AWS documents MediaPackage as an origin and packaging service that receives a live feed from an upstream encoder; Ant Media documents restreaming an existing Ant Media stream to YouTube. For a 24/7 channel, compare the complete workflow—source and looping, encoding, publishing, recovery, and costs—not just the product names.
What each product does in the documented workflow
AWS Elemental MediaPackage
MediaPackage sits downstream of an encoder. In AWS’s documented live flow, an upstream encoder such as MediaLive sends HLS to MediaPackage, which packages and originates the content. AWS’s reference solution uses MediaPackage to package MediaLive output as HLS, DASH, and CMAF, with CloudFront for distribution. That is a broader delivery workflow; the cited documentation does not identify MediaPackage itself as a video playout encoder or YouTube publishing encoder. Ant Media Server
Ant Media’s documentation describes configuring an RTMP endpoint to restream an existing Ant Media stream to YouTube. It notes that the feed needs audio because YouTube does not accept streams without it. This supports Ant as a publishing/restreaming component in that flow; it does not, by itself, establish a complete playlist scheduler or prerecorded-video playout system for a 24/7 channel. Ant Media social media / RTMP restreaming guide
Compare the whole channel path
Map the responsibilities before choosing: source or playlist → playout/encoder → publisher and YouTube ingest → YouTube playback. For a channel that also serves viewers on its own site, add the relevant packaging and delivery layer. A missing stage does not become covered simply because another component is present.

| Decision axis | AWS Elemental MediaPackage | Ant Media Server | What to establish for your channel |
|---|---|---|---|
| Documented role | Receives HLS from an upstream encoder and packages/originates content. | Can restream an existing Ant Media live stream to a YouTube RTMP endpoint. | Identify who generates or loops the source, encodes it, publishes to YouTube, and serves any non-YouTube audience. |
| YouTube publishing | The cited MediaPackage documentation does not establish MediaPackage as the YouTube publishing encoder. | Ant documents a YouTube RTMP endpoint and says audio is required. | Confirm output protocol, stream-key handling, audio track, and what happens after a disconnect. |
| Formats and audience delivery | AWS’s reference solution describes HLS, DASH, and CMAF packaging with CloudFront distribution. | Ant’s product page lists WebRTC, LL-HLS/DASH, CMAF, HLS, RTMP, RTSP, SRT, WHIP/WHEP, and Zixi. | Decide whether viewers watch only on YouTube or also on an owned site, and match the delivery layer to that need. Ant Media product information |
| Resilience | With redundant inputs configured, MediaPackage can switch ingest URLs when the active URL stops receiving content. | Ant describes autoscaling and deployment options, but the cited material does not establish a like-for-like end-to-end failover configuration. | Document failure handling for source, encoder, network, ingest, and any delivery service; assign alerting and recovery ownership. |
| Latency | The cited AWS material does not establish a specific YouTube ingest latency for this comparison. | Ant advertises 300 ms WebRTC latency for its real-time streaming capability; that is not a measure of YouTube playback latency. | Measure or verify end-to-end latency at the actual destination rather than comparing a protocol feature with YouTube playback. |
| Cost and operating work | Usage-priced ingest and packaging/origination; other workflow and delivery costs may apply. | License and infrastructure costs are separate; infrastructure depends on deployment. | Normalize hours, bitrates, viewers, egress, cache behavior, redundancy, encoding, support, and maintenance before comparing totals. |
How to choose for a 24/7 YouTube channel
Evaluate MediaPackage when packaging is the missing piece
MediaPackage is relevant if you are building a managed AWS workflow with an upstream encoder and need packaging/origin services, potentially alongside separate distribution. Draw the full route to YouTube and confirm which component actually publishes the feed there. Price the complete path; a MediaPackage estimate alone is not the cost of an always-on YouTube channel.
Evaluate Ant Media when you already have a stream to restream
Ant’s documented YouTube restreaming operation is the more direct fit when an existing Ant Media live stream needs to be sent to YouTube. Verify that the selected edition and deployment can provide the channel’s source/playlist playout, continuous operation, and restart behavior; the restreaming guide alone does not establish those functions.

Make continuity an explicit design requirement
A 24/7 label is not an end-to-end availability guarantee. For either workflow, identify every continuously running process and its failure response. MediaPackage’s documented input failover is specific: if it stops receiving content on the active ingest URL, it automatically switches to the other ingest URL, when redundant inputs are configured. It does not cover failures elsewhere in the chain. AWS MediaPackage live processing flow
- Who creates and loops the source content, and can that process restart without manual intervention?
- What happens if the encoder, host, or network connection fails?
- Is there a second source or encoder, and does the design avoid a shared failure point?
- Who monitors YouTube stream health and responds to alerts?
- Does recovery restore the feed automatically, or does an operator need to intervene?
Configure and test the YouTube feed
YouTube Live receives an encoder URL and stream key from Live Control Room. Its encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), and codec and bitrate settings matched to the selected resolution and frame rate. YouTube automatically transcodes the incoming live feed into multiple viewer formats; that viewer-side transcoding does not replace the source playout, encoding, or publishing stages in your workflow. - Use the current settings table for your chosen output. As one specific example, YouTube’s guidance gives H.264 at 1080p/30 fps a recommended bitrate of 5 Mbps. That is not a universal bitrate for other resolutions, frame rates, or codecs.
- Set and protect the stream key. Copy the server URL and key from Live Control Room into the publishing component, restrict access to the key, and replace it if exposed.
- Include an audio track. Ant’s restreaming guidance says YouTube does not accept streams without audio.
- Test before relying on the feed. Start a test stream, confirm picture and audio in Live Control Room, check stream health, and verify that the chosen source and restart procedure behave as intended.
Estimate the real cost, not a headline rate
The published examples below have different scopes and should not be compared as if they were equivalent monthly prices. Rates and actual usage vary by region and configuration.
| Published figure | What it covers and assumes |
|---|---|
| $1.3505/hour — AWS MediaPackage example, US East (N. Virginia), pricing page accessed in 2026. | Ingest plus packaging/origination in AWS’s 24/7 live-linear example. It assumes 9.5 Mbps aggregate input, 2× ingest pricing, a specified audience/bitrate, and a 97.5% cache/hit assumption. It excludes encoding and is not an all-in YouTube channel price. AWS Elemental MediaPackage pricing |
| $69.74/hour — AWS example of a one-hour event with 1,000 viewers, accessed in 2026. | Combines MediaLive, MediaPackage, and CloudFront using US-East-1 assumptions. It is an event example, not an estimate for this exact 24/7 YouTube use case. Live Streaming on AWS cost example |
| Ant Media license plus infrastructure | Ant says marketplace charges cover the license; cloud compute, storage, and bandwidth are charged separately by the cloud provider. The cited pricing material does not establish a comparable all-in price for a specified channel configuration. Ant Media pricing |
For a fair estimate, use the same geography and operating hours, then model average and peak bitrate, viewer count, egress, cache assumptions, encoding, redundancy, and ongoing operations. Request a current Ant quote and calculate its infrastructure separately. Do not compare Ant’s license-only charge with AWS packaging cost or an AWS estimate that includes CDN delivery.
