How to Show Now-Playing Titles During a Server-Run YouTube Playlist Livestream

A now-playing label needs current-item data, an overlay renderer, and a path into the outgoing stream. Here is how to evaluate and test that chain for server-run YouTube playlists.

To show a changing song or video title on a server-run YouTube playlist livestream, three things must work together: the player or playlist scheduler must expose which item is playing, that title must reach an overlay, and the overlay must be included in the video sent to YouTube. YouTube’s live-broadcast controls do not automatically create a now-playing label. There is no single supported end-to-end method established for unattended server setups, so choose a player and overlay path that you can verify in your own environment.

How the now-playing title gets onto the stream

The title has to travel through a chain of separate components:

  1. Playback state: the playlist player or scheduler identifies the current item.
  2. Title data: the current title is read from playback state or, for some tools, from tracklist metadata such as chapters or a video description.
  3. Overlay rendering: a renderer displays that text, commonly as a browser source in an OBS scene.
  4. Stream output: the scene containing the overlay is composited into the outgoing video sent to YouTube.

If any link is missing, the label may be blank, stale, or absent from the broadcast. A system that can manage a YouTube broadcast is not necessarily able to identify which playlist item is playing.

Choose an approach that matches your playlist

Use chapter or description tracklists when titles are encoded in the video metadata

The OBS Forums resource Music on stream describes an overlay that can use YouTube chapters or a playlist in a video description as inputs. This may suit a long video containing a tracklist, where the current track can be inferred from the metadata format the tool supports. It is a community resource, not official YouTube functionality, and its listing is not an independent compatibility test.

Consider a playlist player with a title display option

The GitHub project OBS-Youtube-Player describes playing a YouTube playlist in an OBS browser source and optionally displaying the current song name and author. Its description makes it an example to evaluate if you want playlist playback and a title display in one OBS-oriented setup. Current maintenance, compatibility, and unattended server operation have not been established; confirm these for your own system before relying on it.

Compare the actual data path, not just the overlay appearance

These approaches are described differently, so evaluate them against your workflow rather than assuming either one is universally suitable:

  • Metadata: does each video contain chapters or a description tracklist in the format the overlay expects, or does the player expose the current playlist item?
  • Playback location: does the player actually run in your remote or headless environment, rather than only on a desktop where you tested it?
  • State handoff: can the current title reach the OBS browser source or other renderer in that environment?
  • Recovery: after a player restart or stream reconnect, does the title update to match the item that is now playing?
  • Presentation: can you control the placement and appearance well enough for long titles and your scene layout?

These are practical evaluation criteria inferred from the tools’ described capabilities, not results of comparative testing.

Set up and verify the title path

  1. Identify the playlist player or scheduler. Establish which process selects and plays each YouTube playlist item, and whether it exposes current-item state. Do not assume YouTube’s broadcast controls provide that state.
  2. Choose where the title comes from. Use a tool that reads the player’s current item, or choose a chapter/description-based approach only if your video metadata follows the format it supports.
  3. Connect title data to a renderer. In an OBS-oriented setup, a browser source is one documented way to render web content in a scene. For a custom server setup, you may need another way to share state with the renderer; the sources cited here do not establish a particular endpoint protocol for this use.
  4. Add the renderer to the outgoing scene. Confirm the scene sent to YouTube includes the title overlay, not merely a preview or a separate local window.
  5. Test before relying on unattended playback. Use a private test stream and check a title change at a playlist transition, a long title, a pause, a player restart, and a stream reconnect. Verify that the visible text follows the actual current item after each event.

Keep YouTube playlists, OBS media playlists, and HLS segments distinct

OBS’s built-in media-source playlist controls apply to media files handled by OBS. The OBS Media Sources documentation does not establish that those controls play or track a YouTube-hosted playlist.

Likewise, the playlist discussed in YouTube’s HLS setup guidance concerns livestream ingestion and segment transport, not a playlist of YouTube videos. YouTube’s Live Streaming API overview describes broadcast and stream management; it does not document a current-playlist-item overlay feature. Keep broadcast management separate from the component that knows the title currently playing.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live with uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos; it does not go live from a camera. This does not itself establish a now-playing title overlay, so confirm that your chosen title and overlay workflow can still be used if you need the label.
