How to Distinguish a YouTube Content ID Claim From a Copyright Removal Request in Studio

In YouTube Studio, “Claims” means a Content ID claim; “Copyright—Takedown” means a removal request. Here’s what each notice means and what to do next.

In YouTube Studio, open Content and check the video’s Restrictions column: “Claims” means a Content ID claim; “Copyright—Takedown” means a copyright removal request. The first can affect a video’s availability or monetization without itself giving your channel a copyright strike. If a removal request is valid, YouTube removes the video and applies a strike. Identify which notice you have before choosing what to do.

Where to find the notice in YouTube Studio

  1. Open YouTube Studio and select Content from the left menu.
  2. Find the video and read its entry in the Restrictions column. You may need to widen the table or open the video’s details to see the full label.
  3. Read the notice details to identify the claimant or requester, the affected material, and any stated policy or deadline.

The key distinction is the label: “Claims” identifies a Content ID claim; “Copyright—Takedown” identifies a copyright removal request. YouTube’s guidance states, “Copyright claims are different from copyright removal requests.” YouTube Help: Manage Content ID claims.

What the two notices mean

Question Content ID claim Copyright removal request
What triggered it? YouTube’s matching system identified a match to reference material supplied by a rights holder. A copyright owner submitted a legal request alleging infringement and asking YouTube to remove the video.
What might happen? The rights holder’s policy may block the video, monetize it, or track its viewership. A block or other effect may apply only in particular countries. A tracked or monetized video generally remains viewable while the claim is active. YouTube reviews the request. If it is valid, the video is removed and your channel receives a copyright strike.
Does it automatically create a strike? No. A Content ID claim by itself does not create a copyright strike. A valid removal request results in a strike when it takes effect.
What is the first response route? You can leave the claim, use available editing options, or dispute it if you have a valid basis. Review the request and any deadline. If a strike takes effect, YouTube lists specific ways to resolve it, including a retraction or counter notification where appropriate.

A claim is usually about the video, not the channel. Its impact depends on the rights holder’s policy and may vary by country. A removal request is a separate process, not simply a more serious-looking version of a routine claim. See YouTube Help: Copyright on YouTube and YouTube Help: About copyright removal requests.

What to do with a Content ID claim

First, check what was claimed

Open the claim details and note the claimant, the time segment or material identified, and the effect—such as monetization, tracking, or blocking. Decide whether you accept the claim and its consequences before changing the video or starting a dispute.

Leave it, or edit the claimed material

If you accept the claim, you can leave it in place. If the claim is valid and you want to try to clear it, Studio may offer options such as trimming the claimed segment, replacing claimed music with audio from the YouTube Audio Library, or muting claimed audio. A claim clears when the claimed material is successfully removed, as applicable to the editing option used. Available options can vary by video and claim.

Before saving an edit in Studio Editor, keep a separate copy if you might need the original. As of YouTube’s June 2025 guidance, saved Studio Editor changes cannot be undone using Revert to original. YouTube suggests downloading the video or using Google Takeout before editing. Check the current instructions at YouTube Help: Remove claimed content from videos.

Dispute only if you have a valid basis

A dispute may be appropriate if you own or have the necessary rights to the material, believe a copyright exception applies, or believe the match is an error. YouTube says crediting the owner, owning a copy of the work, or choosing not to monetize does not, on its own, justify a dispute. YouTube does not decide ownership or determine whether a particular use qualifies as fair use or fair dealing.

After an initial dispute, the claimant has 30 days to respond. If the claimant rejects it, an eligible creator may be able to appeal. For an eligible blocked claim, Studio may offer Escalate to Appeal, which skips the initial dispute stage; the claimant has seven days to respond to an appeal. An appeal can move the matter more quickly toward a formal removal request if the claimant rejects it. If that removal request is valid, a strike follows. Weigh escalation against your rights and evidence, not simply speed. See YouTube Help: Dispute a Content ID claim and YouTube Help: Appeal a Content ID claim.

YouTube says, “YouTube doesn’t mediate copyright disputes.” If you are unsure about your rights or the consequences of disputing or appealing, consider getting independent legal advice before taking a consequential step.

What to do with a copyright removal request

Check whether removal is scheduled

Open the notice and read whether it is scheduled and what deadline applies. A scheduled request can provide a seven-day window before removal and a strike. During that window, YouTube identifies steps such as deleting the video before the window closes or seeking a retraction. If the request followed a rejected Content ID appeal, canceling that appeal within the window can avoid the strike, while leaving the Content ID claim active. Follow the notice’s specific instructions; the available choices depend on the situation.

If the request takes effect

If YouTube finds the request valid and it takes effect, the video is removed and your channel receives a copyright strike. YouTube lists three resolution routes: complete Copyright School and wait 90 days, obtain a retraction from the claimant, or submit a counter notification if you believe the removal was mistaken or a copyright exception applies. A counter notification is a legal request. You cannot submit one until the removal takes effect and the strike is applied, and it should not be filed casually. Read YouTube Help: About copyright removal requests for the current process.

Quick decision checklist

  • Restrictions says “Claims”: open the Content ID claim details. Decide whether to leave it, edit the claimed material, or dispute it with a valid basis.
  • Restrictions says “Copyright—Takedown”: treat it as a removal request. Check whether removal is scheduled and note the deadline.
  • You are uncertain about your rights: do not assume that credit, owning a copy, or not earning money makes a use permissible. Seek legal advice if needed before disputing, appealing, or submitting a counter notification.
