidance for the actual condition. Do not treat an encoder crash as evidence that automatic instance recovery should run.
