To check whether a music license covers continuous YouTube livestream playback, read the actual grant and confirm that it expressly permits live streaming on YouTube for your channel, territories, schedule, monetization and any archived replay. Verify that it covers both the sound recording and the underlying composition, and ask the rights holder to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Allowlisting can reduce interruption risk, but it does not grant rights the license omits.
Check the license track by track
Do not assume that permission to use a track in an ordinary uploaded video also covers a continuous live broadcast. For each track in the stream, use the executed agreement or written permission from the rights holder to check these terms.
- Live use: Look for express language covering live streaming, livestreaming, broadcasting or an equivalent use. If the grant only describes uploaded or on-demand videos, ask the licensor to confirm live use in writing.
- YouTube and your channel: Confirm that YouTube and the channel or account carrying the stream are within scope. Ask the rights holder about adding that channel to its Content ID allowlist, particularly if its instructions or licensing process call for it.
- Both music rights layers: Identify who controls the sound recording (the master) and who controls the underlying musical composition. Confirm that the grant covers the necessary permissions for both, whether from the owners directly or through authorized representatives.
- Territory and term: Compare the license’s countries or territories and dates with where and when the stream and its replay will be available. Do not infer worldwide coverage or an unlimited term. YouTube’s Creator Music usage details, for example, show that territory restrictions can vary by track.
- Monetization and commercial context: Check for permission covering monetization, sponsorships and any other commercial context relevant to your stream. A platform’s music availability or a process for handling claims does not, by itself, establish that you have all necessary rights.
- Continuous playback and loops: Check for restrictions on duration, number of uses, repetition or background use. If the terms do not clearly address continuous or looped playback, request written clarification rather than assuming it is included.
- Archive and replay: Determine whether the license covers the archived livestream and how long the replay may remain available, including any monetization after the live broadcast ends. Permission for the live transmission alone may not answer the replay question.
Why a music license may not prevent a YouTube interruption
YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams says live streams are scanned for third-party content and may be interrupted or terminated if that content remains. It tells creators who licensed third-party content to ask the owner to add their channel to the Content ID allowlist. Without allowlisting, an interruption can still occur even when the creator has relevant rights.
Allowlisting is therefore a platform-enforcement step, not a replacement for permission. Separately, YouTube says claims on an archived live stream occur after the stream ends if the creator archives it. Keep the live-use, replay and allowlisting questions distinct.

Creator Music does not license livestream use
YouTube’s Creator Music FAQ says Creator Music does not support licensing for live content. Its licenses are described as single-use synchronization licenses subject to each track’s terms; YouTube’s Creator Music usage details say these licenses are for long-form video, not livestreams or Shorts. Do not treat a Creator Music license as permission to play that track in a continuous livestream.
Confirm who can grant the rights
A track may involve separate rights in its recording and its composition. YouTube’s music rights management guidance explains that labels commonly hold master-use rights, while composition rights may involve publishers and performing-rights organisations; collecting societies perform similar roles in some countries. Check whether the licensor controls or is authorized to grant every permission your use requires.

YouTube also says it cannot grant creators rights to someone else’s material. A track’s presence on YouTube or a general platform tool should not be treated as a grant for a different use. See its overview of license types for the distinction between platform license concepts.
Save evidence before going live
- Keep the executed license or written permission, the track title and identifier, and the identity of the licensor.
- Save correspondence confirming livestream use, YouTube and channel scope, territories, term, monetization and archive duration.
- Retain confirmation of any Content ID allowlisting for the channel.
- Match the documented rights to every track used in the continuous stream; a successful stream or the absence of an immediate claim does not prove that the license grants the intended rights.
If the license is unclear
Ask the licensor to confirm in writing that the named track may be used in a continuous YouTube livestream on your channel, in the relevant territories, with the intended monetization, and that any archived replay may remain available for the specified period. Ask separately whether the grant covers both the master and composition and whether the channel must be allowlisted.

Whether a particular license is sufficient depends on its wording, the track’s rights holders and the relevant territories. YouTube’s platform guidance explains creator responsibilities and enforcement; it does not decide how a specific contract should be interpreted or resolve local law. For a consequential rights question that remains unresolved, consult qualified counsel.
